please stop.
i just want customizable lock screens like back in the day.
The startup is engaging with wireless carriers in the U.S. for partnerships and is gearing up to launch on several smartphone models by next month
Glance, valued at around $2 billion, serves media and current affairs content and casual games on Android handsets' lockscreens. The service, which has amassed presence on about 400 million smartphones in Asian markets, is building a "premium offering" for the U.S., where individuals have higher propensity to pay for digital services, the source said.

Three-year-old Glance is largely credited for identifying an opportunity to serve content on the lockscreen, prized real-estate which monetization has enabled smartphone vendors to boost their revenue in recent years. The startup personalizes content feed on the lockscreen based on users' interests, prompting them to engage deeply with content.

Tried to find the smartphone model and carriers they've inked deals with but it's not in the article. Their current deals are with low cost Smart phones in India so I suspect the same. Even in the ad friendly US I don't see this taking off.

Fwiw "google backed" means the venture capital fund from google is an investor in the company. Article is worded weirdly to maximize outrage though, likening glances software to apples decision to launch personalized information in the iOS home screen in an upcoming update.

In a move that further cemented Glance's model, Apple said last month that it will be revamping the lockscreen on iOS with widgets, real-time info and other personalization features.

Glance uses AI to offer personalized experience to its users. The service replaces the otherwise empty lock screen with locally relevant news, stories and casual games.

While home screen widget have been a thing for a decade I kinda doubt smartphones will be prominently featuring ads on the unlock screen in the US at least on common manufactures and carriers, at least more so than happens today with ads bundled as notifications, which annoys me with iOS and android.

If it's anything like Google-owned YouTube they'll show racy ads with anime ahegao in excruciating detail. No thanks.

Glad I use an iPhone.

If this popped up on my Galaxy, I'd probably instantly stop using the phone. I already paid 1000+ dollars for your device, why should I have ads? Already annoyed with the Samsung weather app having ads in it.

Don't buy these phones. Otoh, I never even see my lock screen since it's unlocked by the time I see it. Rear fingerprint reader ftw

I'm 37 and have never owned an Apple product in my life. This would be the one thing that would make me switch.

I can turn this off, right? Right??!!
If T-Mobile is taking part in this, and I can't turn it off, my monthly fee better go down.

Come to think of it, kind of odd Android device lockscreens have remained ad-free for so long. Evil ad fucks sleepin'.

Are the ads gonna take control of your phone and not allow you to exit them like the ads on ERA do?

I can't speak for other countries, but in the United States if this became widespread it would basically cement Android as the "uncool" and undesirable phone for a long time. "I guess your family is too poor to get the phone without ads", etc.

I'm really not sure how much worse it can get

Gen Z survey says 87% of US teenagers own an iPhone | AppleInsider

The latest Piper Sandler teen survey shows that iPhone use has gone up, as has the popularity of the Apple Watch, and Apple Pay.

I will do everything I can to avoid this. Change/avoid carriers, companies, phones. I'll mod or root my phone if I have to. I'd even buy Apple for the first time ever. I hate ads. It's a shame you need a smart phone now.

Governments need to regulate this kind of stuff so it only comes through a customer actively choosing it.

Yeah, this is exactly what would happen, I think. There absolutely would be a point where some sexual AD gets through a filter and it'll put almost-porn on your lock screen. TikTok absolutely has an issue where borderline content makes it way to young kids/teens or worse, when someone promoting their onlyfans or sex-work accounts ends up being seen by those underage. I've also seen kids get ads in their iPad and Phone games for other games that are sexually suggestive in nature. I can't imagine this not sharing the same potential issues. It's nuts.

I want to be clear that I'm absolutely not shaming anyone that does SW or has an onlyfans, I'm merely stating that those kinds of suggestive videos for sure are seen by people too young for that kind of content and having a glorified ad roll on your lock screen would absolutely have the same possible issues.

The minute I see an ad pop in my S21 will be the day I switch carriers/move to Iphone which I would not like to but it would be the only viable option.

Am I remembering wrong or did some Android models have ad bars in their settings menu? I feel like I messed around with one once at a store and the OS settings had ads, unless that was a fever dream. If so, this seems like the next logical step. 🤮

From 'quake area to big OH.
Yeah, I had this. Honestly it wasn't that bad, just swipe it away. But I purposely went for the cheaper ad supported tablet so I knew what I was getting into.

Yeah. If it's opt in, and a path exists to escape then it's not hurting anyone. As long as people know what they're getting into.

If the phone is $200 cheaper, how many will sign up. If there is no discount or it's something like $10 subsidy then fuck that.

What about an incentive for unlimited high-speed data?

In recent months, the startup has been testing live commerce on its platform and is also engaging with television vendors to bring Glance to their customer TV operating systems.
:/

I already hate the small ad rectangle Samsung puts in their TV menu (though it was easily blocked with Pi-hole), this seems a million times worse. Such bullshit when you pay for a product and these companies continue to make money off you by putting ads throughout the OS.

I had one of those shitty Blu R1 phones from Amazon that had lockscreen ads. I ended up finding a forum post that showed you how to root it and remove them, worked like a charm.

Looks like every Android user better learn how to ADB uninstall some APKs. Or in the case of Samsung owners, install the unlocked firmware on their carrier phones.

This won't hit the expensive phones, though. We pay too much goddamn money to get an ad on our lockscreens we can 100% entirely ignore with face unlock.

Want ads on my lock screen? Pay me.

But even then, fuck off I don't want them.

My smart TV only touches the internet for occasional firmware update for this exact reason.

Oh yeah, I already have to disconnect my Smart TV from the internet outside of updates to avoid this kind of crap (and will be very careful with the next purchase to avoid it; I was too careless getting a Samsung).

I Hate ads so fucking much
I hate ads so much, ever since I was an adolescent, every time a commercial would come on TV, I'd hit mute and turn my head away from the screen. Only when I saw out of my peripheral vision that the program was back, would I again look directly at the screen and unmute the TV. I've carried this practice into adulthood with online streaming.

A phone that does this sort of thing is not a phone I will ever own.
