Of course it's acceptable. Understandable, too! And let me add that it's completely possible that them not smiling is really unrelated to the loss, because if you look at the picture another user posted, even winners don't always smile.

When potentially millions of dollars in pro sports are involved and more importantly potential college scholarships in high school sports, it can be.
I'm used to the standard 3 place podium. It seems somewhat arbitrary to just extend it. I think the non-podium people should just get the same treatment as everyone else ie. not being on the podium.
