Given how evergreen Nintendo titles are, Metroid Dread is going to outsell Demon Slayer in Japan I'd guess.

Demon Slayer should have been on Switch wow.

Can I just say it's nice seeing "Famitsu" instead of "Media Create" in the title. 99% of the sales data was from Famitsu, so I don't get why it was called MC save for history. Not only that but there wasn't even a link from where the data was sourced (Gematsu). Not a big deal or anything, just wanted to point it out.

iM@S has sold over 76500 in Japan/Asia on PS4/PC, but only about 16000 on PS4 in Japan. So at least one of most of the sales being outside Japan and most of the sales being on PC has to be true. That's wild.

And just this morning someone in a Twitch chat I was in was trying to say Metroid was doing horribly in JP. because "usually the top games sell around 300K". He also, coincidentally enough, hated the game. Quite odd, that.

if aniplex was smart, they'd commission a switch port of demon slayer

It doesn't seem to have done very well on PC according to Steamcharts numbers.
Steamcharts just measures concurrent users. Normally a ballpark between peak ccu at launch and sales can be like x10, but that might be a bit different with games that are more popular in specific regions (such as Japan + SEA + China) as they might be online at the same time. What you can say is that it sold at least more than 6k and probably way more than 10k.

Also if you want to do normal data analysis for launches, it is better to use Steamdb graphs as they have a much higher resolution (steamdb pings every 10 minutes vs every 60 minutes from steamcharts). This time the difference is minimal, but it can be more significant in other games.

Really happy with Metroid. It's probably already done better than Fusion's LTD with digital.

How much should it have sold? Seems about right for the type of game it is but I'm not an expert.
Feel like a lot of estimates would have had the PS4 version sell at least 100K and that the PS5 version would do better. I was always of the opinion that Dread would eventually outsell both versions combined just because it's a good game plus it's on the Switch.

DS hasn't been received well and it's not on the Switch, so that doesn't bode well lol.

Naruto is IMO the most interesting comparison. Since these games are being developed by same company (CyberConnect2) and belong to exactly same genre (arena fighters). FW sales of latest Naruto games were always lower than 100k, and probably digital ratio below 10%. Demon Slayer fw is over 100k and the Deluxe Edition included early access, which should have helped digital sales this time.

[PS3, 2013] Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm 3: 84.140 units fw
[PS3, 2014] Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm Revolution: 41.547
[PS4, 2016] Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm 4: 55.414
[PS4+PS5, 2021] Demon Slayer The Hinokami Chronicles: 115.036

Right, I think it was a historical thing. Media Create used to be more available or something like that.

Gematsu is providing the translations, but this weekly Famitsu's information is publicly available, which is where Gematsu is getting it. I think you generally find it here:

Although that's a previous week, so I guess it's published as an article first.

I still can't believe I live in a timeline where a Metroid game isn't bombing in Japan.

Oh hoho OH HO BOY. Have you not been here the last few months for that bullshit. Some people were fucking hyping this game up on the IP alone going for like 250k-300k fw.

What does that matter though in an analysis? I'm sure there were even more claiming it would bomb because "not on switch". Anime arena fighters have waned in popularity for years now. Demon Slayers sales seem about right based on recent trends.

What anime games do big numbers like that though?

Dragon Ball obviously
Gundam?
One Piece?
Naruto?
I feel like even most Dragonball and One Piece games don't sell that well. Like a few have, but most aren't selling gangbusters either and those are series with long defined periods of being super popular whereas Demon Slayer's growth was so fast that we haven't had time to see if it was just a fad or not yet

I don't know which big shot thought it was a good idea to release a Demon Slayer game on PS4/PS5 exclusively when the entire Demon Slayer audience (kids) have Nintendo Switches! Who makes these business decisions?!

The source was never Gematsu, it was always media create and/or famitsu.

BotW had a good run, Splatoon 2 hanging still, curiously the regular package not the one that includes the DLC.

Demon Slayer did about 20k better than I thought it would. Pretty happy with Metroid. I hope we see another classic Metroid in the near future.

Demon Slayer did not do well at all. What a fuck up.

What? It looks to have outsold Metroid Dread so far, on hardware with about 40% as large an installed base. They both seem to be doing reasonably well. I guess you could hope either one would be a huge breakthrough hit but I don't think there was a compelling reason to expect it.

It was still called MC thread for searching purposes going back to 20 years of threads.
No, it wasn't sourced from Gematsu at all, it was straight from Famitsu.

Yikes at Demon Slayer. What happened?
Nothing really happened, the game performed in line with other anime-themed CyberConnect2 games.
Some may have thought that the licence would propel sales but since the announcemnt the game didn't gather any hype. Arena-fighter games are not really interesting, content is laughable and the game is very obviously made to cash-in with the upcoming second season of the TV series.

I think anime-based games have a hard time now that Dragon Ball FighterZ exists and shows that you can create something great if you give it to a developer who is not only focused on visuals but also gameplay.

Comparing recent Naruto sales is sort of missing the point, what you should be looking at is games released during the franchise peak in the mid 00s. And even then keep in mind at it's peak Naruto wasn't as big as Demon Slayer is now.

I don't agree. For example, MH Rise sold ten times more than Stories 2 and both belong to the same IP. The reason is obviously the genre.
But Stories 2 sold better than most JRPG these days, thanks to the IP Monster Hunter.
The same happened in case of Demon Slayer, it sold better than recent arena fighters thanks to the popularity of the IP.

Monster Hunter Rise is mainline Monster Hunter.

Stories 2 is a spinoff.

They're not licensed off of the Monster Hunter anime, one is the main source material.
