Now if he wants to hand Josef Fares a mic and let him go off, that'll be something.

It is not surprising, but maybe other publishers should think about working together with Keighley in future.

I understand if he can't pull out of plans that were already made before this all came out and are enforceable by contract. But it's absolutely cowardly to not even make a statement. Could this burn bridges with Activision going forward? Sure. But frankly TGA don't need activision to succeed and I don't think the show would crash and burn it in the following years they just don't include them

Why would they? This is a prime advertising opportunity.

Nintendo or Microsoft and whoever else that sent public or internal memos about Kotick aren't about to back away from a major ad block.

All these people are in bed together, no matter what "brave" stance they put out there.

I don't even think Konami was on the advisory board (then again I don't remember), which allowed the call out to happen. That being said, it doesn't look good at all to be silent, even if there are business reasons behind it.

Edit: mobile misclick

This is super disappointing from Geoff and absolutely means they got some Activision announcements planned. It sucks.

This isn't a surprise. It's a mainstream event with a focus on marketing under the guise of "celebration." Keighley isn't an activist. Other presenters and people accepting awards might go off-script though. (Josef Fares, I'm looking at you.)

If you want people speaking truth to the current realities of working in the industry, awards shows like the IGF Awards offer that.

No matter what the corporation has done or failed to do or if the CEO of the company threatened to murder multiple people, it's fine. Because at the end of the day, we're just here to recognise great games at The Game Awards and boy, do we have a huge reveal for you now

WORLD PREMIERE

World of Warcraft... on console!

It's honestly kind of fucked that Geoff did a big empassioned speech about his best friend not being allowed at his little awards show because of Konami, but he'll show Activision stuff that has gotten so bad that even all 3 console makers have spoken up about it as long as the cheque clears.

I wish I was surprised.

Not making a stand, while it's by no means good, wouldn't sting so much if he hadn't made such a big deal out of the Kojima/Konami situation several years ago. :/

Was that worth discussing? Yeah, probably? Was it more important than some of the stuff he's dodged? That's a no.

When will people realize "not taking a side" is till making a statement. Especially when the charges brought up about Activision are so serious. Damn Geoff cmon man.

Keighley is an Elon Musk stan, so this isn't surprising.

He's done some good work highlighting accessibility and things like that but his mindset is probably:

1. Need game awards as a platform to highlight accessibility and 'games for change' or whatever
2. Need money for game awards
3. Need publishers for money
4. Need to be nice to publishers

Still, it's pretty craven. He probably takes pride in not being political but ultimately it just means he doesn't value other people enough to put in the work.

Criticizing ActiBlizz has never been a safer bet than right now and it is a waste of a platform to not highlight the tangible human cost associated with that company. This is not a celebration of the year in gaming if it ignores the absolute win that is uncovering and bringing to light the abuses and mistreatment many devs have labored under for years at ActiBlizz.

honestly, it was pretty dumb of him to burn bridges with konami, they'd probably be glad to show metal gear remake or a new silent hill at one of his events.

Shitty stance no matter what but can the game awards continue without Activision and Ubisofts pockets?

I'm shocked….
The TGAs continue to be a vassal of empty hype and advertising for the industry and little else

I really don't know why people continue to give the TGAs such clout as they are extremely reliant on the reveals to be relevant

Not shocking. Though he isn't both siding it - he just doesn't believe it's the right platform for it. I disagree obviously - but I would hope that there is at least a general acknowledgement of support to developers dealing with this - even if they don't have a specific statement against Activision.

You can't just say harassment is bad and we expect companies like Activision Will take steps to eliminate it from the industry? It's that hard…? Also "sides", there is one side. Harassment and enabling it is Bullshit. That should be the only side. Even the big 3 seemed to call out Activision and Kotick the last few weeks. I mean come on. 🙄
I'm REALLY interested as well what the "sides" on this are by his definition.

Going to point out what his exact words are before people take Kotaku's embellishment and run with it.

""We want to support employees and developers."

"[Keighley] added he supported people coming forward with their stories but also didn't want to diminish developers' opportunities to spotlight their games."

"We have to think very carefully about how to proceed here"
For me that and saying nothing is the same.

You have to take a strong position defending women and workers, you can not say "well we'll see what we can do, developers yikes"

Being critical of a company that drove someone into suicide because of sexual abuse *sleep* being critical of Konami because Kojima can't attend the awards *real shit". /s

Sorry garbo stance. Too bad it won't get the boo's it deserves.

Like man even the suits at sony and ms managed to give the most milquetoast "that's disturbing/disgusting" stance on this but TGA can't even do that cause they want to reveal something for blizz act? At least have the decency to bar them from the even until they fix their shit.

So, It is correct to inmediatly throw Konami under the bus for not allowing his friend Kojima to get the award, but now he won't choose a side, hmmmmm

Friend is the key word here I think. I know from experience that people act/think differently when it gets personal. I personally despise the fact that people are like that but it's how it is.

Plus it's easier to shit on a Japanese company that was basically not relevant in the industry anymore.

Not sure why anyone would be surprised. I'd like to say i'd take a stand and not watch the event but I already wasn't interested so I guess this doesn't change much.

Activision really must be a big part of the sponsorships and have Geoff grabbed by the balls.

Was he asked about it? If he brought it up on his own then that's dumb cause the smart play would be to just not say anything

This is a bad call. Saying they will not takes sides is basically passively taking a side.
