do i play it before the game?

No. It spoils a ton. Just like the other DLC episodes. If you do wish to weave the episodes into the main narrative of the game without having them spoil things for you;

Gladiolus - Chapter 8, after he rejoins your party.
Prompto - Chapter 13, after he rejoins your party.
Ignis - Chaper 14
Ardyn - Chapter 15 (Post Game)

Comrades can be played from Chapter 14 onwards, although I would save it for Post Game. It mostly ties in with Kingsglaive, but also end game stuff.

Feel free to watch Kingslgaive and the Brotherhood anime series before playing the game though - just be careful with bumping into spoilers if you plan on watching it on YouTube. Avoid the Ardyn anime short that ties in with his DLC episode though.

I actually decided to buy and try Episode Ardyn recently, so I hope I have a good time with it! Gatecrashing a city with a big ass summon seems like a hell of a lot of fun!

By the way, is it okay for me to recommend one of the final fantasy mobile Gatcha games here? I don't want to post anything about Opera Omnia if it's out of line to do so, but I think a lot of people are sleeping on it as a legit good Final Fantasy game, with solid writing and a really fun Turn Based battle system.

Don't wanna step on any toes here, but it's legit, and way more playable then most of it's contemporaries.

What is the best way to go about playing Final Fantasy II?
I have the PSP version, but are there any worthwhile romhacks to other versions of the game to try out?
For that matter, say I am playing the PSP version of the game; how should my progression be like so that my experience isn't tedious by grinding for stat ups etc.?

The PSP version is the best for sure.
You shouldn't have to go out of your way to grind at all if you just fight every battle.
Simply surviving difficult fights tends to give huge stat boosts to get you up to par.
I'd also recommend sticking to one weapon type per character for the entire game to take advantage of the weapon skill levels. I usually dual wield with everybody for extra damage.
Offensive magic isn't very useful without a ton of grinding, so I usually ignore it.
You should absolutely make use of buff spells though. A lot of them, like Blink, are very useful even unleveled.

I personally like the PS1 version of the game since I find the PSP remake too glossy, but that's just me.

I am slowly making my way through FFXV royal edition. Currently I am in the post game and I dabbled into the different episodes. I wanted to play some comrades stuff but I am a bit confused. I could enter the expansion from the main game but I can't do anything in there except creating a char. Am I doing something wrong? A quick Google search pointed me to the standalone version but what is the point of keeping that menu point in the main game?

For some reason, there is a mechanic to replace Noctis's model with your Comrades character, and see other folks in the main game traipsing around as well.

You can even leave treasures points on the map, and the longer it takes to find it the better reward you get from someone doing so.

You wanna go into Comerades itself to actually play it, and join that FFXV Discord thats around to play with others by requesting others help you out, the game has Bizarre netcode and requires simultaneous play and doesn't support quickplay, at least last time I checked.

It's fun and different though, I like it. If you join it (/r/FFXV OFFICIAL DISCORD), @ me and I'll see if I can get my stuff working and try playing with you sometime, it feels like a year since I played but I got far : P

Also, I'm usually keeping an eye on the thread, but if anyone needs a Huge Dork's advice on anything, feel free to mention me in a post here.

Of all the games, I'm thinking of going back to FFXII Revenant Wings (DS). I know an RTS on DS was never ideal, but for some reason I loved that game back in the day. It's been so many years now (got it on release). I kinda think it would be a nice, fresh restart after I finish my seventh playthrough of SMTIV. :D

LR is honestly really fun
I'm honestly surprised how much I've been enjoying it so far. Only on the second day so far, but still. It's tons of fun

It's a shame that no one played this, both because of releasing on that generation consoles only after next gen consoles were out, and because of lack of goodwill for ff xiii at that point. They really dropped the ball when they didn't make a ps4 remaster. I thought we'd get one for sure. This has the potential of being viewed as a cult classic some day, if people actually ever give it a chance (assuming it doesn't get a whole lot worse from here).

I know this isn't saying much, but I think this could the best ff xiii game, despite all its glorious jank

I think XIII-2 and Lightning Returns would be considered some of the best RPG's of their generation if they weren't connected to XIII.

So thanks to FFXIV Crystal Tower Raid storyline, I decided it's time to finally play Final Fantasy 3 (it and 5 are the only SP FF I never even started).

What are my option for playing it ? I know about the 3D remake for DS but is the original sprite-based version ever localized ?

There's a non-official translation around since forever if you wanna roll with that, it's not bad should you want to enjoy the original. The 3D version can be tricky and tough, but it's a fun time.

You'll have to emulate the original version with an english patch to play it, but it's on famicom so you'll probably have to take that into account, I'm not entirely sure. If you decide to play the 3D one, just be sure that you take your time and round out your party appropriately, fights are consistently tough and you need to keep your head on a swivel if you wanna avoid getting destroyed. Your melee fighters might change jobs pretty frequently to take advantage of different effects and equipment ad the game pushes forth.

