The french won't rebuild it. They'll build a new, bold cathedral that will remain at its place for centuries to come.

After today, Notre Dame is effectively gone forever.

Awful. Some poor soul is responsible for this. It's allegedly from a re-roof? Likely doing hot work. Very dangerous. I thought roofers were moving away from this.

It sounds like 16 statues were removed for cleaning prior to the fire so at least some of the art work survived.

Another thing to consider when watching a historic site burn you have to understand these things are built and looked at as something that will stand the test of time and out last even their creators. A constant presence then that was meant to be a constant presence for all future generations. Now its just gone up in flames. You see this sentiment all over ancient stories and texts, immortality gained through architecture.

NBC is reporting that a number of religious statues were actually off site for cleaning and repair and thus are safe. They didn't name which ones, but it was over a dozen.

The relics absolutely existed and were kept somewhere in the building from what I remember from AP European History. I'm not sure if they were stored in the spire or not, I assumed they would be in the vault/basement of the building.

The French have historically been adamant about preserving cultural/historic architecture like this. It's the reason why there's been such strong push back against things like wheelchair ramps and modern infrastructure in certain areas of the city. I see no possible outcome to this that doesn't involve rebuilding the entire cathedral as it was originally designed.

Wow, one of the few pieces of Gothic architechture that managed to stand the test of time is gone. From what the reports were saying, I'd suspect the cause was due to neglecting to follow proper fire watch procedures after welding was completed.

We'll know more about the causes once the workers have been interrogated. But I'm not all that surprised something happened. I have worked for a time in a company who's role is to make sure safety regulations are followed, and I have seen some infuriating things. Like, say, fusibles replaced by metal bits. Far too many people in charge believe they can cut corners with impunity, that accidents only happen to others...

But shit, this is awful. It may take a decade for everything to be restored, with the limited number of qualified renovation experts and stained glass specialists. Not to mention the art pieces and artifacts inside.

Damn. Hate to see a grand piece of history being destroyed like this. I was hoping I'd get to see it in its full glory in person sometime.

I posted one way earlier, but I had NO idea the fire was going to be as destructive as it would be and the gravity of the situation has sunk in fast and hard.

I toured Europe for my honeymoon to see the cathedrals, but wasn't able to see Notre Dame. "Next time," I told my wife.

Watch this end up being because someone took an unauthorized smoke break or some shit like that. The guy won't make it out of a trial alive.

Omg ;_; I'm glad it sounds like no one was hurt but this is making me teary. I LOVE Notre Dame, I was in love with it while I was in Paris and this is so so so sad. I hope it can be saved or rebuilt, this is history. :'(

How is the city not prepared for something like this? I can't believe it.
It may be a silly question but wouldn't Notre Dame be subject to the same fire codes as any other building in Paris?

As a french, I'm feeling so devastated right now... there are no words, I'm about to cry.
I hope they could saved relics that were inside atleast....

I think the position of the cathedral didn't help one bit. It's practically on a small island crowded amongst other buildings.

This is... numbingly heartbreaking. Notre Dame just feels like a permanent fixture of the world like the Grand Canyon or the Moon, and it being damaged like this is surreal.

That's why there was no electricity under the roof and where the fire begins is difficult to access (no matter what they have planned, it's almost impossible to secure if a big fire starts under the roof)
