1000% agreed. Zoned open world is easily the best way to approach current gen AAA JRPGs in order to have both a sense of scale and content. To me the benefits of everything being seamless is so negligible compared to its costs.

Who cares if you have to load into another area that takes 2 seconds?

I'm glad Yoshida sees it the same way and makes me really optimistic about 16
Yup, FF12/Xenoblade style is the way to go imo. XIII and XV were too far in either direction

You mean him taking a break during the beginning of the year (to then go in full force for spring)?

Maybe, I don't take it as meaning much, but it'd be great if it's March or so!
Nothing confirmed, but it's presumably pulling from FFXIV voice actors. It sounds like Clive is Graha Tia's voice from FFXIV for both JP and English localizations. (Jonathan Bailey/Uchida Yuma). The woman who covers her mouth when meeting Joshua also sounds a lot like Y'shtola's voice actress (Robyn Addison). Also seen people speculate that one of the other voiced men in the trailer sounds like Aymeric's voice actor (Blake Ritson)
Cool guesses all around.

I've seen others also theorize that Graha Tia's actor is Clive's and I could see that, they sound very similar. The differences could be down to the direction/kind of character they're playing.

Since English is the source language this time around and they're actually using full mo-cap with the actors, I'm very interested to see how cutscene direction and acting is like.

EDIT: I also saw some saying that older Clive sounds similar to Joe Dempsey, whom I'm always gladly surprised to remember as appearing in XIV lol.

Most open world exploration is incredibly boring too - as was the case in FFXV. So honestly I don't get the obsession of wandering around mostly empty fields and plains, filled with mostly nothing, doing side quests that are mostly meaningless busy work.

I remember far more locations from FFVII, VIII, IX and X than XV because all the environments were hand crafted, interesting, greatly varied and important to the story.

Honestly most JRPGs would be significantly better without an open world.
For me, I'm yearning for a happy middle ground. Small enough to keep you are kept on track, not by progressing in an obviously straight path or series of corridors, but in a way that allows naturally tight pacing and areas you can't get lost in or seem like a chore to traverse, BUT also large enough give the world some sense of being massive and allow exploration for those wanting to do that.

Thanks for the info!

The guy that says "We cannot defend our realm from the spread of the blight" at 1:44 in the trailer sounds like a famous actor, I just can't put my finger on who it is though.
sounds like Gaius' VA, particularly similar to his voice when he shows up in Chernobyl

something in between TLOU2's wide linear approach and FF12's zones would be lovely. I'd love for the entire world to stream while you're on foot, but - as much as I would also love seamless airship travel by the same method - I do recognize that it has too many negative trade offs elsewhere to be fully worth it.

Nothing new (it's in line with his previous words), but I like how this sounds: "we've finally reached a point where we can crank the gear up in development to work toward releasing the game."
Pls no.

E3 time would be really disappointing tbh. I think it's likely to be May, although it's not much of a difference lol. March might be too soon, and April is a good enough guess, idk.

Things can change. Development isn't a linear thing. Last I heard, Joshua is substantially taller than Clive.

because he's Ifrit haaaaaaaaaaaaaaa I'm here all week.

At this point I would expect the most likely outcome is that S-E will be having their own event to unveil FFXVI when they are ready for it. Just like how they manage PR for FFXIV stuff. It makes more sense than trying to plan around the schedules of other existing events.

is the nvidia event considered spring 2022?
chances of ff16 being shown there?

FF16 is, as far as Sony wants the world to know, PS5 exclusive. It won't show up anywhere that isn't a Sony thing or an E3, TGA style multiplatform trailer showcase thing.

Gonna be pure PS5 (or *PC footage simulating PS5 visuals) until a year or so after release (and then another year on Epic if Sony let SE release on PC and don't add more exclusivity with a DLC deal)

Definitely will be marketed as Sony/PS5 only - it will probably get its own event rather than a Sony State of Play - Uncovered: Final Fantasy XV was March 31st 2016 so around then makes sense for a Final Fantasy XVI launch event with the game and whatever surrounding media has been prepared

Sorry for the double post. Takahashi artwork for the New Year. She looks a bit like Jill ...

Yeah, she does. Maybe it's from another game, or just a random bit of artwork, but she does have similarities to Jill.

