Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec and Gran Turismo 4. There are very few negatives to what the games were trying to do, and they were so far ahead of other racing games in a lot of aspects. Some might argue a few of the missions in GT4(Mission 34 on the 'Ring comes to mind), but I think they were finely tuned, and had the requisite difficulty. The only other thing i think anyone could consider bad, is the no crashing/wrecking, but I don't feel it detracted from the games in any meaningful way.

Transistor. Beautifully paced, with the difficulty and your ability constantly ramping up, and exposition (what little there is) never overstays its welcome. Bastion is also good at this, but the game dragged a bit at points.

Edit: Journey is also a good pick.

Quite a few for me:

What Remains Of Edith Finch.
Ori and the Will of the wisps.
Inside
God of War (2018)

My favourite game of last gen witcher 3 still has a few parts that dragged for me.

Shadow Of The Colossus, Bloodborne and Resident Evil 4 for me, I enjoy every second of them.

I know it's been said already, but Super Metroid. None of that game is boring or needlessly frustrating. It's just...perfect.

Super Metroid is definitely one of those as well, considering I played it for the first time when Dread got announced and I'm now on my third playthrough.

I'm tempted to include Zero Mission too, but as someone who just finished it for the first time I still don't know how I feel about the stealth section near the end. It's really cool conceptually and worth it for the pay off but playing through it got pretty frustrating in spots.

I love Sin and Punishment 2, but that last fight was not fun or clever at all. It looked pretty, and that's all it had going for it. I spent two hours at it just to say I beat the game, and never booted up Kachi's path. Love that game though, so much. And the first game.

Kirby's Dreamland is a pretty perfect game. Not as good as what followed it, but very close to the definition of perfect. Length is just right, and no part of it is boring, really.

I can't think of a single game where I didn't wish an element would have been reworked. Even the supposedly tight games fall under this. Portal 2's humor became grating, Inside had pacing issues, Edith Finch has a lackluster ending, and so on. When you combine so elements like narrative, mechanics, scaling, feel, and interaction, then obviously something will come up short. In that light, I suggest that the games where several elements are focused upon and honed to absolute precision best fit the question.

  • Baba Is You
  • Gorogoa
  • Tetris
  • Doom

Midgar, With Love
The way it grows and evolves teaching you the mechanics of the game is ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT.

I played it recently and noticed how in the first chapter they put you in control a single physical attacker to teach you the basics and then give you an AI controlled Healslime to teach you about healing. And then, on the second chapter, you have a party with varied roles and have to use the healing spells for yourself. Astounding for a NES game.

The way they handled teaching the player reminds me a lot of the first level in Super Mario Bros, it's brilliant game design.

Also, the whole Torneko chapter is still an astounding achievement for interactive storytelling.

I love Dragon Quest IV, it definitely deserves a spot with the best entries in the series (III,V, VIII and XI).

Yes! Yes, exactly! All of this.

I haven't played the second game in decades, what was the racist easter egg?

Paying money to the priest makes Megaman brighter, reducing shop costs (and I think shopkeepers say nice comments). Kicking a pig in a certain continent over and over will make Megaman darker in color which increases shop costs, makes shopkeepers say rude comments, and a weapon part dealer (that emphasizes on shady) sells a certain weapon part to you if you're dark colored.

Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition was a gift that kept on giving, even after completion. My favorite Dragon Quest entry yet.

Halo 3 campaign? Even the Flood are fun to fight in this one, being weaker to melee and easier to take down with precision shots, they stop being zombie bullet sponges.

Plus every other mission fighting covenant is unreal, by Halo standards. I feel it's a shorter campaign than 2, but every bit of it is gold.

God of War (1 to 3 and 2018)
Marvel's Spider-Man and Miles Morales
TLOU 1 and 2
Devil May Cry 3
Metal Gear Solid 1 to 3
Titanfall 2
Hollow Knight

There are many more, but those come instantly to my mind.

Feels like the ones that come to mind first are quite exhausted in this thread but I'll try to add a few:
  • Rhythm Heaven Fever
  • Dr Mario
  • Demon's Souls (2020)

Pokémon Black and White aren't even close to my favorites but they are VERY consistent throughout.

Inside.

Was gonna say Bloodborne but is the unseen village bad? 🤔 the atmosphere there is a high point both if you get taken and after beating Rom. I used to dislike it but recently played through again and didn't feel that way.

Others off my head: Journey, Tlou2, Sekiro, Returnal, Half Life 2.

There isn't a single second of Halo 3 that isn't perfect.

I don't mean to sound insulting, but there isn't a single second of Halo 3 that I remember.

Personally I think the series that has the most consistently good gameplay, or parts, for me is the Super Mario platformer series. That certainly doesn't apply to all games, but I find a significant number of them enjoyable from start to finish with very few, if any, bad parts.

Muramasa the Demon Blade is what I'd consider a pretty great game with no bad parts as well. From start to finish it was simply a very enjoyable visual spectacle.
