Yes, exactly this. I don't need an open-world if it's not any good. It's hard making a good open-world. Rockstar excels at it. I don't need FFVII to have that, unless it works. Which I doubt.

If it's like TLOU Part II, Grand Pulse, or FFXII's Zones. I'll be ecstatic.
Yep. Original FFVII wasn't open world either. It was a linear game with a world map, which is very very different.

Can anyone confirm the summary of what's changed or added to the base game (if anything)?

Also I still see people arguing the multiverse thing! Really hope this puts a nail in that coffin.

I'm expecting/hoping that R2 takes on the "wide-linear" philosophy like TLOU2 or UC4. I.E.: large zones that one can explore at will and find side objectives, but will always funnel back into a main objective.

On Zack: I'm still thinking it's a separate timeline, that will somehow eventually tie into the main timeline.

Yuffie was as annoying as I thought she would be.

Still not a fan of all that DoC crap. I just sprung to me while watching this, all the Tsviets are like freakin' Naruto rejects. It's just that they ain't dressed like ninjas.

The ending was pretty good though. Love that they kept Kalm perched up on the highlands. Midgar and the wastelands surrounding it are the lowest lands of that area. Once you leave the wastelands, Kalm and the area leading to the Chocobo Farm are elevated higher.

Considering the scene before it I just assume the whole thing is CG. You could say they're covering up the past, but they don't really have any reason to. The whole point of the presentation is "We runnin' out of mako, yo! Let's find more!"
Shinra's not going to say, "We are fuckin' vampires suckin' the life out of those planet!" The Midgar area was fertile prior to Midgar being a thing. Nobody remembers that, though. So yeah, they are going to spread the lie that "it's always been like this", a wasteland outside of Midgar.

True, it did make the game feel that much more epic when you leave Midgar. Or seeing little things in the distance that you want to explore later. Off the beaten path places like the cave with the sleeping man, Gongaga was optional, the cabin where you get Great Gospel.

As much as I love that world map, they just need to capture it's amazing sense of vastness, and mystery, and exploration.

Just to help visualize how FF7 is structured:

This is the world map zoned out with the important areas of the map:

This is the path you take through the world from the start to the first trip to North Cave:

and the rest of the game:

This warms my heart with nostalgia. The critical path never felt so linear when I was so busy breeding chocobos for the materia caves (KotR), visiting Wutai, or Lucrecia's Cave.

All the optional areas are what I'm gonna miss, made the world feel more alive when you were going off the beaten path.

I will watch that new ending on YouTube, no shame lol. I don't have Intergrade or a PS5 to even be able to play it.

Keeping the new content locked to PS5 killed my excitement for it. From what I watched, the ending wasn't even that meaty and didn't add much other than some awesome party interactions.

Didn't Nomura straight up say that the footage he wanted to show off VIIR-2 had cloud running in an open, wooded area or something? I don't remember the exact quote but they also said in the ultimania that one of the reasons they made Midgar it's own game because they knew the rest of the game would have a different structure/design to it or something like that - basically implying that the other games wouldn't be as linear. I'm expecting a semi-open world with large zones, ex. a modern version of what XII did.

Ok wait. For real tho. I will stan Visual Works till the day I die.

But can someone tell me

Why Aerith still looks different in almost every shot? Like it's not just the lighting. In one shot her face looks round, in another it looks angular with smaller eyes, in another it looks angular with big eyes, in another shot her cheekbones look like a weapon, etc.

I don't get it

She looked perfect in the opening when she's running around and a guy bumps into her flower basket

Just stick to that lol

Outside of that, though, Cloud, Tifa, Barret, Red XIII, and Yuffie look perfect

Just please Visual Works can you make a decision on Aerith's face

The rest of the games should be linear, but since the rest of the towns are nowhere near as complex they can make the linear areas between the towns huge to compensate. Like the area between Kalm and the Mithril Mine can be a huge area, the area between the Mithril Mine and Junon can be a huge area. Everything between Costa Del Sol and Gold Saucer is pretty much like a mini Midgar segment. Between Gold Saucer and Nibelheim can be an open area, with Cosmo Canyon being forced via ability gating. And then Nibelheim to Rocket Town should be a linear path.

