My SO went out for a couple things (actually found wipes at Costco!) and said there was barely anyone around, even inside the essential stores. Lots of measurements in place to keep spacing/touching things, too. I checked Google Maps during rush hour and all was green. Most people are definitely abiding by it.
I went to the target by Milpitas and there were quite a few people there but no one was practicing social distancing lining up closely and what not.

The prospect of half of Californians being infected got me worried. Barely go outside anymore other than getting food.

What about the large, retail stores that sell groceries? Like Walmart or Target? I work at a Walmart and was smart enough to do an early LOA starting Monday, but forgot that I need to pick up my W2 from personnel.

Foreal I haven't heard anyone ask that yet either. All of us are about to be on the streets if that doesn't get suspended or we don't get checks. My friend just got fired from her job so shit is going down.

I was listening to the press conference Q&A afterwards with newsom, and not one fucking reporter asked such a basic question on the minds of millions of people: What's going to happen to their bills that need to be paid? (unless i missed it)

All those are considered essential stores and will remain open. Basically any stores that sells groceries will be allowed to remain open.

That's considered an essential business and doesn't fall under the lockdown.

Like I said in another post they call suspend all these bills but in the end once all this is over with the creditors want their money.

I'd say that should be more on the store to try to enforce it themselves. I saw a video of a Costco somewhere, that used shopping carts and pallets to seperate coming/going lines. I mean, if the stores themselves want to be safe, it would be good to have it enforced.

I agree, but you'd think people would be wary of it.

He stressed that 56% would be the number if no measures were taken. And California has been taking them for a couple weeks now. It's still scary, but it's a great justification for such extreme measures.

Is it cool to still go on walks...?

Yes. Just keep 6ft distance from others.

You can't really force creditors to not collect on debt.

The state has already moved to halt evictions and foreclosures, and they've loosened as many unemployment restrictions as they can (if you're suddenly out of work, you should immediately be filing for unemployment). Anything else will need to happen at the federal level.

Gamestop's California stores are gonna have a real challenge calling themselves "essential goods" now. I'm so glad I cancelled my pre-orders and put all my credit onto PSN cards earlier this week.

56% is scary as fuck. I left Walmart to protect my 88-year-old mother. Now, a trip to the store puts me at risk. Luckily three members of our family our nurses or former nurses so we put practices in place. Those touch screens and styluses at the stores are a bit of a worry, so I bring gloves and napkins if I have to touch anything. I'm the primary caregiver of my mother and I'm making my sister, brother and sister-in-law try and keep a good distance from each other, but it's hard in a small house.

This is fine if it's like the Bay Area. Just keep your distance from others and don't play on the playground. It's okay to go outside, get some fresh air and get exercise.

I don't think this is allowed. Visiting isn't the same as caring for. Since she's in a nursing home they probably view that as the point of care where as you visiting isn't a requirement for her care.

Edit: This is the FAQ from Santa Clara County which says no:

Great. I'm expecting tomorrow I will probably be banned.
You're fine to visit her at your discretion. Nobody is going to arrest you over it as we aren't under Martial Law.

Hope not, this situation is drastically changing every day. Heard about the serious restrictions in Italy and considering the Governor is worried half the state could be infected in 2 months is making me really paranoid.
They shouldn't allow visiting at all, and you should not be physically going to see your mother.

You won't get in trouble for it (this is about communal activity and crowding, not a person who's checking up on the folks), but it's dangerously irresponsible to interact with anybody in a nursing home right now.
It's a horrible feeling not being able to check on my dad (they refuse to allow visitors at his nursing home). The staff at my mom's facility said it was ok as long as we stay outside.

Otherwise my mom is screaming her lungs out over the phone for me to get her out of there which is practically impossible right now.

My job cannot be done at home but I am really lucky continue working because my company provides supply to essential businesses. We sell sign materials to various sign shops and government agencies across the Bay Area. There's been a need to create new signage for city and county closures as well as hospitals needing new signs for anything regarding the virus.

My wife on the other hand is a preschool teacher and is out of work for an undetermined amount of time. Seeing her stuck at home with our one year old without any clear idea as to when she will be able to go back to work is truly sobering. Knowing there are potentially millions of people stuck having the same feeling of uncertainty as my wife really makes this situation feel so dire. I do my best to come home positive everyday, cook dinner and keep the best level of stability I can for us.

This is truly going to be a tough time for all of us. I hope you all are able to come out ok on the other side.

The government needs to do something about all the people and businesses that are at risk right now.

How has a moratorium on rent and other bills not already been established?

Your dad's facility is handling this better.

It is horrible. But it is better than the alternative. Let your mom scream, and tell her you love her and will see her as soon as it's safe.

Gonna have to see if this will affect my job. Work in an electronic contract manufacturing company.

