The world's been on fire. What games haven't come and went this year?

This.

Also the spoiler thread has been pretty active with theories as to wtf is going on in the game. But it's the kind of game you play once, maybe dip into hard mode, then move on and wait for part 2, then replay it right before part 2 comes out in 2026.

Had it been some interesting semi open world game with tons of content and quests people would still be talking about it, similar to FF15. But as it stand this game is nothing special outside of the nostalgic factor. I love it for its characters and battle system, but everything else is kinda forgettable...

I say this as someone who likes FFXV, but FFXV discussion keeps bubbling up in large part because people insult it on their way to hypothesizing about FFXVI.

I haven't seen discussion about Minecraft or Fortnite in months I guess nobody is talking about them anymore.

Obviously that isn't true, and if you go to sites with dedicated message boards (gamefaqs as an example) FF7R is one of the most posted on boards for all PS4 games with only Monster Hunter World (live service game) and TLoU2 (still the new hotness) beating it.

Threads like this are just a reminder that we have such an excess of entertainment options and as a culture people on sites like resetera are always looking towards the next thing. The concept of binge culture and play a game as fast as possible to avoid being spoiled means most discussion happens in a very hyper focused space of about a month before most people move on.

This is not true, the game had a big impact. There was a ton of discussion about the game weeks after it launched that you probably missed. If you want to talk about a game that really came and went then RE3:R is an example of a title that was really a one-off.

The world's been on fire. What games haven't come and went this year?

I've generally always felt like "it feels like this game came and went!" is a dumb criticism, but it's definitely even dumber lately - of course it came and went, it launched right in the middle of the initial big COVID panic and series of lockdowns, which for people in the US is actually worse at this point than it was then, and even more shit has happened since. We live in a time where major news is made and forgotten sometimes within hours, forget days. Everything comes and goes now, not just games.

But even saying that, "coming out, being good, and people being satisfied with it" is hardly some sort of big knock against something. Most people liked it, it sold well, it was very well received, I'm sure people will talk about it a lot toward the end of the year round-ups, and so on. I know more and more people these days are conditioned to be used to games being these forever-service monsters that never end and are constantly added to, but just because something doesn't constantly fight to keep your attention outside of its month of release means nothing qualitatively.

Yes, as far as the overall story goes, this was just part 1, but it's not paced as a part 1, it's paced as a complete game. An 8 hour section made into an 35-40 hour game. If you get 4 more of these and play it as a one complete game at once it's gonna be a 40 hour game drawn out into a 150 hour one.

I'm just saying, I wouldn't look at that as a complete, true version, but more like a marathon. Unless you're into that.
Ah, gotcha. I've always viewed it as episodic ever since.

As for the 150 hour mark, something like The Witcher 3, Fallout 4, or even something like Red Dead Redemption 2 can play out for that long. But, yeah, I'd go so far as to call those playtimes "ultra marathons." 😋

Even though I was mad hyped for the original Final Fantasy VII, was there on launch, and have played it over several times, having to play it in chunks with large amounts of time occurring between doesn't appeal to me. And since Square seems to be expanding greatly upon the original, doing an ultra marathon for the "complete experience" is even more exciting!

It's a pretty mediocre game of which atleast half of it is padding and is a chore to play. Not to mention the ridiculous ending.

I'm not surprised at all that it's dropped off people's radar.

Some things get expanded. Other things are "hey, let's go back to the sewers ... because".

I think it flooded the discourse for like a month after it came out. Now The Last of Us 2 is out and Paper Mario and Ghosts of Tsushima are almost out so they've been taking up a lot of the discourse. It'll be remembered fondly come GOTY season.

Is every game gonna have a thread about how people stop talking about a game? It's been 3 months in one of the most hectic periods in the modern world.

Ultimately most media has its place and time. most move on aside from enthusiasts.

I got tired of its bloat and pointless sidequests.

Most of the game involves running around either a garbage dump or generic industrial areas. The settings were just so bland, so I think that hurt it.

I also didn't like having to constantly juggle between several characters because when the CPU controls them they are useless.

Probably because it's a mediocre game with some cool moments spread across its overly long campaign.

Buy FF12:TZA. The only good FF Square has released this generation.

As people have mentioned, the discussion cycle games have been turbo boosted for a variety of reasons, such that they maintain mindshare for a few weeks to a month before people grab on to the newest meta to discuss.

People consume media at a fervent pace in order to spit out hot takes and boilerplate observation. Discussion will take place again sometime down the road, with perhaps cleverer and more nuanced opinions at the fore.

There's not much to talk, remaked or not, it's still pretty much FF7, which has been talked for over 20 years. Also FF brand isn't as big as what it was, and there has been TLOU2 which right now is a stronger IP and now Ghost is coming.

Gonna say it's weird how has been not a single patch on it though.

It won't have the lasting power of the original. People were frothing over FF7 for a long time after its release.

