FitnessERA! I need your help! =( So I've struggled with being obese my whole life. Fast forward to 2015 and I gained back quite a bit of the weight I had lost. A brutal breakup with my ex and other things lead me to put on the weight. Here is my progress from Jan 2016 to Aug 2018.. Now I know I can't do anything about the extra skin around my stomach area, which is why I'll have to look into surgery... but can I get some advice with trying to shrink my tree trunk thighs? My legs are literally the one area I am struggling with.

How can I strengthen my grip for deadlifts? I was rolling out both in mixed and double overhand at 110kg and I only did 3x3... My grip has always been weak even before lifting, but this is a bit embarrassing.

Any kind of farmer walks with heavy weights and thick handles; doing deadlifts and cleans with axle barbells, doing pull ups/chin ups from a thick bar, static holds of deadlifts and hanging from a bar with a single hand (trying to extend the hold gradually), pull ups and chin ups with a pair of towels... Grip strenght is mostly enhanced through repetitive manual task, which explains why sailors, mechanics using spanners and climbers usually have great grip strenght/bodyweight ratios.

Thinking of getting one of those rowing machines, they train legs, lower back/belly and arms right? Normally cycle (ATB)/spin and while fun it feels like I'm not working out sometimes (cause it's always only legs).

Did some front squats today. actually stretched to warm up the body. with all things considered i think it went well. learn that i still have so much to work on. but i can feel my upper body strength is increasing so that's a plus.

I subscribe to a gym fails channel that is basically just that, it drives me crazy but i can't turn away from it. The worst is when people attach straps and shit to their heads and start pulling weight with it.

That and quarter squats/quarter leg presses. Makes me want to scream.

Question for my peeps here. After how many days off from the gym do you start to "feel it" and "feel soft"?

For me, it is usually around the 7-10 day mark. Especially if my diet is super loose. Things just don't feel as full, no one can tell the difference but I sure can see and feel it.

10 days and I start to feel like everything is falling apart.

Gym newbie here, looking for an app or some kind of worksheet that lays out a workout routine, would like to input my weights and reps. Helps me to see my improvements.

Blech. Strained my upper back yesterday. Didn't feel anything when lifting but I knew I was pretty tired so I'm guessing my form was off.

Coffee helps but its more mental. Pre workout feels like your veins are opening up while coffee feels like you're powering through

I'm really tempted to get two pairs of shoes. One for running and one for lifting. Running in the Nano's isn't working out as nicely as I thought. Work great for lifts though so I don't want to retire them. Are there any hybrid shoes that are great for both?

Somewhat related to Darkmaigle's question, but after a number of failed starts, I finally hit week three in my calisthenic fitness plan (BYOG). First two weeks were pretty manageable, and I feel better despite only dropping a kilo, but man, am I always sore.

A typical week is four workouts, two days on, one day off, two days on and then the weekend. Is a life of being fit / active just accepting that you're always going to be sore?

An increased training frequency is supposed to reduce DOMS. I don't really get DOMS anymore after talking a few LeGree (Megaformer) classes and being in the worst muscle pain of my life, so maybe it has some merit.

The severity and length of your pain should reduce over time, I should say.

Yes as long as the soreness is not preventing you from doing the full range of motion. If anything, I find that lifting helps reduce the soreness and make it go away more quickly, although that may just be in my head.

Thanks, just the slight bit of motivation I needed to hit the patio and lift. Definitely sore but nothing that hindered strength or the motion.

Other may disagree, but I think cutting through exercise is a fool's game that will lead to nothing but misery unless you just love running in place on a treadmill. If you're not already doing that, you probably don't. Best to clean up your diet to meet any kind of body fat % goals. Any and all cardio should be done purely for enjoyment if you ask me.

I'm a huge fan of the stairmaster. Stationary bike and elliptical are good too. I throw in some treadmill on highest incline and walk as well (you can jog/run if you prefer).

Would recommend throwing some exercises with resistance bands: https://www.self.com/gallery/resistance-band-butt-workout-you-can-do-anywhere

Obviously you don't need to do all in one day but it's up to you how you want to combine/split them.

PS: if you haven't done stairmaster before, you might feel like you're going to die the first bunch of times. Just keep increasing time/speed and before you know it you'll be set.

With shortish rest periods, around a minute to minute and half.

There are quite a few solid bodyweight routines out there. Hell, even just throwing in a few sets of push ups and pullups is enough to stave off the decline.

My experience:

Nano 6: 1.5 years of use, very flexible shoe, not as stiff for weightlifting as the Nano 8 but better versatility. Is better for running but not as goos as a dedicated shoe.

Nano 8: ~7 months of use, more stiff than the 6, more sturdy also and the sole is more firm, so is better for wl; is also more comfy but for running the 6 is better.

Adipower: got them ~10 months ago but barely touch them; they are weighlifting focused, an specialist tool, with a extremely sturdy and firm sole, but useless for everything outside snatches, cleans and squats. They are excellent for the task, but with a narrow sole and ultra stiff heel, shouldn't be used outside static liftings.

I also have a running Adidas shoe (don't known the reference) which endured well the last two years (good for running but not for lifting: the heel is too soft and shrinks under heavy lifts. My only advise about running shoes would be to not go for the ones with a foam cushion because they wear off very fast (I'm not an specialist, maybe that is what they should do, but a shoe that wears off in 4-5 moths seems to me a bad trade if I can get a metcon hybrid one which last a year and half...).

Yeah, I got the Nano 8's thinking they would be a good all around shoe and really regret it. Well...my knees regret it more than I do. I ran in Saucony A4's for years. They're light as all get out and don't have too much cushion. Just enough to make me feel like I'm not slamming down. Thank you so much for taking the time out to give a really thorough response.
