I mean, if you're going to make a tasteless joke at least make it funny.
is this confirmed? It will be rebuild (one eay or the other), but its such a shame that some idiot accidentally set the thing on fire.
100% agreedAnyone making shitty jokes should be perma banned.
If you can't expect them to take Notre Dame burning with an ounce of seriousness, what hope do these people have for our community?
Seems it was an accident during the restoration process,
What is wrong with you? This feels like a good reminder that everything burns in the end.
To note - Notre-Dame was sacked and half-ruined in the French Revolution, and that was after decades of neglect. It wasn't until the 19th century that it was restored, rebuilt, and made into the icon it became.
Hugo fixated on architecture as the great book of human history. And tragedies like this are part of that history. Things will be lost, the building will never be the same, but, god willing, something equally beautiful can rise from the ashes.
The point I was trying to make was that time is finite, and if you wanna be somewhere or do something, do it now. I'm not saying we shouldn't care about this. Jesus Christ, relax. People are more upset here than they have been in situations where countless people actually died.
Not being nihilistic. I'm glad no one was hurt, but when it comes to buildings, nothing stands forever. ISIS destroyed thousands of Notre Dames in just the last decade throughout the middle east. I think it's best if people had perspective on things like this. It's all going to burn someday, so if you were meaning to go somewhere one day or see something, have that in mind.
Another poster mentioned that it may have a stone roof and the wooden "roof" is just an ornament of sorts. If so, the interior could still be safe. I really really really hope thats the case. This photo gives me hope. No flames at all visible in the main windows
Don't be silly. I haven't and won't make jokes in threads like this but there's nothing wrong with a bit of gallows humour. I love history and this is incredibly sad to see but nobody was hurt. Asking for people to be permanently banned for a joke is over the top.Anyone making shitty jokes should be perma banned.

Makes sense, I am glad that no one got hurt in the end and that they have so far taken it really carefully with this. While it sucks about the building the tragedy is at most some lost (but veeeeery well documented) historical relics, but at least no lives.Yeah, if it was wooden support structures, it probably would have gone quick.
I suspect they were waiting for the roof to go down before they could take an offensive position because of the danger of it collapsing.

Most likely accidental.
it looks like they don't really have the means to fight this fire properly
This feels like a good reminder that everything burns in the end.
"To cheer you up"?So sad. To all the French, don't worry, you will have it restored and beautiful as ever. Everything can be reconstructed in the original style, you have all the photos you need I imagine.
Example to cheer you up:
