First thread on Resetera, yay!

And yes, FromSoftware has set new standards for me. I can't appreciate other games as much as I appreciate theirs since I discovered and loved Dark Souls.
I remember when I discovered Dark Souls in 2010ish: I was playing basically nothing and then this game clicked for me and I re-started gaming again.

Now, their games are the only ones I truly appreciate and enjoy playing one or more times, and this is a problem. I also like other masterpieces of the generation (RDR2, GOW) but hey, when it comes to one of their titles... there is no paragon.

Am I the only one?

Can't wait to discover what's after Sekiro! (looking at you, E3 2019...)

Yes, but not from a point of check point placement which is abysmal

No, because it taps into an very oldschool videogame ruleset and anyone who plays for a long time can see this.

for me it is more of a throwback to older times than a new standard, although i would like to see more games on this level of challenge nowadays. modern games are often too easy and provide no challenge which is a shame.

this autopilot level of gameplay where the player don´t even has to think about anything because everything is laid out is gameplay without surprises and that is not a thing i am too fond of.

Not at all lmfao, I play way too many games for that.

Arkane has set those standards for me and what I want out of gaming. It's too bad no one else seems to want to meet those standards so I say fuck it and go back to doing whatever

In a way, probably, though I can still appreciate games that set out to do different things. It was actually the Dark Souls Remaster that gave me a sort of epiphany though: Yes these games may demand my attention and focus, but they respect my time and schedule. It made me swear off Service Games in favor of Product Games. Uninstalled Destiny 2, decided to never get Anthem or The Division etc etc and I've been enjoying video games on the whole a lot more since then.

I really love their games, but no.
Not sure which standards they can even claim tbh. Atmosphere maybe?

They are a nice change of pace much like when playing Pikmin in this AAA driven market, but not enough to be a standard.

Nope. FromSoftware games are just good games, nothing more. They didnt create a new genre.

No, I legit don't think they have, but when I find certain beloved AAA games shallow it's usually more a case of how we're regressing in game design, not even neccessarily complexity, just creativity, while technically improving games (Bigger maps; complex animations in combat etc.) and that whole cinematic circlejerk that makes games amazing to look at but mindlessly repetitive to play for 20+ hours.

I think compared to those Souls is a wake-up call but it's not so much that gaming was good and then "souls happened" as it feels like "gaming went in the wrong direction but then souls happened" to me.

Yes, FROM software are the only developers who can make game that are worth playing and all other devs should strive to be them. All games not made by them shoud be abolished /S

Nope.

They have their own style of games (mostly shooting off of the Demon Souls/Dark Souls template) and that's it.

More like brought back an old standard.
I'm not even into Bloodborne or Sekiro as i am more of a Dark Souls guy but i appreciate their existence.

On some things, yeah, the level design, the bosses, and the atmosphere of some of their games (especially Bloodborne) is pretty much top of the class for me. No other game has even touched the thrill and epicness of a fight like Ludwig for me yet, and I'm not sure if one ever will.

No. I've not enjoyed any of thier games I've played, and are usually an instant pass.

Something about thier dull, depressing bleak worlds is a massive turn off. The gothic design in BB did seem like a step up, but still underpinned with the tone of suffering that feels so uninviting. I can appreciate good examples of dystopia like RE and SH, but Froms art is bad imo.

Bloodborne is my favorite game ever, so they're the studio to beat in that regard.

I'm not a massive fan of Sekiro though, while it's a good game it lacks some of the magic of their previous games and it didn't really linger in my mind after I beat it. So it's not like they outdo themselves every single time.

No, I do love their art direction and the worlds they create but I don't care much for how their games play.

When a FROM game releases, it consumes my life for a short period of time but then I move on. Starting AC Odyssey after Sekiro has been refreshing.

They're solid, but extremely flawed games with a universal appeal, from a dev whose past titles were very niche.

Not even a litte.

I really like From's games, but whenever I want to play one I have to be in a "From mood" and have never thought "Man, I wish I was playing a From game now" when I'm playing something else that's not a From game.

I still haven't played Sekiro though (I held off because it seems like they still can't get a handle on performance on consoles and I don't often pay more than 20 bucks on a computer game).

Bloodborne is one of my favourite games ot all time but no I can't say they've set a new standard for gaming. They without a doubt put out some of the best games ever made but I can't say their influence is felt across the industry.

As a studio they're amazing at what they do but I wouldn't want every game to be like this, variety is the spice of life.

I would like to hear you elaborate though OP, you didn't really state why you think this is?

Not really. I prefer more flashy and faster combat of DMC and Ninja Gaiden and it doesn't scratch the itch of what I want from an RPG. Character build options are usually great though.

Nope, they make good games but none would reach my top 10. Nothing they've done has emotionally touched me.

Nah, love quite a few of their games but they only scratch one specific itch and not the myriad of other game experiences I enjoy.

No, but I will for sure miss Sekiro's combat on other games, but nothing dealbreaker like "it should be this or I won't enjoy it" shit, I do not want every game to be the same

Yes, they're games have really set a standard for me. I simply can't play most big budget games anymore after being spoiled by the pure game feel of From games. There are some exceptions, though. I really do love Arkane Studios and BotW is so great. I just really like it when games feel like games. No super long boring intro to set up stories or tutorials..

The only thing that From Software did to me, was ensuring that I'll never approach a From Software game ever again.
