For those that were in the "trying to buy a PS5/next gen GPU" game this year, how did it go?

Got a 3080 FE randomly at night a week or so after launch, a few series Xs and 6 PS5s my friends were super happy because they were not at enough to preorder. The majority of the ps5s were from preorders when there was at least a window I was able to grab them. The other two I've gotten since then haven't been as easy.

I got a PS5, but the next-gen GPU thing was a no-go because I still have an outdated motherboard.

I think it's safer for me just to wait until I can afford a whole PC that has a next-gen. GPU.

PC gaming is awesome, and I love my PS5. I also want a Series console at some point too.

Got a ps5 yesterday somehow . Haven't actually tried too hard for the gpu yet cuz my 2080ti can still run through pretty much everything at 1440p besides Cyberpunk

When the first pre-orders went live, I scored one from Best Buy. Unfortunately the unit was stolen at UPS on launch day. With no help from the vendor getting me another I just took the refund. Eventually was lucky to order one from Sony Direct in early December. This time FedEx delivered to my door. System has been pretty much problem free.

I wanted the 3080 FE specifically, it and the XC3 are the only gpus that would work for my case setup. I got a 3080 FE from NVIDIA's website ~6 days post release coasting in the era discord and just happening to click a cart link posted in chat, after alt tabbing back in on a whim from a youtube video, Tekken, or whatever. I had the channel muted at the time, it was a miracle.

I spent almost 5 weeks following 8+discords constantly trying to get ANY 5000 cpu (from Amazon specifically, gift cards and whatnot) with the goal of it being a 5950x. And I fucking tried EVERY time, them shits would disappear instantly! Finally got a 5600x. Its been a great guinea pig cpu to get to terms with DDR4 micron rev b overclocking, PBO2+curve optimizer, and games bench-marking. Finally got to assemble my new pc and use my coupons from the FE promotion too. After playing around with it, I think a curve optimized 5900x will be the sweetspot for what my L12s cooler can actually handle. I'll get around buying one eventually.

EDIT: oh, another rarity was my itx PSU, a corsair SF750. I had to import that mf from germany. Meanwhile, this is what happened the last time they went in stock on corsairs us website when I incidentally got a discord alert. 2020 is nucking futs dude.

Got myself a PS5 DE at launch from the Amazon pre-order links that were going around that directly added it to cart. If not for that, I likely wouldn't have gotten one for a while.

Got a PS5 from Sony on launch day and haven't used it for much other than some PS4 games like Ghost of Tsushima, which was quite impressive. Got a Series X today after trying to track one down since preorders first went live and played a 4K version of SSX 3.

At some point I will play some exclusives and games that really push the systems, but it will be a while before those games come out. Enjoying my time regardless.

No dice on a PS5 - I want one, but also acknowledge internally there's not a ton of reason for me to get one right now (it's basically just Miles Morales, which I refuse to play on PS4).

Got 2 PS5's (sold one to a friend for MSRP). Still searching for a GPU, preferably a 6800XT. I gave up the fight for a Ryzen 5900X and bought an i9-10850K instead. Weird that Intel is sort of the value option right now.

Effortlessly got a PS5 because Sony's own queue was broken and could be skipped.
Sold it to a friend for profit when they were talking about buying from a scalper. I don't have a Playstation 4 library, so I don't mind buying later when more games are out.

Was trying to buy a 3080 too. Gave up on putting any effort in after 2 weeks. Had an opportunity to buy a 3070 from the EVGA queue, but it was poor timing. I'm in queue for other models and will hopefully be up again around the end of January.

I've lucked out a lot this year. I was able to get myself a Series X, PS5 and 3080 all at retail. I was even able to get several PS5s and Series Xs for friends at retail. I got both my Series X and PS5 during the preorder run (from Walmart), and even got an extra of each for friends (from Amazon). Then I was able to get like 2-3 of each during launch from Costco, PS Direct, Amazon and Target. I even had one Series X stolen at delivery (delivered super early and went to the wrong apt smh) but was able to get a refund from Walmart and luckily snagged a replacement at Target the next night.

I just stayed on top of things like crazy, joined a couple of discords and followed some Twitter accounts (with notifications on) and I was able to get it done. People think you need a bot to get as many as I did but all it takes is preparation and consistency. It really sucks its this way now though, which is why I helped as many people as I could. I think being a sneaker fan kind of gave me a leg up on what I needed to do to obtain everything at retail. This is like an every other week thing in the sneaker community.

