NieR: Automata. I just couldn't get into the game and wasn't really seeing or feeling what so many others were raving about.

RDR2 was just so utterly and mind-numbingly boring, I have no idea how the hell did it ever pass all the focus testing Rockstar must do.

Skyrim lacked the sense of fun that the previous two Elder Scrolls games had in it's combat and movement, so I just could never get into it honestly.

Lisa the Painful. Went in knowing that Hbomberguy wrote a glowing retrospective on it, but the story was an over-the-top mishmash of maudlin and edgelord tropes.

God of War (2018): I found the combat extremely heavy, boring and repetitive. The level design was really bland too. And the story was just okay. I struggled to actually finish it.

The visuals, animations and acting were tremendous, though.

Same here. Game was just OK for me. I felt the boss battles were a letdown compared to the first fight against The Stranger (in shear spectacle at the very least).

However, my biggest gripe with the game was that the very end of the story left me feeling as though I'd just finished a very long prologue for the game I actually wanted to play.

80% of Witcher 3's main story was a chore.

I had 0 interest in everything that happens in the present in H:ZD

I did not care for The Last of Us's characters, nor did I think the ending was at all impactful, which is why I'm holding off buying the sequel.

New Prey, I tried twice to get into it but just couldn't. Maybe third time's the charm! Would love to revisit it on XSX sometime.

The Last of Us

They had a good thing going on there... entire sections where you just explore around and try to figure out who lived in that (now abandoned) house. And then they just ruin it with their logs scattered where a person casually writes "oh, no! I hear them outside. What am I gonna do?" Audio logs but written and bad.

And then you have the gameplay itself where Ellie runs around in front of enemies and nobody sees her or that awful section where you stealthily sneak around to cross an area filled with enemies that respawn until Ellie shoots one of them because emotions, I guess.

It is unremarkable really.

For fun let's add a game you thought was great mentioned after the game you were disappointed by.

I'd love to compare the two and try to glean perspective.

To pick some counterparts from my disappointments...

13 Sentinels has impressed me more than I thought it would. Its gross elements aren't nearly as prevalent as I thought they'd be (though when they show up they're still bad) and I get the feeling by the end of it I'll put it up there with Steins;Gate and 999/VLR in the pantheon of high-concept, slightly silly science fiction games. Maybe if NieR Automata wasn't a by-the-numbers action game I'd have been more on board.

Undertale always felt to me like what Earthbound was hyped up to be, in terms of player impact and humor.

Radiant Historia is basically a less simplistic Chrono Trigger, though I need to go back and finish it.

A few people have already said it but RDR2. The story is weirdly paced and unfocused. Dutch is such a bad character. I thought the first game's story was much better.

Witcher 3. I bought it because some were saying it's one of the best "story" of all time, and the game of the year.

Expectations were not met about the story. I still enjoyed the gameplay and gladly finished it. Geralt was an awesome character with a great back-story, but relationships were pointlessly superficial, and the main story was so cliche it started to feel like harry potter once we entered the third act. Adding more and more grandiose stakes towards the end just made it feel even more cliche.

Same opinion of Dragon Age, Fallout 4, and pretty much any RPG. Great games, great world building, but the actual story never meet expectations. Maybe it's just me who dislike RPGs mandatory story tropes but still enjoy the game genre.

I guess Monster Hunter World. I can tell it's a good game by having played it but the game it is just doesn't jive with me. I'm usually good at telling if I'll like a game and I was certain I would when I picked it up but I just bounced off it. I never played any MH game or any MH-like game before for reference.

Gone Home was a real disappointment for me. The ending happened and I was oh - is that it?

I appreciate my upbringing may have affected that though
Gone Home for sure,I had the same reaction in the end, especially when that ending reveals nothing new of what was already clear since the beginning,a few hours wasted of my life.
Super Mario Odyssey is mediocre at best.

Ori & the Blind Forest. It's not a bad game, I really like the dungeons and chases, but the world design just isn't memorable enough to warrant being a Metroidvania. I also think they REALLY dropped the ball with the story.

killing off the adoptive mother is sad and worked really well to get me invested in Ori's journey. So why the HELL did they bring her back to life at the end? It ruined a lot of the impact from the ending, and retroactively the beginningfor me.

Persona 5. Too many cliche anime tropes and otaku pandering for my taste.
Yup, couldn't get past it and dropped the game pretty quick.

Also, the Xenoblade Chronicles series. Outside of enemy design and world building, I really don't get all the "GOAT" accolades. I really don't see anything special about the stories, characters, quest design or combat.

Nier Automata is significantly inferior to NieR's (Gestalt/Replicant) story. I recall so little of the game's plot aside from the cool twins, the dramatic death and ending.

God of War bores the hell out of me (both the reboot and the old series).

The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky - First Chapter on PSP really did nothing for me at all, especially as I played the superior Growlanser 4 around the same time.

GTA4. I've written far too many times on how I think everything about that game is moldy gutter trash, but the story especially so. As soon as you get to the second island, the game just tank and everything that comes after ruins everything that came before.

The hall across the room
I love narrative based storytelling games I support this genre with my wallet .
2 games recently I will be making narrative disconnected videos on are very loved and defended by fans of both games that I thought were just terrible storytelling in all aspects.

A Plague Tale- It's absolutely amateur in it's narrative approach and the gameplay was tedious. I really appreciate the level of detail in the atmosphere but the story was just bland.

Tell Me Why- Life is Strange is incredible in terms of creating character arcs that subvert expectations. Tell Me Why is the weakest Dontnod game since Remember Me. I was so dissapointed that the story is pointless and has ZERO character growth based on your bias towards did the characters have a reliable memory. Playing it feels like someone had a great ideal and walked away with the actual details of the plot and we are left with 3 episodes of you do pretty much nothing till the final hours. I was incredibly dissapointed by the choices provided toward an outcome that makes no real difference

Yeah Blind Forest definitely did not have to be a metroidvania at all. The world design and the complete lack of anything desirable to actually explore for in the first place was my biggest issue with the game. I still think it's a good game since the platforming is so much fun, though.

Will of the Wisps is amazing, on the other hand.
