Good for a publication to publish the game of the year, when the year is actually close to be over. However, they're wrong. That's fine though, not everyone can be right all the time.
Whatever game you choose will be wrong as well because it's all about opinions. This game has a Metacritic of 93 so obviously a lot of reviewers liked it.

I found the game to be alright and nothing more. Great art and ok gameplay. But I'm not a huge fan of rogue-like(lite) games, in fact I hate them. So me not hating Hades is the best praise I can give it.

I've played a lot better games this year.

Hell yes. Hades is the game that will be remembered from this year and will have a major influence on game design going forward. It's writing, story, characters and combat are all basically perfect. It deserves every win.

What does this game make it different from other hack n slash games?.

Ignoring narrative for a moment, it's the combat. I think Hades might be the best playing action game since Ninja Gaiden Black, maybe ever. It is absolutely perfect. Movement, weapon variety, enemy types, bosses, iframes, dash ranges. It's just perfectly tuned. The sense of mastery and player skill growth you get in Hades is nearly unrivaled in gaming IMHO. And it's integrated into a roguelike structure in such a way that the the player's actual skill progression ties into the story progress. It's just one of the best games ever made.

And it never wastes your time even as a roguelike. It's made other games I've played frustrating since. I've over and over again this year gone why don't you just do what Hades did to solve this and stop wasting my time game!

I've stopped playing roguelixes completely after playing many of the most acclaimed ones and not loving any of them but I definitely plan to make an exception for this one when it hits Xbox and drops below $10. People seem to be going nuts over it.

Any idea when will be released on PlayStation or Xbox ?

No and they explained it in the NoClip documentary. COVID, their studio burglary and manpower are the reasons they can't port it to many consoles at once and they thought switch would be the best option for now. They know people want it on other consoles just give them some time.

Well deserved for my GOTY. We need more indies winning goty, many publications assume people will be mad if an Indie is selected as the best game of the year...

god I can't wait for Returnal. A big budget roguelike from Housemarque....that's like a dream.

Fully agreed, I know some people are grumbling about the price but I am 100% in for Returnal.

On topic...fully respect Hades winning so many of these! Supergiant have put out some great games and deserve the recognition. I have only put a few hours in myself but it is absolutely solid. Not my GOTY but certainly in the top 5 for me.

User warned: Thread whining
Nice job for Hades. Should we also create a thread every time TLOU2 wins GOTY?

I'm enjoying Hades but don't quite see what's so great about to be landing this many GOTY awards
It's not necessarily my GOTY, but I can't really fault it for anything, it does what it sets out to do really really well. It's just a very fun game with a reasonably good story, great voice acting, and great music, without an ounce of bloat attached to it.

If I thought Bastion was super boring and I absolutely loved Transistor, would I like Hades?

Probably. I thought Bastion was very boring. Transistor was solid with more engaging gameplay though the story is just random bullshit by the middle to end. Hades is more complete than the other 2 imo.

Nicely done Supergiant. Of the 4 Gamer Network sites I read regularly the only one that didn't give it GotY was NintendoLife (it went to AC:NH instead). That's a hell of a hat trick.

I agree with two of those three. I feel it fails in structure as the levels are procedurally generated, and feel rather *blah*. I know it would be way more work for them, but I wish it had actual designed levels/dungeons.

None of the levels are procedurally generated. They are all handmade, drawn, and designed. The player just sees them in a (mostly) random order in any given run.

Really well done game, I can appreciate the craft in it, but it wasn't quite my thing. The whole presentation just wasn't to my taste, and while the combat was fun, I felt it got a little messy / button mashy by the end of runs. Enjoyed it but not a GOTY pick personally. Either way, happy to see something by a smaller studio raking in the awards, by all accounts Supergiant seems like a good hardworking group of people and they've paid their dues over the years in terms of consistency.

I didn't like the randomness of it and fell off the game because of that. I loved it in all other respects though. I expected I would quit because of difficulty but in the time I spent with the game it never felt unfair. I do want to give it another go.

Hades was fantastic and I loved every second I played.

But TLOU 2 is still superior as a whole for me.. that game is the complete package from incredible gameplay/story to technical stuff we haven't even seen in PS5 yet.