I wish there was some guidance given the vast diversity of jobs that could easily be considered essential beyond the obvious like grocery workers and nurses.

We work on DX rated military programs, which are given "the highest national priority." It would seem self evident that we can't shut down given the implications to the military supply chain, but there is zero guidance on this from the state.

I don't think that's an easy thing to do. There's a moratorium on evictions but even then when that moratorium is up I assume you owe the back rent.

Yo yesterday in Seattle the gorgeous weather had people playing basketball and soccer at the park with their kids and riding bikes. Crowded as hell. People don't understand simple instructions, so we probably need shelter in place to protect WA too

Susanville, CA.

It's about as isolated from the rest of California as you can get (80 miles from Reno) on the eastern side of the Sierra's.

It's conservative as fuck.

I work for US Cellular and this is what I've heard

It's the flu, the Chinese invented it to get back at us for killing NAFTA, Corona is another word for flu, etc.

These people are ignorant and stupid and once this thing blows up here (which it will), it's going to be ugly. The hospital here can't handle a major outbreak.
I was born and raised in Alturas so I can second that the people are stubborn and backwards at times. I hope they make the right choices for the safety of my family but like you say, lots of tinfoil hats there.

Not true. It's possible they decide that keeping the lockdown might be worse in the long run and are forced to open things up.
Worse in what way? Forced by what circumstances? I'm trying to understand what you're saying . I am trying to not jump to the awful conclusion you're worrying about economic consequences in the face of a pandemic that could wipe millions of Americans off this planet within the next year.

They do provide some guidance here:
covid19.ca.gov

Current safety measures

Steps you can take to protect yourself from COVID-19 and prevent its spread.

Essential services will remain open such as:

  • Gas stations
  • Pharmacies
  • Food: Grocery stores, farmers markets, food banks, convenience stores, take-out and delivery restaurants
  • Banks
  • Laundromats/laundry services

Essential state and local government functions will also remain open, including law enforcement and offices that provide government programs and services.

What's closed?

  • Dine-in restaurants
  • Bars and nightclubs
  • Entertainment venues
  • Gyms and fitness studios
  • Public events and gatherings
  • Convention Centers

Honestly, if you're not a retail establishment I don't really think the police are going to start raiding office buildings (unless there's a snitch), but that's for the company to decide I guess.

They won't.

I had an older gentleman come in today who just got out of a month long stay in the hospital. His reason, he couldn't find his clock app on his phone and wanted it on his home screen.

I hear you. Haven't got my response from my supervisor whether or not we're working tomorrow. So probably assuming we will indeed work.

lmao we're looking at millions dead because of a virus but the economy, guys, the economy.

Get people food, shelter, healthcare, and security. Nothing else matters right now. Get that UBI flowing, freeze rent, whatever. Do it.

Our household has been in unofficial quarantine for the last ~5 days and now I guess it's legit.

With the complete void of competent leadership at the federal level, it's up to the states to save themselves. So this is great news, and I'd welcome them going further and actually enforcing it. People are right to be concerned about the economic impact — which will be unprecedented — but if our healthcare systems collapse, and other governmental systems follow, our prognosis as an economy and society will be even worse. We need to be doing everything we can to try and blunt the impact now. This is the right call.

Thanks for this, but I was thinking more that I wish there were some kind of guidance for things like businesses that have obligations to the operation of the federal government. Newsom only really talked about state and local government.

You're right though that it's not like we're going to get raided or anything. I just know that it's going to be insanely hard to get definitive answers due to the volume of people who will be trying to get them.

No price on the ticket, but I imagine the person who took the picture wanted to hide their name.

This still isn't a ticket for standing too close to someone on the sidewalk. This is a parking ticket at the UC Berkeley Botanical Gardens, which are closed due to the virus and the shutdown order. I think it's hard to justify going there as "essential".

since people are losing their jobs and many won't be able to pay rent i can at least hope this freezes any rent hikes that would have taken place this year. maybe that is something they can add to any virus help bill.

The economic consequences affects everyone. At some point the economic consequences are going to be hurting way more people and cause suffering and desperation that the number of people going through this is going to outweigh the number of people that would be by this virus. You can't keep things lock down forever and at some point they may have to decide to open things up otherwise so many other things crumble along with the people impacted by the ramifications there. I hate to make this analogy because of all the shitty flu analogies that have taken place, but we don't shut down society because of the flu. We know people will die from the flu, but the number of people who do die from the flu isn't great enough to cripple society to keep those people safe from it. Make no mistake, I'm not saying this virus is like the flu; it's by far significantly worse, but the point stands that at some point the vast majority of the people will have to be considered and that's an unfortunate truth that we already deal with even before this. I would not want to be the person who has to make that decision because someone is going to suffer because of it.

It's not so bad, guys. It's just like being on vacation, except you can't go anywhere, and you still have to work.
