Super Smash Bros. is the only one I can think of where:
- I bought the first game of a new IP when it came out.
- There have been at least 3 total games in the series.
- I've remained a fan of that franchise ever since.

Most other series I've come to after they had already been established, and/or I played them out of order.

EDIT: I guess Bioshock also fits this for me, but I'm pretty sure that's it.

  • Super Mario Kart
  • Wipeout
  • Gran Turismo
  • Project Gotham Racing
  • Burnout
  • DIRT + Colin McRae
  • Picross
  • Super Mario
  • Civilization

Off the top of my head:

Banjo-Kazooie - Bought the original a week or two after it came out.
Pokemon - Bought Pokemon Red about 3 months after it came out. Wanted it before then.
Super Smash Bros. - Bought the original about 2 weeks after it came out.
Animal Crossing - Rented and played the GameCube original around release, but didn't buy it until 2 years later.
Fire Emblem (going by US releases) - Bought FE7 on GBA a few days after it came out.
Valkyria Chronicles - I wanted the original when it came out but didn't own a PS3 at the time. When I bought one a year later, I bought VC with it.
Splatoon - Bought the original day 1.

Happy to see how they've grown and blew up

Yep. I didn't start playing games until the the late 90s, but there are a few franchises out there I was there for.

Pokemon
Mass Effect
Gears of War
Assassin's Creed
Paper Mario (does this count?)
Pikmin
Super Smash Bros. (again, does this count?)

Those are the big ones for me. There are others, but I probably either fell out with them or wasn't a big fan really.

Pokemon Red probably, I just wish I could stay as much as a fan as I was during the Gold and Silver days.

Pokemon - I got it about a year after Red/Blue released, but before Gold/Silver. Didn't have much choice, considering I was only two years old when it released. I'm counting it. This one is probably coming to an end soon.
Super Smash Bros. - Never bought the original, but I played a lot of it at a friend's house since around release and have bought every game since then.

Everything else falls into a few categories:
  1. Not what I'd call a "franchise" (only two games). Add stuff like Mirror's Edge otherwise
  2. I've missed entries and my fandom is thus limited. Uncharted and Arkham count here.
  3. I came to it late. Ratchet & Clank, Persona, Animal Crossing, and lots of other stuff falls here.

Yeah there's plenty. XCOM (UFO: Enemy Unknown), Monkey Island, Deus Ex, Mario, Witcher, Fallout (not a fan anymore), Metal Gear (might not count since it was NES version), GTA etc. etc.

Not a fan anymore, but I was into Assassin's Creed from it's beginning to about Unity.
I'm sure there's more, but I'm drawing a blank at the moment.

Most of them. I can name the ones that I wasn't an "all-in" fan of at the beginning and then became a fan later much easier, such as The Witcher, Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Castlevania, Street Fighter, Metroid, Mega Man, Zelda, Pokemon, etc.

For those in particular, my love for them started with TW3, FF4, DQ5, SotN, SF2, Super Metroid, MM2, ALttP, and XY, even though I'd played earlier games prior.

My criteria for considering myself there for the beginning is:
a) have played them since the first game came out
b) continue to follow the series till today/its demise

Wild Arms
Uncharted

Tony Hawk's, it's been a rough ride though. I had to wait for the Dreamcast version which was about 8 months after the PlayStation release. Then when I got an Xbox I was beyond excited for 2X, which ended up never getting a PAL release.

Mario, Halo and WoW are the only ones I've been a fan of from the very start and still am today.

Loads but the biggest by far is Resident Evil, it's still my favourite gaming series of all time.

And bar a few hiccups (*cough* Resident Evil 6) the series has been of an extremely high quality since the first game. With Resident Evil VII Biohazard and Resident Evil 2 Remake being extremely good games.

Several, but most notably Mass Effect. Was hyped since the reveal trailer because it was literally my dream game (commandeering a space ship and exploring the galaxy with an alien crew, solving problems along the way). I bought an Xbox 360 because of this game. And I loved all three games and Andromeda.

Oh, sure:

- Every Mega Man series other than Classic (which is almost there; I got into it, and MM as a whole, with Mega Man 3 as a kid before going back and playing 1 and 2)
- Chrono
- Super Mario Bros.
- The Legend of Zelda
- Star Fox
- Pokémon
- Katamari
- Uncharted
- Splatoon
- F-Zero
- Ace Attorney
- Silent Hill

The list goes on, but those are the big ones I can think of right now.

As far as Nintendo franchises go I could say Mario, and Pokémon are the ones I've been into from the beginning. I came into Zelda with The Adventure of Link. I played Metroid and every mainline game (except Other M) but I dunno that I'd call myself a fan.

Castlevania and Yakuza also come to mind.

I'm old, and have been an enthusiast since I was a kid. So the franchises I got in on the ground floor vastly outnumber the ones where I got in later.

In fact, trying to think of ones where I didn't start with the first game, all I came up with is Street Fighter II, Just Cause 2, and GTA3.

I started gaming with an Atari 2600, so basically every franchise.

Final Fantasy
Dragon Warrior/Quest
Phantasy Star
Metal Gear
Castlevania
Contra
Mega Man
Zelda
Mario

You name it, I was there.

I was there for Pokemon, but I was in high school and it didn't interest me, so while I was there, I've never played it.

Dragon Quest
Final Fantasy
Zelda
Metroid
Mega Man
Mana series
Mario RPG/Paper Mario series
Resident Evil

You get the picture. I've been playing every major franchise since the NES days.

I could name a few... for now I'll just say Mario. I fell in love the first time I saw Donkey Kong, when it was the hot new game in my favorite arcade. To this day the Super Mario games are among my favorites.

Only major one (not counting stuff this gen)is Dark Souls , it's the first game I bought with my own money and completed. I was 12 and I think I saw some youtubers play it and I got obsessed. I didnt really get to into gaming until kind of late as a kid, I was just playing COD for awhile and pokemon when I was younger but ever since bumbling my way through souls 1 I'll play literally anything, and I've gone through a ton of classic game series

But if you count demons souls as the start of that franchise then I guess that doesnt count

Assassin's Creed is probably the most notable one. Was hooked when I saw it at X06.
Played through and completed each one since.
