I know I'm really preaching to the choir talking about this on Era, but I'm genuinely curious, for the main reason being that I was against it when I was younger and dumber shocking! After a month of being regurgitated the same story about forced diversity being a terrible thing, did it make me look past the negative and instead see it as a positive, refreshing turn for the games industry.

I'm expecting most people give sarcastic posts or just say "no", but it would be interesting to see the rare few others post their views.

I'm not sure exactly what you're talking about.

Are you talking about hiring? Depictions in games? Or something else?

Just the general views on the whole thing, including what you mentioned
Dang, that's pretty wide reaching, but alright.

I mean, it can never hurt, as with any industry, diversity is always a good thing to have, whether it'd be in the hiring process, or in the depiction of characters in games.

You obviously have something specific in mind. Why don't you explain it? Otherwise what you're saying is too abstract for us to answer.

What is "forced diversity"? It would seem, to the people opposed to diversity, that any attempts at inclusion would appear forced.

You need to focus your OP a bit. I don't understand what your point is and what you want us to discuss.

I assume we're talking about the Logging, Timber and Paper Mills Industry, OP?

What I got from OP's post is that in his youth he may have agreed with the sentiment that diversity was being forced in the media, but now he is older and has seen the effects, he now feels that increased representation is actually a good thing. And is asking if there is anyone else on Era who has gone through a similar change.

Is this correct?

This is what I got also.

"Forced diversity" is one of those things that can sound reasonable until you realize that it's just a way to excuse not hiring/depicting minorities. I can understand that to people used to not having them represented often in games etc. it seems like suddenly characters HAVE to be not white/CIS/whatever but there's no way to have more representation without that feeling.

"Forced diversity"...

You mean the base line of acknowledging people beyond cis white dudes exist and have stories worth telling? That low fucking bar for diversity?

OP I don't know what you're asking but no the industry is not diverse enough. I would love a big-time Black helmed studio, we have a LOT of stories to tell and a long history to mine from.

Not really. "The Industry" is all about making money, and being more inclusive and diverse is a good business move.

Vague and ill-defined threads are a pet peeve of mine (however if English isn't an OPs main language I can understand the difficulty)

This just feels vague to the point of redundancy

It has made me realize how white this industry is despite the fact that I grew up in a world where all of my favorite games were from Japan.

What industry OP?

I'll chime in with mine I guess. Diversity is shit and too many minorities get the "not a culture fit" BS. Not really a way to fix it where I am geographically honestly, it sucks.

Why is it "always good"?
Why should that just be accepted as a factual narrative.

Okay, no, fuck this shit.

Give me an actual example other than parents being reactionary fucks where having a group of people who are different from you in their race, background, gender, and/or sexual orientation has been a direct detriment.

I'll be waiting with bated breath.

Forced diversity is a made up concept by white dudes in a given field bitching about how they didn't get a job because they're a straight white guy or can't say/do sexist/racist shit anymore.

Think the father at dinner scene in American History X

I don't really care... I play games that I want to and I don't play games I don't want to.

Diversity is not a factor iny gaming purchases.

OP clearly meant games industry as he mentions it.

No, I always thought it was a good thing OP, but glad you're seeing it now, too. Now take a look at who propagated that idea, if you follow/are friends with any of them and see what their motives really are.

That's why I love the FGC it's the most diverse gaming community, also I think having the people from different backgrounds is soo cool, ever since I was young I always wanted a diverse group of friends which I have now.

Diversity itself is a wonderful thing of course, although sometimes giving it up can make contextual sense or have narrative significance.

As for the discourse around it, well, I feel somewhat disillusioned by the industry now.
