So, in recent days, Donald Trump and his surrounding brain trust have made public their intent to "purge" the federal government of anyone not "loyal". The mechanism to do so would be to change their employment status to "at will", something Trump tried to do with an executive order called "Schedule F" just before the 2020 election (rescinded by Biden once he took office).
That change would allow about 50,000 federal employees, in addition to the ~4,000 that already change when a new administration takes over, to be fired without cause.
In other words, Trump is not satisfied with 4,000 yes-men. He wants every federal employee to be a yes-man.
Details here:
Trump's 2025 plan includes a nightmare list of Cabinet picks — and purge of career officials: report
Last Friday, Representative Chip Roy, of Texas, introduced a bill called the "Public Service Reform Act", which would accomplish the same thing: to make thousands of federal employees "at will".
GOP bill would strip federal workers of job protections amid Trump plot to "purge" career officials
Of course, this has no chance of passing while Democrats are in control. But the point is: it's not just Trump. This may happen the next time the GOP has the power to do so, whether Trump is president or an inmate.
