getting new characters for free is time gated, getting a decent amount of EXP is time gated behind daily quests. Higher and higher AR will have you just waiting for the next daily quests to pop up. Upgrading weapons/artifacts have materials that are again time gated but not that heavily by the domain entries. Incredible how "it is fun" is your comeback after my response. My whole point is that being fun is part of why this is predatory. Winning money in a casino is also "fun". But i know this discussion is futile, so its whatever. I do wish people could separate fun and other aspects of game though
It's a game that releases content every month, so it's not really relevant to act like you need to sit down and 'beat' the game in some period of time - you aren't beating it anyway, you don't need to spend a time to level up to get to the end game, it doesn't take an intense amount of time. Yes, you CAN opt to spend a bunch of money and grind it all out much faster, but you aren't encouraged to do it. Not saying you don't NEED to do it - saying you absolutely shouldn ot do it and they don't make you feel like you're missing out if you don't. Big difference.

I've spent money on the game, not going to pretend I haven't, but I have never spent a DIME on bypassing 'time gates' or whatever - I just log in, do what I want, and log off, and I'm completely caught up on everything despite starting months after the game came out. It's simply not a factor like you're pretending it is.

I never spent a cent on the game, and there is currently no content i have not been able to do.

For the most important and fun part of the game, exploring the world for chests, puzzles, quests, and combat, you don't even need to interact with the gacha elements. You start the game, you're given a small cast of diverse elemental affinities, and you're let loose to lose some 80 odd hours to perfectly enjoyable action rpg, soon to be even more with inazuma. It's only really hindered by the tropey plot and sometimes annoying characters all of which is presented in dialogue scenes you can hammer through if you're uninterested to get back to the good stuff.

Once you complete the exploratory content, you should absolutely let out a contented sigh for an adventure well enjoyed, and then uninstall the game.

However, if, like me, you are also a broken person who likes to see numbers go up you can now interact with the game as a service side, including the resin and gacha sub systems. Chests and easy achievements will give you a healthy starting pool of primogems but once that's used up It takes nearly 5 months to get a character banner guarantee just from the renewable daily and event rewards. We're almost at the anniversary of the game and i have only 2 character banner 5 stars of the 10 that have released in that time frame. I have 'lost pity' or gotten a standard banner 5 star both times it has come up, and i've gotten enough standard banner wishes as rewards that I eventually got one five star that way so I have five 5 star characters total, 3 from the inferior standard pool and 2 from the big splashy character banners. From what I can tell this is the normal and expected rate of character acquisition. As, barring a few outliers, each banner character has progressively been the strongest character in the game, the rate at which you can get a character banner determines how often you can produce the biggest numbers before the next banner shows up and makes even bigger numbers possible.

The end game challenges present currently do not require you to make the biggest numbers. They require big numbers, but so far these more modest big numbers can be achieved with a mix of 4 star or standard banner 5 star characters. You will not be able to transition directly from clearing the exploratory content into making big numbers, it took me until last month to 36 star the abyss aka get all of the rewards possible out of the game, which means about 8 months of leveling up talents and gear and farming for better artifacts and rolling on character banners. This is not a big deal as the primogems you earn from the abyss amount to less than half a banner 5 star a year, and it isn't all or nothing so you will likely go from earning few of those rewards to most of them within a month or two of trying even if full completion takes much more time.

Once you either spend 8 months of playing every day, or spending a bunch of money right away, you will enter into the blighted lands of the lost and the damned, in which i currently reside. In this endless expanse of flat grey nothing you will have nothing left to achieve, you will log on for roughly 10 minutes each day to get your renewable rewards and then spend 50 minutes lovingly admiring a leaked, untextured, t-posing model of a banner character that wont release for 6 months but that you need to start saving for now. Other players will make posts about how much fun the current banner character is, or that they are having fun playing an event, but these players are liars and charlatans. We are all lashed to the great wheel waiting for a false god to bless us, and we always will be.

At least until inazuma comes out and then we get to forget the numbers and have fun jumping off houses and finding chests and shit again, for a little while.

Never played this game and had a few questions;

Can the entire game be enjoyed without paying for content? What kind of content do they sell?

