God of War is a good start. Spiderman, Horizon, and Uncharted 4 to follow. Oh and Bloodborne. Definitely Bloodborne.

Glad to hear life is a little less hectic for you. Welcome back.

Sunset Overdrive
Spider-Man
Mad Max
Tetris Effect
Prey
Dishonored 2
DOOM
Battle Chasers: Nightwar
Divinity: Original Sin 2
Rez Infinite.

These are imo the only genuinely excellent games this generation has offered to me, and I'm sure you'll find something satisfying out of this ensemble. They offer the best that open world gaming has to offer, phenomenal level design amongst titles like Dishonored and Prey, and tight, immensely satisfying action between DOOM and Battle Chasers.

If you're just having a PC/PS4:

Witcher 3
Persona 5
NieR: Automata
Horizon Zero Dawn
Spider-Man
God of War
Bloodborne
Uncharted 4/Uncharted Lost Legacy
Hollow Knight
Dragon Quest 11

I'm sorry for your circumstances, but I'm a little jealous you have so many great games to play through for the first time! Hope you have a blast!

Don't burn yourself out and start with Witcher 3 (no need to play previous games).

Canada
-Yakuza 0 (PS4)
-Return of the Obra Dinn (PC)
-Night in the Woods (PC / PS4)
-The Last Guardian (PS4)
-Her Story (PC)
-Bloodborne (PS4)
-The Missing: JJ Macfield and the Island of Memories (PS4 / PC)
-Nier Automata (PS4)
-The Witcher 3 (PS4 / PC)
-The Silver Case (PS4 / PC)

Those are some of my favourite games of the last five years.

Return of Obra Dinn and Her Story are two of the best and most satisfying detective style games. Yakuza 0 is an intense crime drama set in Japan with highly enjoyable brawler combat, light RPG elements and wonderfully written, hilarious side quests. The Missing is another Swery game that takes homage from Twin Peaks but also discusses a particular social issue with care and quite a bit of insight.

As others have said, there's quite a bit of good stuff on Switch too. From Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild, to Bayonetta 2 and a wealth of indie games.

Spider-Man
Persona 5
Undertale
The Witcher 3
The Wolf Among Us
Uncharted 4 (+ the first three if you haven't)
Assassin's Creed Origins
Owlboy
The Sims 4
Fortnite

I decided to go for a nice mix of things, including some games I haven't even played myself yet. I just figure they'll give you the best understanding of where gaming is at right now.

Though you should really get a Switch if/when you can pick one up

  4. Red Dead Redemption 2
  5. The Witness
  6. Overwatch
  7. Forza Horizon 3 or 4
  8. The Witcher 3
  9. DOOM
  10. Titanfall 2

Single-player, huh... hmm...

PS4
-Persona 5
-Uncharted 4: A Thief's End and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy
-Gravity Rush Remastered and Gravity Rush 2
-Monster Hunter: World (quite playable and enjoyable solo, it's what I've been doing with the series long before this one anyway)
-NieR: Automata
-Resident Evil 7: Gold Edition
-Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age
-Doom

These are some that come to mind.

Hollow Knight
Divinity Original Sin 2
DOOM
TLOU Remaster (if you haven't yet played the original)
Dragon's Dogma Remaster (if you haven't yet played the original)
God of War 2018

Since I can't actually list a tenth must play, just randomly pick from: RDR2, The Witcher 3, Uncharted 4, Nier: Automata, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Persona 5, Monster Hunter: World and Spider-Man. Those seem to get a lot of love around here.

Rayman Legends - the best contemporary Jump 'n Run on non-Nintendo systems
The Witcher 3 (and its addons) - especially the second add-on is gorgeous
Bloodborne - have not played it but heard nothing but praise
Inside - incredible atmospheric game you can play in one long sitting. have a dark room prepared and play with headphones or a decent sound system. sharing the experience is great as well
Stardew Valley - relaxing farming game
Ori and the Blind Forrest - one of the best recent Metroidvanias

There's still room for shooters. Wolfenstein, Titanfall 2 and Doom come to mind.