Sadly, they're not going to reveal a design like Jill's this way. This character looks like she has a maid motif going, and the ice stuff is likely due to it being winter.

Amusing similarities, in any case, and a fantastic piece. Takahashi is really talented and I can't wait to see how adult Jill actually looks like.

It only makes sense that Jill would be the dominant of Shiva, given where she comes from, the reason she lives with the Rosfield family, etc. But it creates a very interesting scenario for that opening trailer.

I still think there's no way he'd reveal or tease something like that in his personal Twitter account, especially when we didn't even get anything with Yoshida's comment. Takahashi posts original (to my knowledge) characters all the time.

I wonder how they'll market adult Jill. If she's Shiva's Dominant, will they reveal that? Judging by Clive's attire and potential lack of freedom, that mission is probably early on in the game.

Can't be her, eye color is different

Definitely looks inspired tho
Jill has blue eyes. The girl in the new art has brighter blue eyes. It's not a stretch to think it might be Jill post-time skip when she's well into her Dominant years. New girls' eyes have a color of blue that looks like they are glowing. Joshua's eyes glow red when he's about to transform/call upon Phoenix. Again, not a stretch...

She also has a brand/emblem on her hand that looks in a similar style to the brands/tattoos in FFXVI.

I'm still trying to figure this out, too. The mission with the party of four in the beginning of the trailer appears to be post-timeskip. If it's an Episode 0 type of thing where this is how we do the tutorial, and then something bad happens, fade to black. <insert I bet you're wondering how I got here meme>

Then we could be kicked back into the past where Clive, Joshua, and Jill's relationships are introduced. There's clearly scenes where young Clive is fighting a Malboro, and then the dragoon inside a Rosaria stronghold (you can tell by the banners that hang on the wall). The implication that Sanbreque is planning to invade Rosaria -- all that is before the timeskip. I can't imagine that, chronologically, the mission for Shiva's dominant is at all early in Clive's story. But we could see it earlier if that's the route the game goes.

I've suspected that Shiva's dominant is indeed Jill, and that Clive's fortunes place him on a trail to meet with her, rescue her, and that the two of them set out to avenge Joshua (potentially with others helping). Though it could be the exact opposite, and Clive and Jill end up against each other.

Jill's eyes look grey to me but then again I didn't check hi-res pics or vids or I'll take your word for it.

Nah, it's possible IMO. It's not like it's a huge reveal... Technically it isn't even a reveal at all, the character was already announced.

I've also been thinking of an in media res beginning. It gets people wondering how things got there, which is cool if well done.

In any case, when I say early in Clive's story, I mean in his adult life. I think 15-year-old Clive's portion will be just a prologue (maybe a Midgar-sized one?) and that, after abandoning/escaping the Dominant-killing order, his actual "journey" where he finally dons the red armour starts. Obviously, massive headcanon here lmao.

And yeah, Jill's also a princess from the Northern Territories per that deleted tweet, so maybe it's like in Rosaria where the Archiduke inherits an Eikon. Waloed's king is also a Dominant, although I could see him being a brand-new king who recently got in power through force, idk.

Oh, I don't think it's impossible. I'm actually leaning towards them showing her, considering she's a main character.

The one I can see them not even hinting at post-timeskip is Joshua. They might keep his fate a surprise so that when he's back as an antagonist to Clive it'll be more exciting :B

Jill's eyes seem to be a light pale blue. The girl in the tweeted artwork has a more saturated color blue, but I still stand with the whole glowing eye thing (Joshua's did as well). Watching the trailer over again, I also noticed another similarity. In the artwork, the girl's fingernails show through her gloves (glowing?) and Shiva (in the Awakening trailer) has glowing fingernails.

And yeah, I wouldn't chalk this down as being part of a huge reveal, but a nice little free sample for those waiting for that reveal. A little nod of "things to come" and what to expect in this new year.

Now that I think about it, maybe there's a thing with fingernails in FFXVI. Some people have theorized that the cigarette-smoking woman is Titan's dominant because her fingernails are noticeably yellow/orange.

I think she's Titan's dominant if only because Titan's dominant is supposed to be a high-ranking political adviser for the Dhalmeks. And she sure fits the bill.

She's a strange throwback to Rydia, too. Kinda has the short hair and youthful look. Or maybe I just see FFIV references wherever I go.
