New York Times: Trump considered selling Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria, former acting Homeland Security chief says

President Donald Trump considered the idea of selling Puerto Rico in 2017 after the island was devastated by Hurricane Maria, the former acting Homeland Security secretary told The New York Times in an interview published Friday.

President Donald Trump considered the idea of selling Puerto Rico in 2017 after the island was devastated by Hurricane Maria, the former acting Homeland Security secretary told The New York Times in an interview published Friday.

"The President's initial ideas were more of as a businessman, you know," Elaine Duke, who was serving as DHS' acting secretary when the hurricane hit the island in September 2017, told the Times.

"'Can we outsource the electricity? Can we can we sell the island? You know, or divest of that asset?'" Trump reportedly said, according to Duke in the newspaper interview. "(She said the idea of selling Puerto Rico was never seriously considered or discussed after Mr. Trump raised it.)," the paper reported.

The Shock Doctrine is some of the vilest shit and I can't believe that the US is getting away with it again with a community that is as close aligned as PR.

Who would actually buy Puerto Rico? China? They have been silently buying buildings around the San Juan area for years now.

There really is no bottom is there?? We would have hit the floor of the Marianas Trench a long time ago before we even dream of rock bottom. Endlessly falling downwards, only dreaming when you'll be granted the swift mercy of hitting rock bottom is its own kind of hell isnt it??

Bet some republicans would be down for it, that way they can't become a state either.

Probably. Not only have they been doing the San Juan thing. But before Maria (or Ricky protests not sure) some Chinese investors were also going to invest over $400 million in Arecibo and other municipalities in the northern coast.

Trump: How much is this island worth?

Advisor: Sir, that's Puerto Rico.

Trump: Ok, good. How much can we sell it for?

Advisor: .....

Yeah, looked it up, just before Maria, $200 million just in Arecibo.

And I wouldn't be so sure. I'm sure some economical powers would want to acquire us simply because of our geographical position, and would ignore the debt. Because in the long run, the benefit of having a centralized hub to export and move their products across the globe, is more than what the debt they will be acquiring.

So crazy that this probably won't make a dent in his poll numbers. Luckily he's not doing good right now. But his cult will never care that a sitting president considered selling off a US territory with millions of American citizens to the highest bidder.

This is ridiculous from a "business" perspective. Basic supply and demand says that the supply of obtainable national land on the international market is effectively non-existent, which is the entire reason China's snarling and biting at anyone nearby to try and snap up every seemingly worthless scrap of sea-level sandbar they can lay claim to.

The price for a legitimate, developed state at this point would be borderline incalculable.

Well, that's because the tax situation is advantageous. That changes if their federal government bought the island.

If that was the lone reason, they wouldn't had settled on Arecibo. That municipality has one of the highest municipal taxes and permits on businesses across the island. Central Gov., may had given them some tax exemptions, but municipal contributions in Arecibo can rapidly kill a business.

"We promise we will let Puerto Ricans live the same way for 50 years!"

Only that this time in Mandarin! And with a new cycle of forced sterilization on Puertorrican women, experimenting on our people, suppresing cultural symbols, and using us as meat shields in any world.

Try to sell the one with non-whites.

Try to buy the one with whites.

I wonder why 🤔

(Racism. It's fucking racism from a guy whose daddy was a card carrying KKK member.)

Imagining someone like China, Russia, Iran or North Korea buying and placing mid range missiles on the island 🙃

Buying Greenland, selling Puerto Rico. Sounds like someone played too much Monopoly.
