As someone who has seen this shit overtake fandom, the term is losing its meaning and impact.
Was the article shit? Yeah. I'm still surprised that even got approved to be published to begin with. ESPECIALLY with that 3D model. Is it CP/CSEM? As gross and skeevy as it is? No. Because for it to fall under that category it would require the participation and exploitation of an actual minor for that content to exist. In other words you are distributing actual evidence of an abused child. Trust me- if that shit was the real deal we wouldnt even be here TALKING about this OR, Kotaku OR the writer because they'd be in jail.
Why am I making this distinction? Two weeks ago a minor- 14 year old, on Twitter who ran a popular Twitter cringe account struggle_tweetzz got suspended-and is more than likely being invesitgated for posting actual censored CSEM in a callout post. They dont understand why THIS instance was wrong when they had made similar callout posts over fictional porn. That's because they were told that there is no difference between Misty porn and actual CSEM. The former constantly posted online with zero reprecussions. CP/CSEM are NOT terms that should ever be thrown around lightly.
Call it skeevy. Call it gross. Call it reprehensible and disgusting. But if you are going to claim someone is boosting an actual crime make damn well sure you are using that correctly. HP porn and CSEM are two entirely different beasts and distilling the term to equate the two as one of the same is going to lead to well meaning people getting locked up on charges that will permenantely ruin their future.
