The arguing over several posts the semantics of the thread title is way more interesting than anything in Days Gone.

I tried to see what people liked in it but it was just so boring to me. Shame the fans aren't getting a sequel.

I've been somewhat interested in this game since it came out on PC, but as I remembered it getting average reviews when it was launched on PS4, I've been careful before parting with my money. So over the past few weeks, I have looked at several opinions and other bits about it and my conclusion has been that the whole discourse around it is so offputting, that my interest is completely gone.

And I mean not only discussions like this one, or the reviews mentioned, but even stuff like tweets that I've seen from the devs and the main voice actor with a kind of smart ass passive aggressive attitude that makes me not want to give them my money.
If you have PS+ its 'free', that might assuage some guilt for you?

The game is solid but it has the traditional pacing problems you will find in any open world game. If you can get lost in the world this won't be a major issue for you, but if you aren't having a good time in the world within the first few hours then you probably won't enjoy it. I would highly recommend searching on ERA about difficulty, gyro controls, etc. I really need to find the thread give me a minute...

Ok, I stand corrected. Doesn't change my opinion on them though lol.

What's wrong with them? They provide pretty intense moments, especially the larger ones. Prior to taking them on you can set up traps etc, learn areas to funnel them through, improve your weapons, increase stamina and focus.

Taking them down also unlocks some decent gear/weapons.

I love how we are imaging that these games are at all similar.

I don't remember riding and upgrading a bike in them, nor having ai clash and lead to dynamic fights, not having a GTA style story.
I was just basing these off as an open-world Walking Dead game and to me, the two I've mentioned also fit the bill. I don't recall in State of Decay because I've played it a long time ago, but enemy zombies and humans in Dying Light can fight each other. And you mention a motorcycle. State of Decay has cars, Dying Light has an upgradable buggy.

I am actually looking forward to playing Days Gone so I hope it's fun!

Nothing wrong with them inherently, I just got bored with the gimmick after a few hordes and getting resources for them felt like a chore to me. I just don't want to do 20 of them or whatever.

The game isn't awful but if you come from expecting Sony polish, it definitely feels a bit worse. I recall distinctly thinking that a lot of the main character's voice acting was all over the place (Deacon angrily shouting at person at whoever he was talking to, even though the person was calm), especially since it came right after Spider-Man, which famously had two voice tracks based on what Peter was doing.

Still, fighting hordes was easily the highlight.

Actually one of my minor criticisms of the game (apart from the major ones like writing and uneven voice-overs). At the point when you probably embark on the the majority of the horde killing, you want a whole lot of molotov and napalm cocktails and maybe some kind of bombs. But you cannot buy those, only grenades. You also can't prepare and store them in advance but only carry 6 of each at maximum. I wish they put in a late-game option for purchasing crafting materials. For that reason I fnished quite a few smaller hordes only with a heavy machine gun and maybe a grenade or two.

Ah I see

The thing is that Days Gone has a much bigger scale and the motorcycle in it feels more like Mad Max than anything but more deep into the zombie survival experience. Most people compare the game to these two games when the style of game play is just too different. While they do have things that could be compared, the AI in Days Gone is even more dynamic and could lead to encounters that feel like missions in other games. You could be doing something and out of nowhere a series of events start getting into the mix and it turns chaotic. By that I mean simple things like going to look for gas only to then get ambushed and have zombies attack because of the sound and while you are fighting both you could have other type of zombies (zombies attack each other depending on the type) could start attacking you. Not to mention the animals getting into the mix. The game is a series of different systems interacting and there is nothing like it.

Sorry if I came out a bit aggressive. It is just that so many people keep recommending these games when they don't share the same style of game play. Days Gone is more like Undead Nightmare and that game has nothing like it.

My favourite game of last gen. Its only flaw is that it takes too long to get to the second part of the map.

Edit: Also it's funny that Girlfriend reviews is the one saying that. My wife doesn't play games but she will sit in the room while I play. This is the only game she liked watching me play so much that she ended up playing it herself and helped me complete it. She was really sad once we'd done everything in the game.

I agree with this. Maybe not my favorite game, but it's high on the list and I'm having a blast all over again with the PC version - The gameplay loop and atmosphere/world building is so good! The game doesn't get enough credit for how great it looks either. Easily one of the best looking games around. The overall quality of the assets used is amazing. The UE4 lighting and use of fog/volumes is sublime.

Thanks for your time, man.

I guess that's kinda been my main issue so far as in, how much is this like a Ubisoft icon collect-a-thon you know? As an example, not long ago I went for Horizon Zero Dawn and even though I absolutely loved the world, the visuals and the monster robots combat, I was just so done with the whole thing after about 15 hours and the last 5 hour + stretch after that was painful, but I finished it.

So I guess I'm just really wary of another such experience.

It's been the opposite for me: I watched ChristopherOdd's Let's Play of it, thought it looked interesting - just not enough to get a console to play, and the sheer hatred it gets has only made me more interested in playing it myself. Honestly, I play a lot of Open World games and I don't remember it looking any worse than say the Far Cry & Assassin Creed games which I found.... okay (played all of them up to Valhalla/Far Cry 6 with no interest in playing either of those or any new ones).

Then again, I don't really mind playing janky/indie/below "AAA" level games. Just from what I remember, it did look like an average game - not the greatest game ever, but certainly not the worst either.