If you wanna just cheese the game though, you can make your party all Monks and farm Job Levels by making everyone defend and one attack, as it will lead to everyone gaining job exp and becomes more and more powerful, since Monk and Black Belt's unarmed damage (no weapons) depend on their Class Level. If you fight enough easy fights like this, you will steamroll through any and all encounters, including boss fights. Try to swap characters attacking as needed though, since attacking gives a secret "Proficiency" with the left/right hands that increases maximum hits done over time with them, and that will be something that will be noticeable if you only use the same one or two people to attack like that.

Outside of that though, the game is plenty challenging to enjoy regularly, just don't swap jobs a billion times, either in the original where it costs "Job Points" to do so, or the Remake where you get Crystal Sickness for a few fights every time you do it. Try to pace it out and stick with a solid team for a while if you can help it.

As long as you have at least one healer, one magic attacker and one physical attacker, you are probably good to go, no matter how that combination is achieved over time.

The 3D remake, specifically the PSP and Steam ports, will give you the better experience. It fleshes out the main characters a bit, giving them actual names and personalities. The updated soundtrack is lovely, and there's QoL features such as a fast forward option to make grinding less of a chore (such features weren't in the original DS release).

The Famicom version is just frustrating, even if not as downright terrible as the Famicom version of the second game. I'd skip it for now, and maybe give it a try after you beat the 3D remake.

By most accounts the final dungeon of the 3D version still has a notoriously high encounter rate which was not uncommon for games of that era. But that's usually the main complaint I've heard about it.

Lol I was thinking if the game had updated 2D version (like FF1, FF2 or FF6). No way I'm going to play the original famicom one....D:

I guess 3D version it is !

A 2D remake was actually in development for the Wonderswan Color. Unfortunately, it got cancelled.

I am so close to the FFXV platinum. Just a few more fish to catch. Besides that, I want to see the rest of the menace dungeons, I still got the hardest ones before me and of course omega weapon.

The end game enemies in FFXV are way too bullet spongey to actually be fun.

Yeah this is one of my main complaints about this game. Harder enemies just scale with hp but not actual difficulty. I think other main entries did that in a better way. Think of the super boss in lightning returns which had to be defeated under time pressure or the dark aeons in FFX which required strategy.

The dungeon in XV that doesn't let you heal is the real challenge in that game. Wish they had a harder difficulty that doesn't let you stock up on items.

I've finished FFXV. What a mess. The OST is excellent and visual effects are great, but everything else is mediocre to garbage. And the best bits of the 2013 E3 trailer are absent. Worst mainline FF I've played.

Only XIII and XIV left to finish my marathon !

Just don't use them. I had ten times more fun replaying XV without using items and always staying at level 1. Some fights will actually require a semblance of strategy to beat.

Speaking of XV, apologies for the silly question but is there any way to access the collaboration events (FFXIV, Assassin's Creed, etc) in any fashion? I'm guessing not...?

I haven't played the game since launch so I'm planning on checking out Royal Edition sometime soon.

Honestly, there's a lot of competition, seeing as it's the generation that got us Souls games. But seriously, Lightning Returns is really really good. Still have a ways to go, but I feel like it could end up as a top 5 final fantasy for me. Which is wild considering its critical reception and the overall animosity towards the xIII games in general. I think you're right that the connection to XIII hurt the sequels a lot

I think the doomsday clock turns people off. I went in with low expectations but I ended it up liking it a lot for what it is. Luxerion is cool aesthetically and the OST is full of bangers. I've always felt like XIII-2 and LR were held back by being connected to XIII. Also Serah and Noel > Most of XIII's characters.

Before playing the game, I did find the idea of the time limit off-putting and potentially stressful. But in practice, it's not bad at all. With chronostasis one really can take almost all the time one needs. And even so, the mechanic is not meaningless, because using EP on chronostasis carries the opportunity cost of not being able to use EP on the other very useful EP abilities (and vice versa) so you still have to make interesting decisions. If anything, I think they erred on the side of giving the player too much time. I'm on day 6 now and I have a good shot of wrapping up the main quests already at this point. I will absolutely finish the main quests by day 7, at the very latest. Considering how much I'm enjoying the game, it would have really sucked if I never gave it a chance because of the time limit, when in the end, said time limit is super lenient

There's too much to say and it's already been said before so I won't bother rehashing it, but man how much potential did this game have.

I finally finished it yesterday and I've been playing through the episodes; so far I've really enjoyed Gladiolus and Prompto. I've actually grown to adore this game and appreciate it for what it is, it could have been so so much more but it's definitely a decent game nonetheless

Isn't that how all FF games tend to work though? They're always one-off's, first attempts before things are started anew in the next game. Some things are iterative, but a fresh take like XV was bound to be full of flaws. So many of the first-attempts in this series were taken that way.

I think time's gonna tell on XV. It's a truly dope game, one that is mindful of past games but still goes forward with its own vision. It's why so many people dig games like VII and X. If it didn't completely sever itself from the open world once you hit the 2/3rd mark of the story, it'd probably be my top three in the entire series. I adore that game. Warts and all.
