On March 3, 2017, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild launched right alongside the Nintendo Switch. The game launched to a storm of rave critical acclaim and great reviews that hadn't been seen to this degree in years, and single handedly propelled the Switch to a fantastic launch. And with good reason—Breath of the Wild is one of the best games ever made (if you ask me, it is the best game ever made). Nintendo's first take on the open world genre is staggering in its scope and its sheer inventiveness. It deconstructs open world tropes and dismantles long-standing assumptions about its own series thoroughly to create a game that's felt like nothing else at launch.

It's been two years, and there has still been nothing else quite like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Two years later, I still return to it, and even with 170 hours logged into the game, I am still playing it (I was playing it just now!), and finding brand new things about it that I hadn't stumbled upon before. It's a masterpiece of exploration and discovery, and the game I had waited on for all these years, and I can't wait to see where Nintendo goes with the sequel. And that's the most exciting thing for me—even with how much I love Breath of the Wild, there are so many obvious areas of improvement, I can't wait to see Nintendo build on it.

So happy two birthday to Breath of the Wild. Feel free to share your own stories, opinions, videos, GIFs, and more on the game here.

And I still haven't finished it, despite the 280 or so hours...
Maybe I should finally end this journey as a way to celebrate its birthday.

I still remember putting 33 hours into it on launch weekend.

One of my favorite gaming memories, just exploring Hyrule and having a good time.

Exploring that world for the first time was such an experience. Brought back some child wonder feelings I haven't felt in a long time. Certainly one of the most impactful entries of the series alongside OoT.

Game of the Generation for me... not flawless of course, but it's still quite possibly the best game I've ever played. Whenever I stumble upon a new thread about it or video on YouTube, the urge to go back in is usually too great, and I'll run around the world for a little while. Do a sidequest, find some seeds, hunt a little bit, just take things in. I can't wait to see what they do next. The attention to detail and its way of conveying sense of time and place is still staggering to me.

I've said happy birthday to Breath of the Wild 5 times today and it still hasn't said 'thank you' smh how rude 😤

I really wanna replay this game though. I loved it and it'll be interesting to see if I feel any differently now.

Just started playing this last night and put in 5 hours straight. It's amazing. Shame on me for waiting so long to play it!

Maybe the first time Zelda's design came together to produce a cohesive and expertly crafted experience through and through. BOTW is one piece of work

Best game ever IMO, I feel nostalgic about BotW and it's only 2 years old.

I'm sure than in 10 years I'll remember BotW as a really special game, the same way I feel now about AlttP, OoT, MM or TWW.

This game was a remarkable achievement in game design. Even the more controversial changes such as the shrines, weapon degradation, Divine Beasts have best in industry implementations. Never played a game where the first 100 hours flew past quite like it did for me with this game.

i never got around to play the DLC and my brother took my copy so tomorrow i'm going to buy it for my second playthrough with the DLC and i'm really hyped about it. Such an amazing game.

I find funny the people expecting the "honeymoon phase" to end when it has only grown on me overtime...

What Nintendo did with that game is still unmatched today and i really can't wait to see what they do with the next game (if king zell hint was about it i can't wait for next year asgsdsg)

I clocked 120 hours during my first play through two years ago, that was definitely my time best spent as a video gamer. I've let it rest since then, but I'm wondering when I should dust it off. I want to give it enough time so as to be pleasantly surprised by things I've forgotten.

Love Breath of the Wild, though curiously I think for me while I sunk more hours into it than any other Zelda game it'll also be the Zelda game I replay the least. Now I know how to solve all the riddles I'll know how to tackle situations, which is a shame because the sense of discovery first time around was jaw dropping.

Hope to play again in a few years when I've forgotten the specifics of how to approach its puzzles.

The reason I bought a Switch. BOTW is one of the only open world games that made me want to actually explore. Unfortunately, nothing else on the Switch has really come close to this spectacular experience.

Still very amazing. I should finish the Wii U version, which I started then moved to Switch.

Very amazing game, I can only imagine what Nintendo will pulloff with the next installment (not counting LA of course). The game has it's flaws, but so easy to forgive and forget when I lose myself in it's scope and design completely.

Game of the Year every year and the best thing is that the game has so much potential to expand and build upon in a sequel to truly become the GOAT

Well there's hardly anything else in general that comes close :P

When you get to Rito Village and hear that Dragon Roost Island remix

When you purify Vah Ruta and the Zora region has clear skies

When you finally get the Master Sword

When you stumble upon Eventide Island

👌👌👌

i have played a few amazing games in the meantime and tbh, not just on switch, there is no other game in any platform close to replicate what BotW made me feel, RDR2 was the closest and it only lasted for 15-20h before going downhill.

Looking back, I was too hard on it I think. Great world, fun loot, and lots of great little puzzles. 70 hours of fun but I'm starting to feel like I could go for more.

Will give the next mainline Zelda a more in depth look.

Great game, one of the best of all time
It's March 3rd somewhere

Yeah, I love the Switch, but it's more quantity than quality there, nothing came close to BOTW itself

Naw, you dont want me to, they are too humble

It's the best mediocre-ish game I played last year. After all the hype I was left disappointed by the ultra weak narrative and repetitive shrines. It's great to explore the world for a good while, but then you realize that there's precious little of interest to discover. The enemies are lame reskins spread out with way too little variety for a game of this size. The one stand-out moment for me in the game was heading north across Mount Lanayru with only a few resources to keep warm in the early game, then discovering the dragon. That was awesome! But there's not a lot of moments like that to reward exploration. The four "dungeons" were middling in design, too short and too easy. I also hated the lame breaking weapons which doesn't help the game from my perspective. To me it's the most severely overrated game in a long time. Hopefully the next Zelda is more interesting and has a story worth engaging with.

While the exploration is really great, my favourite thing of BotW where the towns.

They are amazingly realised, carefully sculpted to represent the life of the race that inhabits them to an extend no other game has. It is amazing to get clues of how those races lives their life by just watching how they are built, from the sleeping pools of the Zora domain to the put together and shared houses of the gorons, passing by the vertical design of the Rito and ending on the bar of the gerudo. They are also inhabited by such a variety of people within their races is mindblowing. I have never felt fantasy races as realised as the ones we see in BotW, the variety in bodyshapes, colours, heights, ages... its truly stunning and gives them an incredible sense of life.

A lot of people complained when the Easy Allies put 3 BotW towns in their top 10 towns, but tbh it is hard to disagree on how well realised are they, each of them is far superior to most games that only focus on one, to the extend maybe 3 is a bit too low.

Anyway, i hope we see new races in the next Legend of Zelda (since i hope it is set in another place not named hyrule) and we get towns as amazing as the ones BotW delivered.

ugh the towns were so good

I love how well the world felt in terms of being a post apocalyptic type world but one that was 100 years later where everyone sort of fell into a rhythm of how to go about their lives despite ganon chilling in hyrule castle and all the monsters across the world.

Wish I could make the "remembering a memory" track as my ringtone. Love that jingle that played every time links has a flashback.