Happens with basically every game on here lol. There are a couple exceptions like BotW(fairly unique and long), Bloodborne(NG+) and Witcher(Updates+Expansions+Free DLC+really long) but yeah.

I haven't finished FF7 yet myself. I'm nearing the end I believe but I don't post anything about it. It's a fairly standard and linear game with good combat. Not much to talk about really. You either like it or you don't.

Og ff7 was one of my favourite games
Of all time and I have played it many times.

remake was sold on eBay as soon as it was finished. It really is a 4 hour story stretched and padded out. So called fleshing out added nothing of value imo.
Battle system was fun as hell though.

Doesn't this happen to pretty much every game? Once the honeymoon period is over conversation moves on to the next big thing. Seems odd to single out FFVII.

My favourite game of the year so far with TLoU2 just behind it for me, but also one of my favourites for the whole gen. There was a lot of discussion and podcasts and it was spoken about to the hills and back. Theory crafting, spoiler chat, this game mechanic or this part of the game vs the original so many discussions and discourse were had. It isn't a service game or an a 'slice of life' style game like Animal Crossing so once discourse has been had it has a finite life. It reviewed well, people seemed to mostly like it but it wasn't without criticism and now we look to see what they do with part 2. Also it is relatively ironic that as I write this another thread about the game in this very forum discussing plot points popped up 11 minutes ago.

Exactly this.

The game is not terrible, but it's clearly not great by any means. It's 8-10h worth of good moments and fights, stretched to be a 30+ hour "JRPG". It feels great during the first 3-4 hours but most of the middle-late sections are mediocre and too long.

by the end of the 35 hours or so of playtime ; I just wanted it to be over with.
You may have answered your own question. Doesn't sound like you were eager to talk about it after playing it either, and a lot of people were probably in the same boat. Though much padded it was still just a remake, so it's not like there was much to discuss about it that hadn't already been done.

I personally think it's been part of the conversation an appropriate amount since release.

I mean I don't think there is that much more to discuss about the game. People went crazy with theories about the next game and the ending already so until more details of the next part of the project start to leak there isn't much else to do.

id say most games I play immediately exit my brain after I finish them. I honestly cant remember most stuff about games ive played more than a couple months ago.

Probably because it doesn't inspire much conversation outside of the ending, and even that's just like "uh, whatever."

The game is middling to OK as a video game, but some franchise people view it as more than a game, you know?

I keep seeing fan art
Big ol impossible anime tits never stop production.

Just abandoned it the other day on Chapter 14. I've played a couple dozen games through to completion during COVID and it was the first one I couldn't be motivated to finish.
Keep going dank skeletal! That chapter is fucking abysmal, and the pacing is pretty awful across the board, but that section screams out.

The rest is worth it though, sorta. I dunno. Mixed bag.

This too.

I feel like some bigger games came out recently and dominated the public discourse. We also had a ton of gaming news this month and last, so I'm not surprised.

Played it. Beat it. Loved it so much its in my top 3 of the generation. And now I wait for the sequel. Idk what should be being said?

Last of Us 2 is no different. Played it. Beat it. Loved it. One of my favorite games ever. And thats it. 🤷🏾‍♂️

They gave it that awful ending to spur discussion, but the multiple timeline nonsense just makes it completely uninteresting to talk about, since the possibilities are endless.

I enjoyed my time with it, loved it really. It was one of the few games I bought this year and do not regret it, but I just bought last of us 2 and am on my second playthrough at the moment. I will need more time until I go back to play ff7 again, but i will definitely go back again, probably after i finish my third playthrough of horizon zd.

I hated the entire last chapter of the game so much I guess I just put it out of my mind. I have no interest in going back to it. For every good decision, there's several more bad. The game has odd pacing and the choices made on which parts of the story to expand often baffled me.
Now I remember, I was shaking my head for nearly the entire last chapter. This is all my opinion, of course. It seems the changes have been well received so I suppose it's a positive thing. Perhaps I'm out of touch with contemporary tastes.

A single player gamer needs a hook to keep up the discourse. For example the original FFVII (ironic as it might seem today) was cutting edge AAA for the time and the first JRPG experience for most people in the west.

Remake is a good game but doesn't offer anything groundbreaking or truly exceptional to remain in the spotlight.

I absolutely loved FF7R and can't wait for the next one, but I guess I don't have anything else to discuss or any reason to bring it up again recently? You can probably make this thread for most hyped games that people immediately played upon release. You're not wrong though, it's just not something that correlates to the reception of the game.

A great game. Looking forward to the next one...but that's pretty much all we got until we hear some news regarding the next one.

That's generally the theme with new releases though. After a big game release, we all play it and discuss the various and controversial aspects of it within a month or 2 and then move to the next big game. I didn't expect FF7R to be an exception to that. Hype doesn't generally linger post release.