And you're a Battlefield fan, lol. My fucking sides are splitting.
Can't really compare the two. One is a competitive online shooter, while the other is heavily story driven. You have to dig deeper in my post history and compare it to something more similar to it, battlefield is not the one.

I'm really not kidding when I say that I question people's taste in games if they enjoyed Days Gone. I expected the hordes to be the main focal point of the game, but they were just little obstacles or just another objective mark on the map, which was a complete opposite to what was portrayed in the trailers. I was expecting a proper zombie game, but instead we got a weird bike gang soap opera instead for a story.

The hordes are so fun once you've unlocked better weapons, traps and levelled up. Some of the most fun I had last gen was clearing out the big hordes.

I don't know, it probably has something to do with people acting like it yeeted their cat across the room.

In terms of any example of games to follow, help me and others out. We are looking for an open world game that lets you enjoy the environment with scavenging mechanics and hordes of NPCS trying to kill you. Ya got one?
Dying Light.

Also, I think you misunderstand what I mean when I say "I wouldn't use any part of it as an example for other games to follow."

I totally agree with the video. I only played this game because I got it for free in the collection with PS5. I played 4 hours. I hated the character design and the game wasn't fun. I feel kinda cheated though. I didnt get any of the fun glitchy shit like in the video. I just got a bland ass game with a psudo tough guy biker main character.

I guarantee if this game was on Xbox as well it wouldn't be getting the same criticism from some here. Its just as good an open world games as any recent Assassins Creed / Far Cry games.

tried it on PC after all the rave from users, and the game is just not good. the characters are also incredibly bland.

Gave it multiple tries over a few days too.

It's not just criticism on here though is it? The game was critically panned when it was released.

Mainly because of bugs etc but overall they have all been sorted, this isn't some Cyberpunk level of junk (last gen consoles). On the PS5 it really comes to life with the higher resolution and framerate, and now the PC version with all the bells, whistles and mods.

I just don't know how people call it mediocre or bland, but hey I loved Mad Max and Rage 2 and thought all three games were some of the best open world games released last gen.

No, I can't agree with you there. Ubisoft games tend to be creatively bankrupt to a certain extent, but the criticism found in the video (or here) is fairly specific to Days Gone.

Got this game free from a friend and it was absolutely awful. terrible pacing, lacklustre writing and poorly implemented features.

Nothing quite spells excitement in a video game than stopping to spend ten minutes fixing your motorbike for the 95th time.

I was gonna comment that Girlfriend Reviews' first mistake was covering an exclusive title, but based on the traction this one has gathered perhaps they're onto something, lol.

Halo avatar.......yeah checks out.

Fixing your bike the 95th time? Can you actually play the game properly? I didn't even fix it that much throughout the entire game. I really can't take comments like this as a real opinion 🤔.

One of my steam friends reviewed Days Gone and basically said that RDR2 got nothing on it, it's that good.
Some people just have an awful, weird taste. Isn't that why these kind of games exist in the first place ?

I like Halo? So? I also like Zelda and Detroit Become Human is that also relevant to my opinion?

"95th time" was hyperbole but it's still a really stupid mechanic. The game was slow enough already it didn't need more artificial slow down in the pacing.

I played the game once and had started another run to try for the platinum but honestly just got tired and bored. The game had a good concept but I personally found it dreadful.

Shouldn't take my not liking the game too personally my guy, everyone's allowed to like different things. Fuck I think Dark Souls is one of the worst game franchises ever made are you gonna be mad at me for that too?

23 pages of arguing over it is interesting, because its not in a divisive debate way (ala TLOU pt2). Its just that this kind of game floats the boat of some and not of others. I can definitely see myself wasting some time on a game like this, but not being blown away, and yet if I'd found it at another point in time I would probably find it an enjoyable diversion. It could be JUST what you're after sometimes. Equally, might be a total turn off for others.

I watched the video and was really glad I never got round to playing this though, as it sounds like everything I dislike in the current big, open world AAA games (especially pace wise)

Personally I still don't understand half the arguing about TLOU pt 2. That was arguably my favourite game of the last Gen next to Death Stranding and DOOM.

I tried really hard to enjoy Days gone because it is a stunning looking game. It just doesn't deliver as far as story and gameplay goes for me.

I'll never understand the hate for Days Gone. It plays brilliantly. The gameplay loop is fun as hell.

TLOU2 on the other hand is boring shite that I wouldn't feed to rats if you pressed it in tablet form. It has far worse slow-walking for long stretches than Day Gone ever had and it has a lame hamfisted, contrived plot with the most boring and whiny characters imaginable. It was pure torture, but it looked great (not as great as Days Gone though, except it has better interiors).

Yeah it's great for fans of those games tbh.

There was also a lot of criticism around the game being bland and a totally average open word game, and it being set in a zombie apocalypse didn't help it. But the bugs probably played a major part in dampening Sony's confidence in the IP.

I can definitely see the game has its charms and probably is a solid 7.5-8 without the bugs and if the control issues were fixed.

Also, I've noticed Sony doesn't seem to respond positively to games that are buggy/have major technical issues at launch. DriveClub launched with a bunch of features missing and server issues (it's dead), Days Gone had a load of technical bugs (now it's dead) and then we have Cyberpunk most recently (still not on the store).

Anybody bringing up console/game/etc fanboys should stop. Liking or not liking a game shouldn't lead to this discourse. It is just taste.

I really hate the fact liking this game leads to me being called or implied to be a fanboy. As if this game can't be enjoyable to people.
