There's almost nothing they could have done to save him, he's 100% a saturday morning cartoon baddy.
His defining character traits in the original game were pretty much exclusively his laugh and that he never has anything else to offer Shinra except excuses and apologies.

He's still exactly like that now in the remake, just with a whole lot more screen time.

Gameplay is the best it's ever been for a Final Fantasy game. They just need to fine tune a few things for the sequel, but it's amazing nonetheless.

Finding myself missing random encounters a little... maybe just have them respawn after a short time. I really would like more fights in dungeons, with chances of harder enemies appearing.

The main complaint I have with this game is there's not quite enough combat, the combat is a bit too easy on normal overall. I used to love taking time out and spending a few hours grinding in a new area to raise materia to try, etc.. so far in c10 I'm missing that quite a lot.

Why is Leslie in the game? I don't see the point. There are enough characters you could have fleshed out.
There's probably gonna be a plot thread about him and Corneo in the latter parts.

I think it's nice to see people besides the party challenge corneo. He pretty much ran Wall Market with no opposition in the OG

Chapter 16 is so freaking perfect.

That Ancients cutscene... Meteor... Sephiroth... that was one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. I'm fucking shook.

Just finished the game. The ending is a visual marvel and there's some crazy setpieces and boss battles, but it soured me on the experience sadly. I enjoyed the remake, the battle system is great, the music is probably my favorite soundtrack ever going far above the original, and I liked the flow and even most of the additions storywise (the dementors and their whole deal not withstanding), but at the end I feel this is a game without purpose or theming. I was 100% on board with a Midgar only FFVII with tons of reworked plot elements and additions, but this feels like throwing a ton of mud to a clean surface. I don't understand what they were attempting to do, and honestly, I don't think they were aware either.

And that's a wrap.

I'll post my thoughts on the ending in the spoiler thread of course, but hoooooo boy. As for the rest of the package, this really was everything I wanted and then some. The characters, the music, the battle system - all handled so goddamn well. There are certainly some rough areas, such as the background textures and medicore side content, but that wasn't nearly enough to ruin the game for me.

Is there any way to delete specific saves? Seems the game stupidly groups all in a big chunk in the OS, and I can't seem to find a Delete option in the ingame menus.

Really enjoying this so far, but I'm only on chapter six and the level design is far more linear than I was expecting... far more. Really wish SE had just straight up ripped off the way Yakuza uses "hub" areas full of stuff to do for this.

Also some of the textures look rough... the doors on the apartment building in particular. It's hardly a major issue, but it sticks out when the rest of the game looks so fantastic.

Also couldn't help but look back and laugh about all the hysterics assholes went into about Tifa getting a "boob reduction" for the remake when you keep seeing:

... ... ... 😐

I just can't even...
Did the developers not understand the original game's tone and atmosphere or was this a design decision for a different reason?

I mean the symbolism in the OG game of the rich living on high and literally forcing the dregs of society and the poor to live in filth and shadow was palpable. It was so good. Why change it?
That's interesting, I actually think it's a change for the better. An endless night is silly IMO, the motif of Shinra giving them everything right down to sunlight fits far better for the whole Midgar story/struggle.

But it's shown time and time again Shinra doesn't give a fuck about the people in the slums. They don't provide them clean drinking water or protection from roving bands of monsters getting into the lower city. I hear there's even crazy houses from hell that eat people down there that Shinra has turned a blind eye to...

For sure but I think that's the point. 'You'll take what we give you' even when what they're giving is paltry. I mean, there's a reason people still live there in the world rather than outside the gates.

The slums are more realistic and alive in the remake, instead of the overly cartoonish approach in the original (understandable obviously, Midgar wasn't as big a section and there were limitations back then).

And giving them a fake sun is mostly a populist action to keep them from revolting.

They hired Reeve and have a public relations department, though. It's actually a more realistic depiction of an evil corporation/government because they try to win over the general public and lower classes ("Look at all of the services we provide to make your life better!") all the while ignoring the fact they're the entire reason the issues exist in the first place. It's pretty clever.

Also it seems like the push towards the Promised Land is a recent development and Shinra is deliberately moving all funding towards that instead

After finishing I honestly recommend playing the first one before the remake. They are different games.
You can play this and then the original in the mean time between part 1 and 2. This way you have an entirely different experience to most others, which would be refreshing to hear.
Honestly yes, more than any other remake it is enhanced by experience of the original.
Seven hours in and definitely play the original first.

this game feels a lot like fanservice and honestly all the new stuff so far has been... bad and very bloaty.

it feels like a game made for people who just want to live in the world of Midgar, drench themselves in those environments.

the original game isn't flawless but there's a pace to the Midgar portion that is completely absent here and as a result a lot of stuff doesn't hit the same. After all, it was originally only intended to be one fourth of a 40 hour game's story. Likewise, the introducing of story elements way before they were originally written to be feels poorly executed.
If you play the original first..... right now it's gonna look weird. That's all i'm going to say but honestly this game really is for the original fans, imo but it added a ton of new stuff. I feel like if you see that new stuff now it's going to make your original playthrough look weird as well. So my advice is play the remake first. The next part isn't coming in a few years anyway.... digest all of it and play the original to appreciate part 2 later on.
Ahahaha thanks for the diversity of opinions guys. Lots to consider. Still have a few other games to finish up before I get into this, so I got time to think it over. Is the Switch port of the original FF7 solid?

