Another question. Seems like when you can level up classes and when you mad them out, you get an ability. Anywhere to see what this ability will be? I figured it would be under skill experience bonus but it doesn't seem to be. And what is the skill experience bonus anyway?
AFAICT, there's no way to check the class "ability" ingame.

And not sure what your skill XP bonus is about, but that may be the statues thing.

Wow, something pretty surprising just happened

So Claude one-shotted Ashe's punkass in Verdant Wind, and I got to option to persuade or kill him. After all my playthroughs, I never saw an option like this before. Crazy.

That happens if you recruited Ashe in Part 1. It also happens for Lorenz in the next chapter, if you're playing Azure Moon or Silver Snow.

Goddamn.

I'm hardly the most skillful RPG player in the world or anything but there's been a nice little upbeat jig in my step ever since I got through Cindered Shadows on Hard without much difficulty. I thought for sure nothing in the main game could be more than a trifle afterward, especially stuff I've done twice already in past playthroughs. I was sorely mistaken. I'm on Caspar and Mercedes' paralogue but I haven't touched either of them combat-wise so their levels are atrocious. I've tried twice now and I literally cannot seem to keep them alive long enough before enough units are up there to pick up the slack. I can just barely get Claude and Shamir there before I'm fucked and I use a nigh-suicidal (though overpowered to the point of staying alive) Byleth to kite most of the foes who would otherwise run up the hill to kill Caspar and Mercedes. But a reinforcement wave shows up right next to them on the same turn that Claude arrives to the scene. No matter how I position Claude (and an on-the-sidelines Shamir who shows up immediately thereafter) those reinforcements want my weakling units for breakfast. (32 x 2 damage with 80%+ hit rate.)

Gonna try something else now -- maybe if I have Caspar and Mercedes move south toward the cliff and hang out at the ledge fewer enemy units will immediately chase them. Only one way to find out! I'm not reducing the difficulty to Normal since that messes up the rest of the game but I'm bound and determined to win this. Easily the toughest thing I've faced in this game. Tougher than that fourth fight in Cindered Shadows! Way tougher, in fact.

Goddess above, if I were playing on Maddening I can't even fathom what magnitude of despair I'd be experiencing right now.

Okay, yep, for whatever reason positioning Caspar and Mercedes at the edge of the cliff overlooking the ruins works like a charm. Only a single enemy came looking for them this time and since they were a mage even my low-leveled Caspar could handle it.

That was a totally unexpected rush!

IIRC you have a few turns before they get aggroed as long as you don't use them (just use the "wait" command on them).

Been stuck on it for a few weeks, though I haven't played in a while. It's definitely BS.

On my last attempt I cleared the whole map, plugged the entrances to the throne room, surrounded Edelgard, got her first HP bar down, then Byleth died to a fucking critical.

Without the weapon triangle, I'm kinda confused on what makes weapons better than others. Like why use a lance over a sword ect?

Also I'm guessing the battle that doesn't cost any activity points on free days is just for grinding? Looks like you can do it over and over.

Definitely agree that Maddening Blue Lion's final map is a bit bogus, especially the obnoxious reinforcement traps towards the end. It's pretty neat how you can use Manuela's personal skill to selectively negate criticals from the boss against units that can't tank a hit, but if you didn't recruit or train her there's just too much RNG present every single turn to make for a fun map.

Even so, I think I probably still prefer it to the eleventh hour weirdness of Golden Deer's final map.

Without the weapon triangle, I'm kinda confused on what makes weapons better than others. Like why use a lance over a sword ect?

Mostly you pick which weapon to use based on which classes you're trying to funnel your characters into. So like, future wyvern riders should be using axes, and pretty much anyone who's gonna be riding a horse should train in lances.

But also there are some slight differences. Axes hit hard but are inaccurate and harder to double with, swords are weaker but more accurate and easier to double with, and lances are in the middle and have access to some of the better Combat Arts.

Also also bows are extremely useful for poking, counterattacking from range, and setting up Linked Attacks. So basically any non-mage should consider carrying a bow as a sidearm, even if you're planning to put them in a melee-focused class.

that's rough, but i can totally see how that happened, the crits are ridiculous. there's too much rng to be able to get away from everything. and wow, i can't imagine taking the time to clear the whole map

everyone died, but i got it on my second try

it came down to dimitri needing to double strike for the exact hp amount with only a 60% chance to hit. i was sure one was going to miss and i was going to have to start the whole map over lol, so glad that didn't happen

Lances have 1-2 ranged weapons that don't suck (unless you're a magic user in which case they're great but most characters that start with an affinity for swords don't have a great magic base or growth). Not that it matters; bows are the best weapon in the game.

You can't continually grind on the higher difficulties, if I recall; that's exclusive to Normal difficulty or lower.

My initial response was "what drama?", but I kept reading. :P

Probably needless to say, I agree with your argument, with the exception that Mekkah's Plinkett/Cinema Sins-style series was actually very even-handed at all, because the premise itself seriously contradicts that (but you probably needed to include that disclaimer lest a horde of youtube comment fanboys descend).

I haven't seen this video series you two are mentioning but "Cinema Sins/Mr. Plinkett bad faith nitpicking, but for Fire Emblem" sounds absolutely insufferable by concept alone.

I'm playing through this game for the first time on the Blue Lions route. I'm enjoying it thus far, but there's one thing that's really bothering me.

I have auto-advance enabled for cutscenes, but whenever someone says a short sentence the conversation pauses for like two seconds before moving on to the next line. Is there no way to get rid of this? It completely ruins the flow of conversations and forces me to pay attention to sentence length to manually advance whenever it happens, which completely defeats the point.

I know this is little LTTP, but I find Hapi a bit more realist than all the characters in the game, excluding Claude.

I snapped a clip of it and thought I'd find it an interesting take, I mean it's not a big far-fetched or anything.

Hapi's nice but her gimmick is a bit too gimmicky for my tastes (at least it's not overused ...)

I was apprehensive about the game for the longest time but I found a new copy for 20 euro in a sale basket and thought it would be silly to pass this on.

And spent 7 hrs with it today. I don't have this with many games but Three Houses is really loooooovely. Just a real pity about no options for male male romance. Is it imperative for gameplay boost to have a lover or can I protest and not have one at all??

Options for male lovers are more restricted, but they are there. There kinda sorta is an option to not marry at all.

Marriage in 3H just effects the ending Byleth receives, and an additional scene with your spouse. It doesn't affect gameplay; you won't be missing out on a child unit like in Fates. There is an option to marry no one.

I'm not sure if you're under the impression there are literally no male-male options, or just commenting on the quality of them, but just to be sure, the male-male romantic pairings for the main character are:

Linhardt (base game, Black Eagles, recruitable in any route)
Jeritza (free update, Crimson Flower route only)
Yuri (paid DLC character, recruitable in any route)

There really aren't 'lovers' outside of ending credit slides. It's not as if you're dating someone throughout the game, in practice. Very back-loaded.

That said, there's a few male/male options for the avatar, as well as various male/male paired endings for other characters which can be easily read as gay (but unfortunately are somewhat ambiguous).

If you want to know which units are same-sex options for a male Byleth, they're:

Linhardt
Yuri (a Cindered Shadows DLC character)
Jeritza (Edelgard's route Part 2 spoilers)

I personally find Yuri to be the best of them. He's a fun character.

I am not sure if I can afford the DLC anytime soon and I am currently with Golden Deers so I am limited to Linhardt which is not a choice. You don't have a choice of one character for heterosexual relationships or the lesbian ones. It's *bit* poor.

If I don't need to marry then I will just skip that since I am more into the battles anyway. It's no Tactics Ogre but it's a really fun casual tactics game with nice Persona like element to it.

No question there. There was a lot of backlash over lack of male same-sex options after release. The two other options besides Linhardt were post-release, too, so the situation was somehow even worse before.

At the very least, all the characters with suggestive same-sex endings should have also been options for male Byleth. Caspar, Felix, Sylvain, Ferdinand, Hubert...

Most guides I can think of are hyper focused on maximizing for Maddening difficulty. Honestly, if you're playing on any difficulty less than that, you'll be fine winging it. The game is very forgiving and flexible in terms of training. There are not any real dead end.

The only pitfall worth warning about is Do NOT make Flayn your Dancer

Other than that, there isn't anything to really worry about. As long as you play into each student's strengths, you'll be set, and they're not shy about suggesting what topics they'd like to focus on. Pursuing Hidden Talents is optional and mostly geared towards those who know they want to pursue alternative builds, so if you're feeling unsure I'd just stick to their strengths. The only one I would recommend pursuing is Dorothea's Faith skill, since it turns a negative into a positive, she makes for a good backup healer and it gives her the option of becoming a Gremory. Just tutor her directly for three weeks at max motivation and it should work.

Authority isn't necessary for class change, but it does determine which battalions you can use. C rank is a good sweet spot to shoot for, as most C battalions are good.

Edelgard's route is a little shorter and the final few maps have a lot of rough terrain that makes it hard for horses to move through, so don't feel you need to get everyone to the mounted Master Classes when Advanced infantry classes will do just fine. So don't sweat it having Hubert as a Warlock or Dark Bishop instead of training lances and horses just to make him a Dark Knight.

The only other thing to know ahead of time is that Byleth automatically gets a Sword/White Magic class after chapter 10, and Edelgard gets a free Armor/Axe class after chapter 15. You don't need to study anything specific, you just get them. If you want a recommendation though, I'd say train Edelgard towards Wyvern Lord (Axe A, Lance C, Flying A).

Use the Explore option at least once per month to have dinner/give gifts to students to keep their motivation, and talk to Edelgard too if you want to go her route.

Hey guys, I picked up Three houses last week and have been enjoying it so far. It's actually my first Fire Emblem game but despite that fact I have decided to play on Hard+Classic because I love a challenge.

Anyways I have been doing pretty well so far but I just got completely bummed out by the fact that I missed my second Dark Seal...
I have no idea how I was supposed to get the first but I was all set to get the second one. Gathered all my strong units outside the door of the room with the Death Knight and then I did something that resulted in something I feel that I could not have foreseen... I started killing the normal units with ranged attacks because I wanted to gang up on the Death Knight but as soon as I killed the last regular enemy the Mission came to an abrupt halt.

It really caught me offguard and it kind of pissed me off because I really don't want to play the mission again.

So how fucked am I? How important are these dark seals and how many more chances do I get? I'm playing Black Eagles if that matters.

TLDR: missed a second dark seal, how fucked am I?

Not fucked in the slightest. If you've already gotten one, then you can just grab the third. The only Black Eagle that really benefits is Hubert, and two is the max that he'd use anyways. If you take a certain branch before the time skip, it matters even less.

Dark Seals aren't at all important -- don't worry. They're actually a pretty underwhelming reward for the effort involved in defeating the Death Knight, because the classes they change you into just aren't very good. You'll still have more opportunities to acquire them, regardless.

That said, the objective of that mission was "Rout all non-boss units or defeat the Death Knight." :P
