USPS doesn't operate on government funding.

Very bad.
The federal government employs something like three million people. Large swaths of those operations are now unfunded and will halt.
Employees will not get paid until funding is appropriated. Essential personnel still have to work.

It effects contractors more then anything. Civilian federal employees all end up getting paid whether they work or not. Been that way for the past dozen or so shutdowns. Sucks for those living paycheck to paycheck for sure but they'll get their money.

Sorry for the dumb question, but can anyone ELI5 what exactly a government shutdown is?

Like, Trump didn't get his phones so he's saying "okay, no government"? What does that entail exactly? Town halls are closed?

Sorry, I'm an idiot when it comes to this stuff but trying to be more informed.

You couldn't ask for a more fitting end to the 115th Congress than for it to shut down the government right before Christmas out of sheer obstinance and incompetence.

Federal employees will not be paid, though essential services such as the military, postal service, and most law enforcement including corrections officers, FBI/DEA/ATF, and Border Patrol. Important to note that the DoD's budget was already approved so for the most part, those members of the Federal government are still getting paid.

Other departments like Agriculture for instance will only keep on employees whom the Department heads deem "essential," though they'll have to work without pay.

Now the next payday is going to be January 2nd. So as of midnight tonight no one will actually be working without pay. After the 2nd we'll officially be in the part of the shutdown that effects all employees, not just those who are furloughed. Estimates put the number of federal employees who will likely be working without pay at around 420,000 of the roughly 800,000 that currently exist.

Ryan was supposed to be the numbers guy. Then he blew up the deficit. I don't know how one man can carry so much humiliation.

Well, if you don't give a fuck what anyone says and have no sense of shame and your goal is to make life miserable for poor people the 99%... carrying shame isn't an issue in this case, it turns out!

It means that federal government employees no longer are paid. Most will not show up to work until the government reopens. State and local level government employees are still fine. These used to be uncommon/rare but in the past few years they have become frequent. Hurting the US Credit rating. We were downgraded from AAA to AA a few years ago. It hurts our economy as well as effecting employees who no longer are paid. The past few shutdowns a number of employees who's position was deemed critical worked for free.

"What do we want?"

"A wall... slat fence... or great barrier whatever!!!!"

"who's gonna pay for it?"

"We will eventually if it gets jammed through before the dems take the house!"

Would have made rally's so much funner.

As far as 'the blame game' goes, you've also got to look at who is asking for something. The time dems got blamed was because they were the ones trying to get something.

While most Americans support something like the dream act, most Americans didn't support the shutting down the government to get it.

This time, most Americans are against the wall, but crucially, even more Americans are against shutting down the government to get the wall to the tune of something like 60%. 'It's their fault because they won't give me what I want', is much harder to sell than 'It's their fault because they won't pass a clean spending bill.'

Maybe Trump is attempting to shutdown the government as many times as he's gone bankrupt before leaving office.

Do they think they have leverage here? They still control the government, they have all the blame.

Doesn't matter who's responsible for this shutdown, it's ultimately always avoidable. I'm not saying anyone had to cave into demands of another parties requests, but neither side is willing to compromise or work together. Politics in the US is no longer about what's right, it's about making sure the opposing party doesn't get what they want.

It's absolutely ridiculous that it's come to this and both parties are to blame for it.

The Senate passed something to keep the government open. It was a bipartisan vote.

The Republican controlled House of Representatives paid it no mind.

Do not both sides this.
