It is quite easily the best Halo campaign and one of the best FPS campaigns of all time.

Yes? Halo 5's campaign is awful and 343 just can't match Bungie on Gunplay. Hell, Gunplay is what makes Destiny so great.

I do really love the gunplay in Destiny so I'm going to want to play Reach? It's on Game Pass anyway so it won't cost me anything to try it or should I play another Halo game first? I haven't played any since the second one came out.

Considering Reach is a prequel to 1, you can definitely dive right in!

A very good campaign! Reach maintains a very even quality from start to finish. However, it doesn't quite achieve the same heights that Halo 3 reached (no pun intended).

It's absolutely fantastic. Bungie is great at what they do and Reach was absolutely a peak in their history.

4 has a better story and comparable gameplay.

5 absolutely blows Reach out of the water when it comes to gameplay. The core combat, movement and level design are on another level (pun intended) compared to Reach.

Nah, the gameplay in 4 isn't as good, the enemies and new weapons are poor and the level design is restrictive.

5 has good mechanics, but the encounter design is poor, the Warden Eternal a repetitive mess, the story is awful and the levels are incredibly hit-and-miss. Some levels are nothing more than walking up to a point of interest on a map and pressing a button. Disappointing game.

Yeah I replayed it earlier this year for the first time since it came out, and it's held up really well. It still looks good, plays good, and the story is solid. Definitely made me think of Rogue One as well.

I don't care much about Reach's story personally, but its mission design is absolutely stellar. I just replayed through the entire MCC on PC this month, and Reach honestly surprised me. I didn't really mesh with Reach all too well when I was younger, but this time around it really just sunk in how consistently great the encounter design is throughout. I think the way they incorporated a lot of MP maps into the campaign itself is really neat as well.

My favorite is still ODST though.

I just recently played through it when it came out on Steam, and it was sentiments like the thread title's that made me have high expectations. When I finished it, my reaction was "That's it?". I find it funny that other games that came out around the same time had such good campaigns yet somehow Reach is pointed to as this great campaign? Yeah, I don't get it.

Yeah, it's the best campaign. Bungie at their absolute peak. Reach is one of my all time favourites. Been so good getting to play it again since I got my S.

Halo 5's gunplay is arguably better than Destiny's. Let alone it's a technical fact that Halo 3 has the worst and most inconsistent gunplay in the series.

I played the first few missions of the campaign when I had PC game pass. I hadn't played this before and I was bored out of my mind and quickly deleted the game. It was almost as bad as ODST.

I won't disagree that bloom was a bad decision, but overall it's still more fun to shoot. Sorry, I just don't think 343 has good gunplay and their writing is simply terrible.

Maybe now that Microsoft has id, they can have them help out to get some good gunplay back to the series.
Keep doom gunplay away from halo please.

Also I like wolfenstein more than most and even that I dont think would be a good fit for halo gunplaywise, let wolf 3 be its own thing.

MS can do whatever they want with rage (doubt they care), quake will follow its current trajectory I think (I think they care about this one).

i replayed it after many years and i agree I think its the best

The only flaw is the mandatory spaceship sections, they are so bad and cut the pace

I remember being personally disappointed with the Halo 3 campaign (I'm not sure if that's a common sentiment)... but I ended up really, really enjoying Reach - I do think it's my favourite Halo campaign.

I've been working my way through the MCC on PC an Reach is by far and away the best... it's just so much fun, space section aside. Halo3 is dragging as did 2. Looking forward to 4 and really hope they relent and add 5 to the PC MCC.

It's the best campaign, for me, even if 3 is the best overall package.

Definitely has its issues especially when it comes to how it went against established lore, but it really was the last Halo game that did anything interesting with its level design. New Alexandria is top notch and should have been a template for level design prior to Infinite. A really solid spin off campaign despite its flaws and still managed to keep the heart Bungie Halo games had.

Gunplay? Seriously?

You're comparing Reach, the game that introduced bloom, to the likes of Halo 5?

I am not the biggest fan of Reach. Although I do love the story. I would say generally speaking Bungie delivered a better SP experience overall. Also, I think that when people refer to gunplay they are talking about the feel/animation of shooting in Destiny or Doom rather than hit detection. It's visual and rumble feedback. From an animation perspective Destiny feels a lot more rewarding than modern Halo (4/5).

Best Halo campaign definitely. Anyone else get all teary eyed at the end?

Yeah I definitely agree with this. I wish so bad Bungie was making Halo Infinite. Destiny just feels so good to me

Reach was a disappointment for me from a gameplay and story perspective. It's not terrible either though. Then again I don't think any Halo has a terrible campaign.

I played 5 co-op with my wife and we had a blast playing through it but from a story perspective for us who don't get all deep into the lore we had no real idea what was going on ever. Compared to like a Wolfenstein game id say for us that was a pretty bad campaign

If it weren't for the problems with heavy aim and ADS, Halo 5 would have had some pretty great gunplay. The weapon sandbox is pretty well fleshed out and doesn't have many useless guns considering the variety that's there. It's a huge step above Halo 4's gunplay at least, which has some incredibly boring new weapons for the Prometheans that were very improved between titles.

