Yesterday, the Federal Trade Commission announced they are suing Match Group — owner of Match.com, Tinder, OKCupid, PlentyOfFish, and other dating apps — for allegedly connecting users with fake Match.com love interests in order to get them to purchase paid subscription services.

Match.com allows users to create profiles for free, but they have to pay for a subscription service in order to respond to messages. According to the FTC, Match sent emails to people who had signed up for the free version, telling them that someone had expressed an interest and encouraging them to sign up for the paid version. The FTC alleges, "millions of contacts that generated Match's 'You caught his eye' notices came from accounts the company had already flagged as likely to be fraudulent."

In a press release, the FTC said that between June 2016 and May 2018, 499,691 users paid for subscription services within 24 hours of receiving "an advertisement touting a fraudulent communication." The FTC also alleges that Match.com "unfairly exposed consumers to the risk of fraud and engaged in other allegedly deceptive and unfair practices." These practices included a difficult cancellation process as well as a "guarantee" that users would get a free six-month subscription if they did not "meet someone special," without "adequately disclosing that consumers must meet numerous requirements" — a promotion that Match.com shelved earlier this year.

Play with my heart if old.

I guarantee every dating site does this, and conveniently one company does seem to own all the dating sites. I dont understand how they've been allowed to do that, but then that's capitalism.

Kinda figures. From anecdotal stories from friends.. the online dating scene is a mess now. I used it almost exclusively for like a decade (Love@AOL! Through eHarmony) and it was amazing.. glad I don't have to deal with it anymore.

Ok, but will whatever fine they have to pay ultimately be more than the money they rake in from suckering their marks?

I thought these were fake as a matter of course, like those chatboxes that pop up on porn sites showing you HOT SINGLE (your preferences) IN (your area) RIGHT NOW TALK TO THEM.

See this is why I'd never use a site like this. Not when I have hot singles in my area just waiting to meet.

If the FTC is going after dating sites, is there any way they can sue FarmersOnly for that annoying ass jingle?

whew, first post best post.

They got me with this a while back, I used my google fun bucks to check on the okc matches wherein I had 22 of them.

Every single one of them was fake profile and they conveniently caught them all as fake a day or two after I paid despite the fact they had been matched with me for months.

USA
I was subscribed to Match for 6 months and then after I cancelled I started getting more matches than at any point when I was subscribed. I knew what they were doing

At least the ads on porn sites have enabled me to increase my penis size. Era+ size. Length of a pool noodle and the girth of a medicine ball.

I did not know that one company owns all those apps. I guess I shouldn't be surprised though.

Doing this wouldn't make any sense on OKCupid at least, since there's no paywall for being able to match with or talk to people.

Edit: I just remembered the "see who likes you" shit, which I guess would fall under this category

And here I was just thinking of trying an app again. Fucking depressing how much of a meat market/money racket it's become.

The big news here to me is that Match owns all these dating services now? That's garbage.

When I was using OKCupid a couple of years ago they started making a bunch of changes that no one was liking, stuff like needing to use a real name instead of a screen name. Shortly after all that I met my fiance but after we both quit the site we kept hearing how much worse it kept getting. It's a real shame, online dating can be great but when the company treats its customers like this it sours the whole thing. I wonder how many people have just said fuck it and given up instead of finding what they were looking for.

Wait, all of those 'competing' dating apps and sites are all owned by the same company? Lol.

I was on several apps from 17-18 and even in that short time I noticed they all started pushing paid features a LOT harder.

It really just seems like a scam targeting desperate men.