But damn it that 3080 was the absolute hardest to obtain. It was sheer luck as I had multiple orders cancelled from various sites which made the L hurt even more. Somehow I finally got one to lock in at Amazon and I still can't believe it. I honestly was stressed trying to get that thing and will probably avoid buying GPUs at launch now because of it lol.

Only in the PS5 game at the moment...holding out for a 3080 TI announcement before I start my new build...and hopefully the Ryzen I want will be more readily available.

PS5 went swimmingly though. I took a shot around midnight on launch and was unsuccessful at ordering....but at 2 am right before I actually went to bed I tried again and boom. Got one. It's been great....Miles Morales, Spider-Man Remastered, Demon's Souls, been playing Days Gone for the last few days and I got Ghost of Tsushima....livin' that 60fps console life. It's fantastic, and helped delay my PC upgrade desires.

I pre-ordered a series X and found myself strangely unhyped about the system. I had it for a few days and wasn't really blown away. I was hanging out on Twitter the week of release or just after (I forget which) and saw a post about Sony's queue. I popped into it, not thinking I would actually be able to order the system, and was pleasantly surprised when given the opportunity to order one. I ordered one and got it the next day. I think I've bought about a dozen games since I got the system (mostly PS4 titles). I already had a sizable PS4 collection to enjoy again.

I ended up trading the series X to my brother for some PC parts. I tried to get a new 3xxx series GPU, but those have been impossible to find and I'm not all that disappointed honestly. The PS5 has been great, and my PC is perfectly fine without a new GPU.

Was able to get a PS5 via Walmart preorder the first time they were available. Technically also got a Series X preorder with Amazon, but cancelled it.

Would like to get a 3070 but I'm not trying very hard.

I didn't preorder the ps5 and série x because i wanted a 3080. When the 3080 was there, i could preorder on a website but still could'nt get it now ( perhaps i m going to get it on this 30 décember ).
Since i could'nt get the 3080, i tried to get the ps5 and get 2 ( sold one to my Friend at retail ) and also got the série x ( both console i tried on launch day in France and i got them...i think i was lucky )

Well I just managed to slip in a 3070 order on Amazon tonight after some relatively casual hunting the past couple weeks, so pretty good. Hopping into a stock alert Discord surprisingly paid off.

12/15.. Got a Xbox Series X from Walmart which arrived in the following Saturday.

12/17.. Ordered both Xbox Series S and PS5 from Walmart. Series S got delivered before Xmas on 12/23. PS5 NEVER shipped....

Today on 12/29.. managed to get a PS5 from my local Target at early 2 am and was able to pick it up later in the morning! Then cancelled my Walmart order.

Also ordered a Switch Mario Kart bundle on Amazon at the perfect time... decided to see if there's any in stock, came across the bundle right after it got posted. Went for it, and within the hour, already sold off by scalpers for $400-$500... shocked that I came in the perfect time.

I basically "won" everything I want to buy al all set for the next few years!

I actually got my hands on a 3070 FE off of Best Buy. I thought their system worked really well but it seems like I got lucky cuz it gave a lot of people issues. I'm pretty much done with my PC build (R5 3600, decent speed NVME SSD, 16 GB RAM). Now just waiting on that tax return to get a Benq EX 2780Q monitor. Crazy year but I got lucky all things considered.

I had a PS5 pre ordered in march when shopto UK put it up for pre registration.
Come the official pre order day I hadn't heard anything off them and thought and thought I'd lost out, especially when I couldn't load up the Amazon link on my phone. I decided to try running chrome in desktop mode and secured my order. About an hour later Shopto emailed me asking if I wanted to keep my order. I cancelled it and got my PS5 day 1 in UK.

My brothers keep hassling me now to try and find them PS5 stock lol. A good chunk of the child's classmates are also trying to get hold of the damned thing.

PS5, 5900X and APM were easy-going. 3080 was a bit stressful but I eventually managed to score a FE (sold to fellow era member) and Strix at MSRP within the first weeks after launch.

I hope supply chains can catch up next year, I felt pretty dumb worrying about being able to be consumer electronics.

I was on the EVGA notification list since September 16th so I got lucky and just waited for my turn to buy an RTX 3080 FTW3 Ultra.

As for my PS5 and Series X, I need to give thanks to Wario64's Twitter, I got a notification for both once the initial pre-orders became available, the PS5 from Amazon, and the Series X directly from Microsoft.

I don't think I ever spent as much money in regards to gaming in 2020 then any other year prior, October and November alone were notable in getting an LG CX 55' and my new GPU and the consoles.