Halo 3's story and some of it's levels were downgrades from Halo 2 (Floodgates and Cortana were both short and annoying levels).

I thought 5 was fine for a modern game. You cannot really have an FPS game without ADS. We lost that battle a long time ago.

Reach was amazing! So is every Halo game Bungie have made. That's why I loved there series and became my favorite. Its so far and beyond of what 343 have made, which is pure mediocre as games. And that's why it's not my favorite game anymore .

Strange, I thought the combat encounters were super boring for some reason when I played it for the first time last year. Halo 3 I think remains the best, but I haven't replayed Halo 2 in a long time either.

Maybe I need to play it again, because I thought Reach was mostly forgettable.

Though I only played through it once, and by myself. Every Halo before it I also did split screen with a friend.

This is correct. Halo 4 campaign is so underrated, and at its time was one of the prettiest games made for console. And Reach re-surprises me every time with how good it is.
I have been noticing that at r/Halo and in Halo Waypoint, and in YouTube comments everybody now is like "Bro Halo 4's campaign is so underrated", "Controversial comment but Halo 4 is my favorite campaign [gets tons of likes]", "Man we shouldn't have criticized Halo 4 so much in 2012, I'm playing it again on PC and the campaign is amazing".

Halo 4's campaign is kinda building a cult following after being criticized at first and I couldn't be happier!

Halo 4's Prometheans were also pretty fun to fight. Particularly in comparison to 5.

Idk it feels kinda boring, been there done that.

Halo for me always peaks in the first levels but generally has a fairly weak back half. My faves are 2 and 3 with 2 having an absolutely great first like 5 missions and pretty hugely dropping off with the last half lol. Halo 3 has some amazing first 4-5 missions too and overall keeps it's quality but also has some major drops *cough*Cortana

So overall I'd say Halo 3 has the best campaign. It's got the best set pieces in the scarab fights and generally some really fun and varied encounters, mixing up on foot fights with vehicular sections.

Halo 2 has the best sequence of missions though out of the series, going from giving the covenant back their bomb to New Mombasa to the first Arbiter mission to Delta Halo.

It's the only Halo I hate. I was super excited for it too. It was Bungies swan song and it was going to be the Fall of Reach, which is amazing!

But then it ended up not being The Fall of Reach at all. The characters were largely forgettable. They had a template of an already amazing story, and had the chance to fully make it canon, and they went another direction. It was such a disappointment. And then the multiplayer wasn't even great either with shit like armor lock, and all the maps just being straight walled off copy and pasted single player levels.

exactly my sentiment. Once I learned it wasn't actually the Fall of Reach my hype went to 0 and I hated the multiplayer abilities+maps too.

It is amusing reading these arguments, especially as the MCC and Halo 5 are all part of GamePass. It is a simple matter for most to boot into any of these campaigns to refresh their memory. Which many of you need to do as not enough have proclaimed ODST king of the Halo campaigns.

The story is forgettable. You are just doing random missions u til the last 3 missions of the game. The characters are good I guess. The levels are much better than I remember, except long night of solace on legendary you just have to cheese it in order to win there is no way not to.

I'd say I like it more than Halo Ce now, but not as much as 3 or 2.
Its is definitely better than odst, 4 and 5.

Having played the rest of the series recently, I definitely think Reach is the most consistently great. The other campaigns have individual missions that are incredible, but Reach is great throughout, without a real bad mission anywhere. The gimmick missions, like the one in space is also very fun.

Having played Reach on LASO, I think it is by far my favorite to play on legendary, as well. It's genuinely challenging, but there are so many different routes you can take in missions like The Package and Pillar of Autumn.

Also, sorry to anyone who's a fan of it, but I think 5's campaign is straight-up trash

There are certainly issues with it, but overall, I liked the campaign a good bit.
As far as multiplayer goes, Reach had cool ideas, even if the execution wasn't terribly hot all of the time. Invasion was fun.

I think I could get along with calling it the "best" Halo campaign, and I loved it too. My favorite Halo campaign is still probably ODST, though.

That might have a lot to do with the night-time soundtrack, lol.

I like it, it felt like it hit all the classic beats but with a larger scope. 1,2 and Reach are probably my favourites for their campaigns.

Granted I fell off after 4 and was never into multiplayer so I wouldn't want to get into the weeds with ranking entries outright, the technical aspects of how they compare as shooters aren't that important to me now since I haven't played Halo in ages and never played it with a competitive spirit.

Only one I want to play that I haven't is ODST, I have no idea what that game is and completely missed out.

Reach on 360 was my favourite Halo because of the cross campaign/firefight/multiplayer progression with xp and badges and whatnot. The campaign was solid and the dailies/weeklies kept me coming back well after I'd normally drop it.

Yeah it is, I'm still suspicious that Star Wars: Rogue one was inspired by it.

They all follow the story structure of the Seven Samurai, which is a classic team/multi character format. That's mostly where the similarities begin and end, aside from the sci-fi genre trappings SW and Halo share.