I'm a huge fan of games like Zelda Breath of the Wild, Dragon Quest 11. Etc. Is this game for me?

How difficult is this game's mechanics to learn when compared to stuff like BOTW?

How is the story content? Any good?

The game has cool stuff like characters, weapons, almost all of it is available for free. You get all of it from doing pulls like in other gacha games, and you get pulls for free by grinding and sometimes the game gives you free pulls. The chance of getting something really good is 1 in 10 (if you still haven't gotten a really good thing in nine pulls, your tenth is guaranteed to be a really good thing), the chance of getting something really epic such as a 5 star character is 1 in 100 (starts to become higher odds around...75 or 80 pulls IIRC).

So if you want one of the epic items, like a super buffed character or specific mega weapon, you can pay for a bunch of pulls to give yourself more chances faster, basically speeding up the process.

But it's gambling either way, whether you're grinding for pulls or paying for a bunch at once. You can't straight up buy the hero or sword you want.

If you like those games, I'd say it's a good chance you'll have fun with this. The story is very solid anime adventure stuff, the characters are quite memorable.

1- Yes, you dont need to pay.
2- They sell characters and weapons, but they give the currency to get that in game without paying, but f2p have to think which characters they want from character banners (it increases the rate you can get those), there's also events where they give a character for free. The thing is if you will be f2p you will not have all 5 star character and its a impossible dream to get them buffed (you have to get those characters 6 times to get all the buffs). And f2p shouldnt invest in the weapon gacha, to get "the best weapons" since thats a trap.
3. It reminds botw exploration, but it does not reminds dragon quest 11.
4. Its easy.
5. Mixed, there's good stuff in there, but there's some boring stuff too, the most interesting stuff is usualy backstory so far, its good there's some cool mysteries, but there's some good stuff that you character participates at the end of chapter 2 and 1.

They added a new zone where you drive a boat around a bunch of islands. Lot's of new exploration/chests, very fun and the music is great here.
What was gonna be me logging in to start doing primogem stuff again turned into playing for 3 hours straight and still going.

What is the appeal of this game?

It just looks like more generic twee anime garbage, but I see it all over my twitter all the time.

Is it the world-building? Combat? Characters? Loot?

It looks like a million other JRPG's but is incredibly popular. What's the main draw?

Great story, great exploration ( on par with a game like BOTW, which it is inspired a lot by), lovable characters, fun combat, and ofc if you're into it grinding to make your characters stronger too.

Its not just a ''random anime game''. Playu it yourself and find out. If you liked a game like breath of the wild for example you will love this game too IMO

Yeah, what a great mystery that is...
Take a BotW-type of world, BotW-type of exploration, add a buch of unique anime "waifus" and "husbandos" to play in it, add a fun and flashy action combat system to it, add an actual story to it and give everything a AAA game polish with beautiful visuals and music. Oh, and make it free to play (and it really is that, no single cent spent needed to enjoy everything). Whatever could be the appeal...?

I knew this response would pop up and I disagree on every level. Every predatory game has people coming in and telling others that you can just play F2P as if that is some gift given to us by the creators. Yeah of course there is a "viable" path to play free, no game that says pay $300 every couple months or no new characters for you ever is gonna have a lot of people playing it, this F2P veil lets them hide all their predatory game mechanics and pricing. I have two major issues with this approach. First is, the game is worse because of it: Yeah, you can play F2P but within the first 5 hours you will realize that every single system in the game is designed around gating you and you can trade your time for money in most cases. Many people somehow see this as the "good" alternative, I do not. Games using ludology to try and hook you into playing obscene hours only because the developers decided to gate your progression in real time is not acceptable to me. The very core of playing a game and feeling satisfaction/progression are perverted by these systems to keep you on a treadmill while showing you the easy way forward with money at every turn. The second reason is the straightforward one, this is just promoting addictive behavior and it is well documented that these games use methods to encourage this while narrowly skirting around the law in most countries as the legislative branches are too slow to adapt to new trends especially in mediums like games.

