Meanwhile console manufacturers and players still think 30fps is perfectly fine

Those who said you can't market frame rate are wrong, it is happening now and it will keep happening

Personally think like I have previously mentioned, Apple are a big threat to next-gen consoles going under the radar. If they release a 5nm A14X iPad Pro and Apple TV Pro this year / early next, then that could run next-gen games in a really compact form factor. NAND storage is getting really cheap and compact nowadays so there will be plenty of Apple devices soon with terabytes of capacity. They can sell it cheaper than something like Lockhart too while being much smaller. Apple got the security and clout to attract developers to their platform, Nintendo already doing the donkey work of getting developers to port games to ARM.
The consoles could so easily do this running the iPad spec version of the game. The visuals are cut down significantly from the main version.

The big issue with consoles and high frame-rates is that very few consumer TVs even support higher than 60fps.
I doubt it as CPU will be too slow, why does Xbox One X struggle to hit 60FPS with all that GPU power? 2018 iPad Pro is at least 3 times faster than Xbox One X CPU.

The next iPad will be able to handle next gen games like the Switch gets current gen games: infrequently and very cut down. That's more of a threat to Switch than anything else.

Switch is quite weak, it is a heavily CPU downclocked early 2015 SoC released in 2017 which hurts third party games a lot. Even 2017 iPad Pro is three times the CPU and two times the GPU performance, 2018 iPad Pro is about five times the performance which is already a sizeable generation leap released in similar time frame long before even the latest Switch revision. Apple SoCs have been at the cutting edge for many years now in terms of architecture and process nodes, their CPU ARM cores rival the best Intel and AMD have already. Latest iPhone already outperforms Zen 2 in single core performance. Next-gen consoles will be targeting high resolutions and maybe ray tracing so next Apple product should be able to play games at 720p-1080p at similar framerates without too many compromises, should be over 2TF GPU power which is plenty given what the PS4 can achieve. The gameplay which is the main thing should be close to identical.

My wife bought an iPad Pro for like €1000+ and she uses it for netflix, youtube and web browsing. I don't that device has ever been more than lightly tickled on the SoC. I'll have to try and run something more demanding on it one day... if I can muster the enthusiasm to toy with a tablet.

The big issues versus next-gen are thermal limits and power usage. iPad won't be able to compete there.

You were the one that made the comparison lol

Lol i know. Both my mistaken values and the corrected ones are comparing apples and oranges. It's a recent product against an old one that costs 3 times less by now. Show me in a few months how 2020 iPads fare against the new consoles releasing later this year and there's a point to it.

Can't wait to play Fortnite in 4K 120fps on Series X, as imo it's the reason why 120fps was mentioned on next gen consoles, it's for the gaas games that people will keep playing nextgen.

What it is, is that the 2017 & 2018 iPad Pro's have 120Hz displays and they have the GPU's to be able to drive them.

Remember when Apple made "The New iPad" in 2012 (the iPad 3rd gen)? It stayed on the market for only 6 months before being updated. Apple doubled the resolution with this model from 1024 x 768 on the iPad 2 to 2048 x 1536 retina display on this iPad. Unfortunately the GPU inside this 3rd Gen iPad couldn't drive the display well at all, and it was replaced only 6 months later.

Apple learned their mistake and the GPU's inside current iPad Pro's are more than capable of driving these 120Hz ProMotion displays that they come with.

Well, yes, obviously but I'm talking about comparisons to PS5 and XSX.

Looks awful compared to the console versions of the game. Streaming in level of detail at like 5 feet from the player, including shadows. A very compromised way to play the game.

I suppose it would be more work on the developers part, but it would make more sense to me to use the increased performance to push for better detail as opposed to a higher framerate.
I'd say compared to the Switch version it looks the same, but at 120fps vs 30. Kind of agree that it'd be nice to have higher detail at 60 though.

Steam implementation would be an absolute game changer but that will never happen

On the iPad? Well, of course not. Steam isn't a format - it's a store where you buy PC games. An iPad will never be able to run a PC game. You'd need to port every single game to an iOS version first.

Apple and Valve would never do this, however with Valve's continued inroads into Linux, there's an opportunity for portable PC gaming. Just look at this latest CES.

30FPS is fine guys, Era tells me this every thread.

Is Era the one with the neckbeard? I forget.

iPad Pro's are now powerful enough for full And quick video editing of 4K footage. If she bought the 1TB storage version then she would also have the iPad Pro with 6GB RAM.
With iPad OS she can run 3 apps simultaneously, 2 side by side and a third in an overlay window on top.
Honestly, with 120Hz displays, these current iPad Pro's are super slick and super powerful. I have the 2017 iPad Pro which also has the 120Hz display and it is glorious!!

Here's a clip of 120fps on the 2018 iPad Pro for an idea of what the detail looks like. Also, I captured this with the built in iOS screen recording so not sure how that would effect the quality.

This is a 60fps recording.
I'm still impressed that the Ipad could actually record in 60fps while playing the game at 120fps.

Its time for Youtube to upgrade to 4k120fps and 1080p240fps video playback. No reason not to have them when 8k60 playback has been supported for years.

With the relationship between Google & Apple the way it currently is, it isn't possible to view on the Internet what the iPad Pro's 120Hz screen looks like at 120Hz or fps. Unless you record off-screen with a 120fps camera and upload through a different capable movie player that isn't YouTube.

Due to disagreements with codecs between Apple & Google, all iOS devices (including Apple TV & iPad Pro) can only play YouTube videos at a maximum of 1080p/60fps. And on a Mac, to achieve higher resolutions you have to use Chrome browser, not Safari.

It's funny how you people can't just say, oh wow, 120fps on a tablet? that's impressive! then move on.

Instead, we see a bunch of "well technically..."

Why would that be impressive just on it's own? It's not.
Having it be at medium instead of low is *kind of* interesting, but far from impressive still.

Looks great.

For those moaning about the draw distance and shit, just put the graphics on high and you'll get a better draw distance, resolution and gfx and still keep the fps at 60.

Edit: To the above post about battery life. Likely hours.

On my ipad air 3, playing on high@60fps lasts me a good 3-4 hours or more with breaks and browsing whilst playing fortnite.

Brightness levels is what cuts down battery the most.

You are wrong. The Switch version looks identical to the base PS4 version (right down to matching its 900p resolution - which means that it also runs in a higher resolution than the Xbox One version), with the only differentiator being the halved framerate.

The mobile version uses a bespoke set of assets that is heavily downgraded from the console versions.

But you would have to have a 120Hz screen.
Well that's the same problem as on PC then, if people want to be able to make use of the 120fps option they just have to get 120hz compatible screens. Anyway even if you can't see the 120fps because of your screen's limitation, you have other benefits of having more FPS other than that

Also, the previous gen iPad Pro start at $350 on eBay for 10.5 models with the same SoC. Still a lot of power in its own right, although lacking 120Hz mode in this update.
Not the same SoC. iPad Pro 10.5" has an A10X, whereas the 11" (3rd gen) as a significantly more powerful A12X.

Also, Apple doesn't make this very transparent but the iPad Pro 3rd gen has 50% more RAM (6GB instead of 4) if you go for 1TB storage, an option you don't get with the 10.5.

edit: my bad! Now I see you meant the same as an Apple TV, not the same as the current gen iPad Pro. Sorry about the mixup
