All the shows will be on Hulu, Netflix...etc in a year,

Not even the content creators had faith in Quibi, so they take the money and signed a 1 year exclusive deal,

this thing will die before a year anyway, someone already has a lawsuit because they stole the video shifting technology idea from some person.

2 months left for the introductory 90 day trial, yeah people aren't going to pay after that.

The shows don't magically become proper length episodes when the deal expires. Does Netflix even want 5-10 minute shows? We'll see.

I guess they could wind up on YouTube.

Has to be one most forced, 'trying to make fetch happen' products in recent history. I hope it fails gloriously

Who could've possibly guessed that

*checks notes*

charging MORE than fucking Hulu for content starring such huge names as

*checks notes*

Dark Phoenix star Sophie Turner and

*checks notes*

Liam Hemsworth, star of "I'll never be as famous as my brother, even if I live to 200"

wouldn't be successful?

WHO COULD HAVE POSSIBLY GUESSED?
you take too many notes :^o

TBH, I forgot Quibi existed until just now. The ad campaign (On YouTube) just sort of disappeared here. Which sucks because for me it's been replaced by pro-Trump ads and I'm so fucking sick of it.

You mean those commercials where they had celebrities pretending a Quibi was a term for a 10 min break didn't work?

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

I had a vague idea of what Quibi was after seeing those Sophie Turner YouTube ads but I totally missed that it was something you had to pay for. I do not see what it brings to the table for the audience it is trying to go after.

I feel like this might finally be the project that disproves my long-running theory that anything can be rendered watchable simply by the inclusion of Donal Logue.
Ready for this, he plays a real life character on the show. Donal Logue plays Dan Harmon

As for this? That's what you get, you wasted money and TikTok and everyone else ate your lunch!

That golden arm clip is completely Sam Raimi style of hokey humour. Hope people aren't taking it seriously.

I have a feeling that Reno 911 will probably be the only worthwhile thing to come out of Quibi. It helps that the series was basically a series of short sketches, anyway. I just hope it's eventually released somewhere else and isn't tied to Quibi forever.

Never even heard of it but uh YouTube exists, no reason to use this app. The AAA short film market ain't exactly booming.

This whole thing sounds like something that would be bundled with a Nokia N-Gage, the Gizmodo console and extra points for a weird format like the UMD.

It's an interesting idea for a streaming platform but there was a real risk in the delivery.

overall, it seems like there's a group of new video services looking a bit rough. Peacock/max will be interesting to watch,

It would have died a much slower death without the pandemic, but the quarantine sure did hasten that to light speed.
"Will I watch one more episode of Tiger King on my 50 inch TV with my loved ones who also can't go out or will I be kinda anti social and watch a few clips on my phone... that I also need to pay for?"

I still check this every other day. I think the value proposition is all wrong: to me, it's an app that won't cannabalize your brain cell or lead you down an algorithm with alt-right propaganda.

Anyways a good way to sell the service would be to make content that isn't available elsewhere. Focus on communities whose stories are completely unrepresented in popular media.

This was the most obnoxious advertising I ever seen. Everywhere I went I saw ads for Quibi.

I mean, I don't think he's wrong that COVID dealt a huge blow to the service. I had been seeing ads for this everywhere before it launched, and it's idea was that it was "prestige" video content you could watch while on the bus, train, waiting in line at the popular lunch spot, waiting to get your hair done, etc- it was a service for people who commuted, with it's videos designed to be watched either portrat or landscape, with brief run times.

There is a giant variety of content, from stuff that would be more fitting to being on youtube, to revivals like Reno 911, to attempts at Prestige shows. The content was designed not to be binged, but to watch 1 episode at a time over an infrequent period.

Of course, they launched in April, when the entire country was on lockdown, so they were doomed. The only way to watch is with a phone, and who is going to watch videos on their phone when they have their TV in front of them? They probably should have delayed the launch of the service as long as possible. I don't think this is neccessarily a bad idea, but i'm not sure it's something worth paying money for
Yeah, when I saw them selling it as a thing when you're out and about, I knew it was in trouble. Also trying to make it a measurement in time before people understand how long that time is? 15 min? 5? 1?

Yeah people are stuck home doing nothing and thats why you product failed. I'm sure sports bars would have been overtaken by Quibi bars. Weekends drinking with the boys would be spent at tables all watching Quibis.

How does shit like this get 1.3 billion in investments?

The shows don't magically become proper length episodes when the deal expires. Does Netflix even want 5-10 minute shows? We'll see.

I guess they could wind up on YouTube.

The shows are already filmed and produced with little financial risk? Yeah, some streaming service is going to buy all that content, just because it's content.

Quibi seems like a mildly good idea that became a bad idea when someone decided it needed to be the biggest thing around.

Reno 911 is good, but there is some actual worthwhile stuff on the platform (imo anyway). There's was a lot of LGBTQ+ content on it from the start, including Sasha Velour's Nightgowns, which I would recommend to most people, but it was only 8 episodes.

I feel like the main caveat of the app being mobile only is causing restrictions rather than removing them. It could've been big with the generation that actually likes watching shows and stuff on their phones but that's not a majority, I would assume.

This premise for a show just jumped out at me.

Nicole Richie spreads her message of environmental love through her new musical persona, "Nikki Fre$h," a trap music artist who makes eco-conscious choices while dropping sick beats and performing in over the top music videos. All episodes streaming now.

It wasn't organic enough to appeal to the youtube/instagram/tik tok crowd, and it wasn't hard core enough to appeal to people that would watch 4k Netflix content on their TV's.

1. No one is going to pay for short form, when all people want to do "on their commute" or "on the toilet" to fill time is just search YouTube or scroll thru feeds.

2. If it was porn, it would be super popular.

Despite the star studded commercials, nobody gave a shit. Nice to see. I was getting tired of those ads.

Imagine blaming the failure of your dumb platform on a global event that has increased people's media consumption.

Quibi is stupid as hell and I 100% believe it would have failed regardless, but it's tough to deny that this is true:

The service, which offers entertainment and news programs in five- to 10-minute chunks, was designed to be watched on the go by people who are too busy to sit down and stream TV shows or movies. It came out when millions of people were not going anywhere because of stay-at-home orders across the country.

That's some shit, man.

There is a world in which this service could have possibly have worked for commuters.

I agree with this. I signed up for the Quibi trial because the idea was fairly sound - especially for people like my wife who routinely pick up their phone, scroll Instagram for 15 minutes, and put it down. The idea of filling that time with something better, quality wise, isn't necessarily a bad one.

The issues with Quibi are two-fold. First, the quality bar started low and fell through the damn floor within weeks. To start with I thought concepts like Murder House Flip were meant to be ironic and funny, but as time has worn on, I've realised they're actually serious about this sort of slate of programming.

Second is the pandemic. Katzenberg might be an asshole, but he's right that launching a streaming app designed for commuters at a time when nobody's commuting was a major contributor to its failure.
