So, in recent days, Donald Trump and his surrounding brain trust have made public their intent to "purge" the federal government of anyone not "loyal". The mechanism to do so would be to change their employment status to "at will", something Trump tried to do with an executive order called "Schedule F" just before the 2020 election (rescinded by Biden once he took office).

That change would allow about 50,000 federal employees, in addition to the ~4,000 that already change when a new administration takes over, to be fired without cause.

In other words, Trump is not satisfied with 4,000 yes-men. He wants every federal employee to be a yes-man.

Details here:
Trump's 2025 plan includes a nightmare list of Cabinet picks — and purge of career officials: report

Last Friday, Representative Chip Roy, of Texas, introduced a bill called the "Public Service Reform Act", which would accomplish the same thing: to make thousands of federal employees "at will".
GOP bill would strip federal workers of job protections amid Trump plot to "purge" career officials

Of course, this has no chance of passing while Democrats are in control. But the point is: it's not just Trump. This may happen the next time the GOP has the power to do so, whether Trump is president or an inmate.

Texas, why do you suck so much politically? All sorts of garbage coming from the state politically of late.

Ah yes let's purge civil service positions that are already notoriously difficult to fill.

Sad. Amlo (mexican Trump) is already doing this. Little by little dismantling all government institutions and civil service by replacing them with ignorant yes men.

How poorly is the bill written? Could the Democrats elect to pass the bill and then immediately have Biden shitcan all the Republican politicians for not falling in line, then repeal the bill?

The guy that kept Republicans in office, even those who we find out apparently covered up a coup?

Bills like this will always favor Republicans because Democrats would never engage in those tactics.

Democrats should now pass a bill that does the opposite and gives rank and file more protections then they currently have.

It won't pass in this congress. But they are starting this and if they get both Houses and the Presidency, something similar can pass.

It's not going to happen now, certainly. It won't even come up for a vote, it's just posturing.

But the next time the GOP has a majority in Congress, don't count on the filibuster standing it their way. They'll just repeal it, either altogether, or else just for bills pertaining to the makeup of government, or something.

Basically, the next time the GOP is in power, they don't plan to give it up. Ever. And they might have enough power, right now, to pull that off, thanks to their stolen Supreme Court majority.

Good luck refilling those positions

The average MAGA doesn't even meet the requirements for most federal jobs.

In the weeks between the 2020 election and the January 6 attack on the US Capitol, almost 100 text messages from two staunch GOP allies of then-President Donald Trump reveal an aggressive attempt to lobby, encourage and eventually warn the White House over its efforts to overturn the election...

It's worth noting how quickly this country unravelled after Trump's boy Andrew Jackson actively made a joke out of the civil service the first time.

The stability provided by civil service reform of the late 19th century is often overlooked and a big reason the US was able to attract skilled immigrants into the US, so it's obvious why nativists like Roy want to kill it.

This is performative. It is little more than legislative fellatio from Roy to his all powerful Cheeto Jesus. But make no mistake, they will do exactly this if given the opportunity.

Cons always sabotage government to create a self fulfilling prophecy that the government doesn't work. It is almost always because they broke it.

Exactly why I wanted to point it out. Not because it has any chance of passing, any time soon. Only because it's the next step in the GOP's constant escalation of how destructive they're willing to be, as they march further into fascism.

They can never be allowed into power again. We're too close to the line.
