For those who may not know Game Center CX is a Japanese TV show where the host plays through classic games as a challenge to try to finish them with segments in between of visiting places like arcades, candy stores, etc. The show has spawned 3 games with 2 of them being for the ds and one for the 3ds.
The Premise of these games is you get sent back in time to the 80s/90s as a kid and hang out with the child version of the villain and you guys just play well made fake retro games together. Normally this wouldnt be any different from just playing a retro inspired game these days since they are common now, but what these games do that really makes them stand out is the love they put into the non retro gameplay stuff. The banter between the kids discussing new/upcoming releases of games or cheat codes/tricks they heard of, and most importantly the game comes with fake magazines that release a new issue as time passes in the game with new hints, walkthroughs, maps, codes, and fictional news/developer interviews that are just oozing with charm.
This is just such a cool concept and I was curious if any other games have ever attempted something similar to this because it seems like too cool of an idea to not be used again. Maybe there might even be more of a market for this type of game nowadays since retro inspired indie games have really taken off. Also worth noting that sadly only the first ds game got localized outside of Japan.
Here are a few pictures to give an idea of what I was talking about:
