I think "Jupiter" was part of the funeral for the Space Pope*. After showing the android watching I believe the next Trantor scene is the emperors being told the Space Pope's successor might be the one preaching the genetic dynasty have no souls.

*Can't remember their actual title.

Enjoying the show, but the time skips show a major flaw with the way characters are handled, you constantly have to reintroduce them and make them interesting, when the ones from before were far more interesting.

The actress playing Hardin is fantastic. Tons of charisma.
I apologize, they are quite charismatic. They had a lot more to work with in ep. 4 and they did great.

This has really turned into the Lee Pace show for me.

Also interesting that the youngest clones "flaw" seems to be that he isn't as ruthless as his predecessors. Initially I assumed he'd be even worse than them
I think Day is actually the "flawed" one in ep.4. He is impulsive and angry and violent with outbursts like the baby and the teenager clone whom took off the painting.

The next clone is the kindly one after the "flawed" baby.
And this episode gives me further evidence that Demerzal is definitely plotting their downfall. She knew about the religious leader change, she knows a lot more than we are being told outside of her acting, which is subtle and is great. I bet she even saw Hari's equation, understood it as truth, and is both sabotaging the Empire and ensuring the kindly Dawn will be his own man and someone more in tune with Cleon I. To have him break out of the cycle and return to the person she loved.

The only problem I have with this show is that I need to wait a week for the next episode.
Also Lee Pace is phenomenal

Leah Harvey is far and away the worst actor in the show at the moment. Every scene with their character just shows how slight and lightweight they are.

Edit: I take that back. The 'Leader' of the Terminus colony is just the worst also.

Honestly it seems like most of the Terminus end characters got last minute dialogue and they spent all the time with Empire. The dialogue is sometimes awful like how do they even work with that lol.

I love this show I have a couple of theories that are not spoilers as I haven't read the books and don't know.

Hari had Raych kill him. It was part of his plan.

Salvor is Raych and Gaals kid.

Unless they're playing with the timeline and not telling the viewer (which is completely possible) it seems like Gaal is floating through space while all the Salvor stuff is happening.

My thought is in the second episode they show Gaal get a check up in the birth clinic place. They take something and stick it in a machine. I think she put a baby in the seed bank and that's why she was talking about having kids with Ryach but didn't tell him. Salvor is treated as such an outcast and displays the same abilities as Gaal. Salvor is now seeing visions as Ryach as a kid. Her dad also said if she was better at math and her mom showed her Hari's psychohistory math hoping she could solve it like her birth mom.

caught up on this, enjoy it. Felt like a bit of a bait and switch with Jared Harris.

I really felt that too, I am 100% in for anything with Mr. Harris and the same thing sorta happened with the Expanse, but I loved everyone else so I didn't mind too much. Here, its a bit annoying.

My big, big, big problem with the show right now, and just about to start watching episode 5 so maybe they address it, is that there have been multiple speeches so far about how Psychohistory does not predict the actions of one person, it predicts extremely large populations over large stretches of time.

That flies directly in contradiction with how Salvor Hardin is playing the role of a "chosen one". Only they can approach the artifact. Only they are getting visions of a young boy (??) from the artifact (??). Only they can save Terminus. Only they are smart enough to not rely on the Empire. On and on and on. I really hope its a bit of a misdirect.

So far I wouldn't really recommend the show to anyone, but I'm really hoping the next 6 episodes can change my mind.

Todays episode was amazing - any complaints or issues I've had got removed. It's really committing to the slow burn but it's really starting to pay off.

I'm not sure why people have issues with Salvor - but I think she's got a really interesting role to play in the show and the actress plays the fast talking, fast thinking protector role quite well. I feel like a lot of issues with her role is how radically different the entire show is vs the books - and it's impossible to judge how well thats going to play out until the end of the season. Same with the slow burn of the episodes, I get that book readers already feel well invested in a lot of the characters and environments so they want to see key moments play out - but as someone new to this fiction I feel like 20mins of an episode to establish someones backstory or to spend time with a character to understand their motivations is about normal for a tv show.

The whole thing about Jarred Harris's character, well clearly thats not all played out and I get the bait and switch, but there's clearly a reason why thats played out and I think from this episode onwards that will start to get clearer.

Like others, I feel like there's a really good show underneath here that I hope can be polished up in the second season onwards.

This latest episode was probably the weakest. That fight scene was absolutely godawful and so bizarre given that it still looked high production value but awful shot after awful shot.

The ending renews my faith a little, but it's still got a ways to go, mostly with the Terminus side of things where the characters are harder to invest in. Salvor needs better dialogue AND some more personality (more wit?). Hugo doesn't live up to the persona I think they had in mind for him. On another hand, Gaal's actress is great, but her backstory doesn't really have great worldbuilding or storytelling. Everything Trantor is great (Lee Pace da gawd).

I'm still enjoying it and excited for what's going to happen next, it's just a bit frustrating because it feels like they just missed the mark, but in a very noticeable way. Better dialogue would do wonders IMO.

Yep. It was impossible to tell what the objective of the Anacreons was with regards to the population of Terminus. Were they trying to exterminate them? Capture them? Force their surrender? Loot the city? Everyone was just running around randomly.

