I'm not sure what Epic's playing at here. I don't think Apple of all companies are going to blink on something like this.

Apple's statement, via The Verge:
Today, Epic Games took the unfortunate step of violating the App Store guidelines that are applied equally to every developer and designed to keep the store safe for our users. As a result their Fortnite app has been removed from the store. Epic enabled a feature in its app which was not reviewed or approved by Apple, and they did so with the express intent of violating the App Store guidelines regarding in-app payments that apply to every developer who sells digital goods or services.

Epic has had apps on the App Store for a decade, and have benefited from the App Store ecosystem - including it's tools, testing, and distribution that Apple provides to all developers. Epic agreed to the App Store terms and guidelines freely and we're glad they've built such a successful business on the App Store. The fact that their business interests now lead them to push for a special arrangement does not change the fact that these guidelines create a level playing field for all developers and make the store safe for all users. We will make every effort to work with Epic to resolve these violations so they can return Fortnite to the App Store.

Points for correctly identifying that Epic wants special treatment for itself, and itself alone.

Is this just in the US or Europe too? It seems like it would be much harder for Apple to justify it under the EU's stricter anti-trust laws

A bit off topic, but can those who already downloaded the game still play it? And if they can, can they download the game elsewhere or they have to use the appstore to get it?

Holy shit.

This is a strategic political move from Epic Games. They know exactly what they're doing.

Now ALL cloud gaming services AND the biggest game in the world is only available on Android.

This feels like the start of a lot of dominoes falling that will lead to Apple being forced to change their App Store policies.
Between things like this and the EU case against them, which this is part of, Apple will either change its tune or, well, change its tune. What they've been doing with these rules is asinine.

I'm deep in the Apple ecosystem and like their products, but I hope Epic hold out long enough to effect change here. 30% on any transaction via the App Store is ridiculous in 2020, especially now that we know that they have special 15% deals for companies they deem important enough. I also want xCloud and Stadia on iOS. Imposing stricter rules on game streaming than film, tv or music streaming can't stay the norm.

Lol this is getting real. I think Tim Sweeney is going to be particularly entertaining to follow on Twitter over the next few weeks!

I could never own a Apple phone or computer for my own personal use. It seems like Windows that is limited to Windows Store (Windows 10S).