Persona 5-best JRPG of all time
Bloodborne-the best souls game
God of War-great story and combat
Spider-Man-best traversal in an open world
Yakuza 0-great intro to Yakuza series
Metal Gear Solid V-fantastic stealth sandbox
Horizon Zero Dawn-great story and combat
The Witcher 3-best WRPG this gen
Nier: Automata-great story and combat
Tetris Effect-you'll probably need something like this to break things up

I left off Monster Hunter, fighting games, and racing games since those tend to be more for multiplayer experiences.

In what way do you only have time for single player games? Multiplayer is often even better in shorter but more intense gaming sessions.

Bloodborne is great and has a good flow. If you dont have time for longer gaming sessions im not sure that Red Dead Redemption 2 is a good choice like some suggested. Its slow pace and much is story and buildups.

  • God of War 2018 - fantastic reboot of a stale franchise
  • Marvels Spider-Man - probably the best superhero game there is
  • Bloodborne or Dark Souls 3 - souls formula at it's finest, pick guns or shields
  • Axiom Verge - awesome metroid clone with an amazing ost
  • Celeste - best tough platformer there is, sweet story, amazing ost
  • What Remains of Edith Finch - wonderful adventure game/walking sim, one of the best stories in video games
  • Red Dead Redemption 2 - just an incredible feat in the industry, everything about it is special
  • The Last of Us Remastered - intense end of the world stuff here, good video game, great story
  • Dragon Quest XI - gorgeous game, cute, fun, simple. It's a great video game.
  • Valiant Hearts - you'll probably cry, I did.

Lots of good recommendations in here but Nioh is my game of the generation due to its incredible combat design along with the skill and itemization diversity that allows for incredible flexibility with all sorts of crazy fun builds. So yea if you enjoy solid combat and ARPGs buy Nioh.

Thanks for the great suggestions guys. This is how the list is looking right now-

For Sure-
Bloodborne
Spider-Man
God of War
The Witcher 3
Forza Horizon 4
Divinity: Original Sin 2

Maybe-
Tetris Effect (sooo this is a funky tetris game?)
Undertale
No Man's Sky (this is a guilty pleasure guys)
Nier: Automata
The Witness
Persona 5 (No idea what Persona games are, but seems highly recommended)
Horizon Zero Dawn (love the graphics, but not sure how good gameplay/story is)
Night in the Woods (have heard a lot of good things about this)
Firewatch (roaming a forest and living in a watch tower sounds cool)
Uncharted 4
Doom (love fps games, but thinking of picking Wolfenstein over this, as I have a history with that series)
Celeste (looks like an indie platformer. Can't tell what's special without spoiling myself. But great reviews)
Hollow Knight (Great art, and I'm a huge Souls fan)
Red Dead Redemption 2 (don't like clunky, cumbersome games. Heard this one had responsiveness issues)
Last of US Remastered (had the intro spoiled. Still want to play it though)
Stardew Valley (peaceful farming game? sounds awesome)

So as you see, that's way more than 10. Some help filtering please?

Spider-Man should be the first. It'll get you back into the groove and it's awesome, everything after that should come naturally.

The Witness

The best game of the last 15 years is Breath of the Wild. Gotta get a Switch though. If you must stay PC/PS4 I would suggest No Mans Sky. Absolutely amazing game. Star Citizen will be that times 10 but it's in Alpha. Monster Hunter World. Civ 6 is great on PC.

Well, all mentioned games above. Consider a PSVR with Astro Bot, RE7, Beat Saber and some others.

Kinda curious what happened though ;-)

I'd say hold off on the likes of The Witcher 3, Divinity 2, and Bloodborne until you've gotten back into the groove. Spidey would be the perfect "first" game. I'd say something like Uncharted 4 would work very well too, but Spidey is just soooo good.

Oh also, Wolfenstein 1 and 2 are brilliant, you should definitely consider those as well (but not over Doom, try having all three in your list :P ).

Definitely Hollow Knight and perhaps add Nioh as well. It's like Souls, but with its own twist. Great combat.

The Witness is sublime, and unlike anything else on your list.

DOOM's gameplay loop is awesome, it plays better that Wolfenstein.

Tetris Effect is fantastic, a must for any fan of Tetris.

Celeste is great as well and it might be a nice change of pace, genre-wise.