There are a dozen absolutely fascinating threads that need to be followed and could have been explored.

Why in the hell was half of this episode rehashing everything we already knew about her on her home planet?

What in the hell was that? We already saw her parents were mad at her, that her planet doesn't like tech, that she won a math contest and her cheek rubies were removed because of it.

I was actually thinking I had screwed up and was watching the first episode again.

Why in the hell did they do that? If there is anything Foundation doesn't need it is filler.

The fucking episode just came out. Can we spoiler that shit just for the next few days? I would love a chance to watch an episode and also participate in these threads without worrying about someone who watches the episode as soon as it premieres talking about everything.

I think I have an idea of where they're going with their interpretation, after watching episode 5. If my hunch is correct then complaints about the character bait and switch, and about Salvor being a chosen one will be addressed in a manner that is consistent with the ideas of the books and will make sense in the show's universe.
I'd continue watching if these are your primary concerns.

My hunch, based on the books is that
Gaal in the space ship is the beginning of the Second Foundation. Hari and Raych faked his death so that he could help her get the organization up and running in secret while still taking advantage of his martyrdom to benefit the cause of the first foundation.
Jared Harris will stay along in the flesh (rather than just as a hologram) at least until the end of season 1.
If this is true then there may be a new subplot to explain why the ship is headed towards Hari's planet rather than Trantor, or the writers decided to change the location of the Second Foundation.
Salvor will be revealed to be telepathic - unknown to her - and this will tie in with the reveal of the purpose of the Second Foundation.
If this is indeed the way the series goes then there's even more the writers could do with this, for example
Hari's upcoming message explaining the current Seldon Crisis could appear on Terminus to be a prerecorded hologram, but in reality be a message secretly broadcast by Seldon in the present. This would allow him to be aware of specific details he couldn't have calculated beforehand, and further cement him as a true prophet in the eyes of the first Foundation, and possibly other planets in the Empire as well.
It would also raise interesting ethical questions about
manipulating faith to serve one's personal goals, and the true mathematical validity of psycho-history. All of this will of course tie back into the purpose of the Second Foundation as an integral part of the plan.
The writers might also decide to add a layer of tension by suggesting that
Salvor or the Anacreons or the Emperor himself were conducting deeper investigations into the artifact on Terminus and the true whereabouts of Gaal and Hari.

yeah i've been a bit down on the show but I did like episode 5, its still just a start and hope it continues to improve and not fall back into confusion.

If you're on the fence and time is important I'd probably just wait until the show finishes its run (5 more episodes) and see what the consensus is.

You know what, this episode was just full of dumb people doing dumb things.

Except Gaal, she's just such an amazing genius scientist considering she grew up in a planet where science is forbidden. Truly unbelievable.

What's there to participate about aside from talking about the latest episode. Who is forcing you to click on this thread?

lol

I'll be honest, this episode was boring for me except for maybe Gaal. Terminus is just so uninteresting. I want to move past all these bit players and get to the actual interesting stuff.

Wasn't too big a fan of the ep. How are you not gonna tell the Empire about a fucking camo'd cannon just sitting there. What in the fuck was that editing between Salvor and Phara, was someone inspired by Taken?

Awful episode.

The beginning in Gaal's planet was both boring and unneeded, simply telling what we already know in a very uninteresting way. Also the way they use math is bad.

The part in the ship might even be worse. Gaal going from desperate and suicidal to determined and smart couldn't have been handled in a more contrived and unsatisfying manner. I just wanted it to end.

The part at Terminus was the best in the episode, which is alarming. You'd think a mighty battleship from the empire wouldn't be so easy to take down, right? Or maybe not. After all, they did build the Star Bridge and that was taken out easy peasy. No wonder the empire is falling. Also, why are some scenes at day and other at night?

Anyway, this episode had a bunch of the things that I hate the most about a story. Not a good sign.

Thought the exact same thing.

Earlier in the episode: Their setting up anti-air defenses!

*Empire arrives in big ship*

Salvor: blah, blah, I think it's all a trap. Maybe hold off (Does not mention large anti-air cannon).

Salvor: DAMN! They cut communications!

😒

Can we please stop posting spoilers for episodes that have not even been out for 24 hours? That's standard for threads discussing shows, and its really annoying to check in and get spoiled the episode within an hour of it being released.

I'm not, like, doing Mod Stuff(TM) here whenever I bring this up, but just common courtesy (I totally get that they're fairly new to the industry so many don't know).

Salvor's played by somebody who identifies as non-binary.

I came into the thread to see what the general vibe and impressions on the show is like now, as I've yet to give it a try myself.

And there are spoilers everywhere =/

No it's not lol.

In threads about really popular shows spoilers are dropped as they're happening.

yeah really strange she did not say anything about the AA
also did not really buy how Gaal could have solved that puzzle growing up on that planet
super high IQ is one thing, but something like that requires experience, too. she also generally seems to be super knowledgeable about everything, how is that possible when books, tech and commuinocation were forbidden her whole life until a few weeks ago?

I just hope we aren't forced to watch another 30 minutes of her boring assed Waterworld life just to show that she read a lot of books that she hid in a jug.