The only human character that looks consistently good in CG (as in their face doesn't look different in every CG shot and they match their in-game look too) is Barret. Tifa looks fine in CG but I don't feel like her CG model really looks like her in-game model. Cloud looks weird too and his CG is often inconsistent. Aerith is like Cloud but 10x worse. I feel like they try to hard to make her look overly cute and not a real person sometimes.

Midgar, With Love
Open "region" FFXII-style from Kalm to Junon, except Mythril Cave serves as a buffer so it's technically two regions.

Central continent is then multiple FFXII-style regions that weave more or less 180 degrees forward from one to another, with side paths sizable enough to give us a modern feeling of FFX's Calm Lands.

Just a guess.

I really hope they don't start messing with the faces of the game models for part 2 from a design standpoint. General tech improvements sure but design wise I think they are perfect.

Go fully off the rails and give Zack his own party to romp around with. Cissnei and Kunsel for sure. Maybe Dyne and Lucrecia. Palmer. Yuna.
I actually just wrote up this very theory in one of the other threads!

My theory is they're gonna Avengers Endgame it and converge the timelines to have everyone show up for a final fight against Sephiroth.

The voice direction for Zack's new English VA is soooooooooo much better, thank god, and feels closer to Rick Gomez's Zack. I was not a fan of the way Zack's voice direction had been previously. Nice mix of earnest and sincere, but not too over the top -- which is a fine line to walk with Zack's character after Crisis Core, where he sometimes became too much of caricature for my liking after the OG FFVII.

It was fun watching the Midgar crew chatting as they walked (even got another smile out of Cloud), though its a shame Red didn't talk. It'll be great to see how Yuffie fits into the mix in FFVIIR-2. Tifa teaching Aerith the perfect hitchhiking stance was hilarious, still loving their dynamic. It also leads to a new Tifa question: when did she need to learn to hitchhike? Not really needed in Nibelheim or under the plate. tell me your secrets tifa

I still prefer the in-game character models for Aerith/Tifa/Cloud as opposed to the Visual Works pre-rendered cutscenes (Barret and Red look great in both), but it was really cool seeing the rain beginning to leave wet patches on Aerith's dress. Nice detail.

If Zack's adventures take place in a different universe -- which seemingly they do, as the plate is still there? -- it's good that there are consequences/a ripple effect for Zack living with Aerith not being in the church. Both fascinated and worried to see how Zack will be used going forward, ha. I also agree with the thread consensus: bring back Cissnei! She was the best part of CC.

Is there any footage of the Weiss fight out yet? I want to see if he's a stupid strong, massively overpowered superboss like pretty much most Square-Enix games in the last two decades have had.

All of that can be affected by lighting and camera angles. It's all the same model.

This is my one and only problem with the CG scenes. Every time they make new scenes, the models are different somehow. Wish they could be more consistent

From my understanding, you could preload if you were getting Intergrade without upgrading.

If you're upgrading from PS4 version, you're stuck waiting until midnight.
Oh okay, that's fine. Just was afraid I was stuck in some sort of purgatory where I needed to buy it but couldn't. I don't remember if I got it as part of PS+ or if I bought it only to wait like with TLoU 2.

The whole main branch of Avalanche having less extreme goals than Barret thing is weird considering the original founders of Avalanche wanted to save the planet by eradicating humanity.

Go look at the regular ending CG cutscene for instance

Compare the shot at 19:35 (right after she says "We can" to Cloud)

To the shot immediately afterwards, to when she says "We will."

Her eyes look smaller, her lips/mouth look smaller/thinner, and this might be from the distance but the gap between her nostrils and her lip seems to be larger

That's the same model??

Hopefully that ending with Zack will lay down to rest all shipping talk..

Of course it won't.

Zack still loving Aerith doesn't change the fact that in canon Aerith ends up loving Cloud for Cloud and some fans will always prefer Aerith/Cloud over Aerith/Zack.

Why would him going to see her change that?
