So Gokaiger is probably my favourite Sentai series and is the series that got me into Sentai. I was really hyped to hear it is getting a 10 years later special. In light of this among the Gokaigers who is you're favourite.

Gotta give it to my man Marvelous.

lol is this pirate power rangers or something

Yes.
For Super Sentai's 35th Anniversary, they introduced a Pirate team that is able to use the powers of the past 34 teams (and later crossovers add future teams).
Super Sentai is the basis for Power Rangers.
We don't talk about the attempt Saban made to adapt it. It's reaaaaaaal bad.

Yes, and it is by far the greatest iteration. A 35th anniversary celebration of the entire franchise while they power up into various iterations through the years.

Watch the first episode subbed. It is so batshit stupid it's hilarious. And that's not counting the initial battle of ~150 Power Rangers on the field at once in the first two minutes

Low-key really wanted to cosplay as Captain Marvelous when this first premiered when I was in university because the style, the swagger, was unmatched

dropping the "is this power rangers" joke pretense to say: I've watched the first dozen or so episodes of gokaiger and I didn't like it very much

but also to me most sentai past gaoranger are not my bag. I am firmly of the stance that the Noboru Sugimura run of Sentai is Sentai at it's absolute best (do not let me catch anyone talking shit about Ohranger) and it + it's surrounding seasons are the "golden era" of sentai. The newer stuff (as in, the last 15 or so years oh god ive been watching sentai for half my life what am I doing) just doesn't do it for me as much, though I've heard I should check out kiramager because it is very much Naruhisa Arakawa being Arakawa and I think that dude has written some absolute dynamite shows

...well now I feel like a dunce for mansplaining pirate power rangers 😅

I guess in my defense the only power rangers I've watched were Saban's back in the 90s so it thrives purely on nostalgia, and this series, so it's probably why I enjoy it's nonsensical plots as much as I do. Looking at this fan wikia of Kiramager though, I could probably be tempted into watching this.

But also I am upset with the passage of time that lines up with me watching the gokaiger in university and now ten years have passed that its now coming up on the 45th anniversary 🙃

Gai. Ikari Gai. He's supposed to be us.

He also has an untransformed fight with Ryo from Dairanger and it's amazing. I gotta give props to the girls though because they really did a good job with them, Ahims episode about her parents and the Gokaigers supporting her in the fight was done amazingly well.

I feel bad for having my instinctual response to seeing someone talking about tokusatsu be to make the "is this power rangers" joke (a joke that has literally never been funny) so don't worry about it haha

I watched Power Rangers as a kid, but fell off maybe when I was around 10-11. But then I got into Japanese tokusatsu in high school around the time Go-Onger started, and now... well frankly I'd say I love tokusatsu more than I like even video games at this point. Oops!

I'd say, if you've only seen more recent Sentai, you're doing yourself a disservice. The 90's era (Jetman-Timeranger) are absolute bangers, just hit after hit of incredible show after incredible show. I cannot recommend that era enough. They're all on officially released English subbed DVD too!

Post Gaoranger is one of the strongest eras in my opinion, everything from Hurricanger to ToQger is solid to great.
Sure, I think that's a valid take. To me, Go-Onger was a fun romp (my first toku!), I think Shinkenger was legit good, and I enjoyed what I've seen of Go-Busters, Kyoryuger and ToQger, but compared to the 90's era I genuinely think it doesn't hold a candle for me.

The 90's era (I might more specifically call out the Sugimura-led shows, Zyuranger, Dairanger, Kakuranger and Ohranger) are just absolute ground-breakers for the genre. Where I found the 2000's-2010's era to be hit or miss (both on a show-to-show and episode-to-episode basis) I find the 90's era to be extremely consistent in terms of quality. I get that it's.. well it's definitely aged and harder for newer fans to go back to so I don't expect it to be for everyone, but for me, that's the golden age.

I maintain that Carranger is actually my favourite Sentai and also the best Sentai, but also I think Carranger and it's comedy really only "works" if you've watched a lot of pre-Carranger Sentai because it expertly plays on a lot of the series' tropes for extremely strong effect.

If you want a specific recommendation: Watch Dairanger!

Dairanger is phenomenal because it has one of the strongest Sentai casts I've ever seen. All 5 Rangers have their own stories going on and they all feel unique, because for that show they actually had different writers focusing on different characters' focus episodes. This results in a show with an incredibly unique feel episode-to-episode. Also, some of the best action direction the series has ever seen. The show's action is very heavily wuxia inspired and rules.

Episodes 26 and 27 of Dairanger are the best episodes of Sentai they have ever produced.

Oh damn that is high praise! I'll definitely check this out soon after I'm caught up on Loki then!

Marvelous is a total boss, all that swagger and he can back it up. Yellow was my second favorite, but the whole team was great though.

This was a great squad and all of them are awesome. Gonna have to give it to Luka though. Love her attitude.

Always thought this era had some vague semblance to One Piece, it being pirate themed and all.
Red = Luffy (Plucky confident leader in search of the ultimate treasure)
Blue = Zoro (Multisword specialist)
Green = Chopper/Usopp (the doctor/cowardly one in the group who shows their moments of greatness through unconventional means)
Yellow = Nami (Money grubbing street smart member of the team)

Don't know where Pink and Silver fit in though, maybe Vivi and Frankie respectively.

A toss up between Red and Yellow as my favourite - I'll give it to yellow.

Since Toei owns One Piece this was intentional

The decade immediately following Gao was good though. Sentai honestly does not lose me until post-Kyoryu and never recovered until Kiramager + Zenkaiger.

I think the One Piece inspiration is pretty obvious. Ahim was Vivi because Gokaiger was a decade ago, so she wasn't that forgotten even if she didn't last long as an actual crew member. Marvelous' personality is pretty different from Luffy's though, which helps avoiding direct comparisons since he's such an integral part of the show's story and cast interactions.

I'm a fan of Joe because of that one episode that showed up his sword skills, had him use 5 Ranger Keys at once, and ultimately gave him a tie to one of the villains. But I have to give it to Gai for his Super Sentai fanboyism.
