Since the re-release of Deadly Premonition and the announcement of its sequel, I've been thinking a lot of Operation Darkness, as I initially purchased an Xbox 360 for Deadly Premonition and Operation Darkness, and they both remain two of my favorite games on the platform. Like Deadly Premonition, Operation Darkness was a total jank-fest, and it had a horrible camera, dated graphics and awful performance, though Operation Darkness never managed to command the sort of following that Deadly Premonition did.
That said, Operation Darkness was a pretty interesting turn-based strategy game set during World War II that offered a wide assortment of characters with their own unique abilities. Sure, there were some oversights in this regard, as the game featured perma-death that could only be fended off by reviving a character prior to the end of a battle, and there was only a single character who was capable of reviving other characters. That glaring flaw aside, the game managed to be really engaging, thanks to its "Cover" system, which allowed you to forego certain characters' normal attack phases to instead set up triggers that'd allow them to perform far more attacks each turn. Plus, some of your characters turn out to be werewolves, and they can change forms to destroy enemy soldiers, tanks and even dragons with a single punch. On the subject of dragons, yes, the Nazis have some supernatural support of their own, including the aforementioned dragons, as well as a band of vampires known as the Blood Clan.
Cue awesome Blood Clan theme music:
Sometimes, I'm kind of tempted to purchase another Xbox 360 just so I can play the game, as it's not playable on Xbox One via Back Compat, sadly. I doubt that it'll ever be re-released, and I'm frankly kind of shocked it was ever released at all, especially on Xbox 360. It just seemed like a really out-of-place game, but I really enjoyed it. While I'd settle for a re-release or it being added to Back Compat (the latter of which is unlikely to happen, even, since Microsoft isn't adding anymore games to Back Compat), I do think a lot could be improved in a sequel.
Here's a trailer for Operation Darkness for anyone who's interested:
So, which unlikely re-releases or sequels do you want to see on newer consoles?