With all that said, I know people feel differently and that is fine, these are just my thoughts and I do think that a discussion on this topic is important just like discussions on other topics like representation/female characterization and other issues that are one step away from reviewing the gameplay experience.
You always have the option of not playing the game. It's free after all, to try and enjoy (or not).
You're never at gun point. Yes, I find the practice pretty bullshit also, but I can't do anything against it besides not playing the game. They won't change their instance or model because some people don't like it.

So how are they getting Raiden gnosis? doubt she is going to let herself be kicked or sign a contract with the Fatui.

MHY will find a way for her to see the error of her ways, giving up on eternity, or Fatui will somehow finagle it outta her, bonus points if Traveler will be the stooge they use to do so.

This specific complaint is objectively false in the specific case of Genshin Impact and most gacha games; the premium currency (and everything valuable you can buy with it) is entirely separate to what you can obtain through grinding. If anything, it's the opposite: as a free player, you're limited in how much you can grind by the energy (resin in GI's case) system, so whales get to play more, not less (which is, itself, a valid complaint; just the opposite of the above).

You're perhaps thinking of MMOs, which often let you purchase grindable currencies (either legally or through shady third-party sites). MMOs and gacha games work on entirely opposite philosophies: MMOs want you to keep play for as many hours as possible so that you stay subscribed month after month, while gacha games limit how much free players can play (within reason) so that whales purchase more "play time".

In terms of objective game quality, separate of any other concerns, I feel like the gacha system works in favor of the game more than against it, weirdly enough, simply because I don't think it's possible at all to have any one game deliver the amount and quality of content it does without such a model.

Of course, and with that said...
The second reason is the straightforward one, this is just promoting addictive behavior and it is well documented that these games use methods to encourage this while narrowly skirting around the law in most countries as the legislative branches are too slow to adapt to new trends especially in mediums like games.

... I fully agree with this. I greatly enjoy the game, especially playing with my SO (both F2P); but just because we, personally, aren't tempted by predatory mechanics, doesn't mean they should not be discussed (and this should go for everyone). I don't feel comfortable paying for anything in the game, even the monthly subscription, precisely because I don't want to financially support a model that preys on others; unlike, say, Warframe which has a much less predatory F2P model, with no randomization at all, that I will gladly throw money at from time to time.

Finally had time to watch the livestream and… wow o__o
The production values of Inazuma have skyrocketed compared to previous regions, this is a crazy ass looking map. Kinda mindblowing

I feel like I've seen too much of this region through this and the livestream, I hope there's plenty of secret stuff still to discover.

Hence the reason why I tuned in for the initial trailer and confirmation of key details (plus free Primo codes) and then immediately tuned out. I want to go into this pretty much blind/unaware of what there is to discover. If Inazuma can replicate - or at least get close - to the sense of curiosity and exploration the base game delivered, I'll be happy. Dragonspine certainly gave me that, so the idea that this is a much larger expansion with differing ways of environmental puzzle-solving, does at least sound promising on paper. Hell, small as it was, I enjoyed the brief moments of "how the hell do I get up there" I had with the Golden Apple area. Gives me confidence Inazuma can deliver on that front too.

Still don't know how this game works. Do you summon the gacha characters or do you actually use them? I really don't like the two main characters.

Think of the game as Pokemon. The "main character" would be the Pokemon trainer, which you get to choose the gender of, but is otherwise an empty, mostly unvoiced vessel for the player. Unlike Pokemon, you technically can use them in battle, but they are outclassed by literally almost every other character, including "common" ones, so there's not much of an incentive to do so.

I feel the main reason the summer islands are being removed is to stop immense filesize bloat for the mobile players. The game is already threatening to be uninstallable for a lot of people stuck with 32gb phones as each update comes (of which there is quite a lot of people using)

The game is only going to get bigger though. Eventually those folks will need to upgrade but yeah it's a fine line to tow.

Yeah exactly, they don't need seasonal stuff bringing the problem even closer to bear. They will probably need to work out some chapter style download system eventually.

Have they added an invert mouse option yet on PC? If not I'm not even going to bother watching this trailer but I wouldn't mind trying the game out if they added it.

Not very happy with this cross save restriction.

I played pc for a little bit before playing ps4/5 respectively i would have like to have had the ability of having the cross save feature where i can combine both accounts into one but looks like i cant without making a brand new account