I think part of it is that Reeve is in charge of urban planning and he cares a lot more about the people then the rest of the higher ups. I like the change, the slums are still a complete dump but they throw the people on the bottom a couple bones to give them some illusion they care.

I'm really glad they didn't do something like that. The linear nature of this game is one of its strengths, imo.

Don't get me wrong, I hope they open it up in the next installment. Maybe a similar design to FF14 if they can't go full open world. Here though, I wouldn't have liked hub world theme park design at all.

Those door textures have to be a bug, too, there's no way away they were intended.

Maybe you should play the game.

People on the plate live in normal houses, while people in the slum live in houses that have sheet metal for roofs, and the buildings are frequently built using scraps. Most of the chatter you hear while going through the 7 slums is about people looking for work on top despite the fact that the pay is still lousy. Tifa and Cloud live in a crap apartment, because there are no better houses available. They make a point that Jessie could live in a decent house but instead lives in a small house with a bunch of other women.

Shinra gives them light but they also don't protect sector 7 from the monsters (instead sector 7 has a watch group that you help). Just outside of the houses is a train graveyard that people go to for scraps, but the train graveyard is haunted. Shinra throws people a few bones so they don't revolt, and the people are portrayed as grateful for Shinra, despite the fact that Shinra created their problems in the first place.

When they talk about the Sun Lamps, Tifa mocks a speech President Shinra gave about them and the characters point out that the Sun Lamps are a poor substitute for natural sunlight.

I am up to the Airbuster, and the game's story is incredible.

Midgar, With Love
I think I have come up with perhaps the most pathetic grievance possible about this game (which I love, for the record):

When Tifa briefly imitates President Shinra during a little Chapter 6 banter moment, her voice actress is frankly too good at sounding like someone else, thus slightly diminishing believability factor since Tifa does not appear to have been trained in acting. Perhaps if it were Jessie who did this, it would be excusable, but as it stands this is borderline indefensible.

I love this game I am 100% kidding

The two aspects that I think this game got absolutely perfect are the soundtrack which I did not expect to be this good and the characters. I feel like the characters in particular are exactly how I always imagined them to be and that was probably the main thing I was worried the writers would not be able to capture.

Who's everyone's favourites in this remake?

So when your in the slums with Aerith there is a werehouse blocked off by a gate with what looks like Wutai symbols all over it and a yellow materia on the ground. Can you get that the first time you see that or is that an area you can get to later on? I couldn't find a way in.

I'm in the opposite boat here. The theming and intent is so overtly clear to me that it was very obvious at the end what the game was trying to say, especially about Legacy and the relationship people (especially creators and fans) have with an original work, and that purpose was so strong that it took an almost overbearing front seat by the end.

I honestly could have gone for a little bit more subtlety, haha.

Had a shower thought but instead of trying to shoehorn in a final boss at a point where there wasn't room for it in the original, I wish they greatly expanded upon
Rufus and made him the last major battle. They could have him merge with the Watchers of Fate to give them a voice and to explain to the party that they shouldn't go outside of Midgar to chase down Sephiroth because that's not their destiny or something.

Looking at this game from the perspective of new players, the whole Rufus appearance and highway escape was just weird, and I wish they held off on having Sephiroth as a final boss until a later part.

I think Cloud, Barret and Aerith have all been done incredibly well. Tifa would be perfect if they hadn't given her all these weird perky anime girl mannerisms that are completely at odds with her character. I also love this iteration of Biggs and Wedge (I liked Jessie to start with but they went waaay overboard on the Cloud thing with her). I also think a handful of the new supporting characters are really well done, such as Marle and the Wall Market Trio (Madam M in particular is really good, she's just the right amount of zany that she'd fit right in with some of the more bizarre NPCs in the original but there''s also a realness to her dialogue and performance).

So in love with this game. I played last night up to Chapter 14. I'd barely been sleeping the past several days, moreso than usual, so for my birthday my mom watched my kid so I could sleep in. Would've loved to keep steamrolling though the game but I needed some damn rest.

Every waking moment away from my PlayStation is torture though.

The switch port is great, all bugs have been patched to my knowledge.

i will also add that a lot of story elements/beats in the original are introduced at key points in the original that serve the pacing and impact of the story.

the new version moves up a lot of stuff and weaves it into the narrative where it wasn't before. I don't think the changes are for the better but I do think they are fine if you already know the original story.

I know why they did it, it's because they expanded an 8 hour segment into a 35 hour game and knew that some of the characters in the broader FF7 narrative would barely be touched upon before the game ended if they didn't make the changes, but I still don't think they are good.

the biggest change comes with when a certain villain is first seen or heard of and I think the trade-off completely undermines one of the coolest and most impactful scenes in the original game.

Anyone has a good strategy for a late-game Battle Intel boss? I am getting DECIMATED.

The Leviathan one. I feel like I'm doing microscopic damage to it, especially forcing me to go aerial, and then the nuclear blast pretty much kills off everyone except maybe Barrett.

"Lifesaver" on Barret makes 2 character survive and easily makes all fights more managable, not just this one.
I recommend Big Bertha and 2 HP+ on him as well.
If you use Magnify + Manaward all 3 will easily survive. Only use it when he announces Tidalwave, so always keep 1 ATB for whoever has that equipped.
Save your limit for when you stagger him or he does something on the ground. You don't want to waste them.

Stock up on Ether and the rest is just going through the motions.
