Folks talking about bigal2k6 here oh my god. That's some old shit. I remember posting a retsupurae video about him in the cringe thread. A poster here didn't appreciate that tho. Should have posted the one with casual racism instead I guess. There was some shit between him and some guy named goronchev. didn't know what the fuck was going on, because I was a kid, but I stopped watching soon anyways.

Wait, what did happen to retsupurae?

Not sure about Betus, but slowbeef is still around streaming on twitch.

cobernami456, quit youtube cold turkey to focus on his personal life

i still go back and watch spoony's phantasmagoria 2 playthrough, it's his magnum opus to me in terms of humor, i don't know much of his commentary was freestyled or written, but it was excellent

i always wonder what it would have been like to see a healthy spoony play something like detroit become human

Surprised nobody's mentioned Jenna Marbles. She was absolutely a fixture on YouTube for nearly a decade and shut it all down because of a (deserved) blackface accusation. She issued what seemed like a serious, heartfelt, and reflective apology and then absolutely just vanished from sight. Most recently she got engaged to her longtime boyfriend earlier this year but they've since both deactivated their Twitter accounts. Absolutely wild.

A year without Jenna Marbles - The Berkeley Beacon

Marbles’ apology stood out from other apology videos on the platform because it was clear that she felt genuinely sorry, and she acknowledged that you can’t really stop hurting people while continuing to profit off the successes of your past mistakes.

Damnit somehow I missed this.
Julien still streams on twitch and he's an absolute joy.

Athene & Husky come to mind for me as a big WoW/Starcraft player.
KevJumba i have noticed has tried to get his Youtube channel back off the ground recently, he was huge back in the day, pretty much all the old big dog channels have declined, including Smosh.

iirc KevJumba just got tired of making videos then got into a huge car accident which I think changed his view on things. He like broke his spine and had a lot of other terrible injuries associated with it which took him quite a while to recover from. Think he was definitely done with youtube after that. I recently discovered on tiktok of all places, that he actually streams mostly valiant under the name "cybermuse" on twitch.

hdstarcraft, he wasn't super huge or anything but was up and coming in the gaming scene and just literally dropped off the face of the earth in the middle of a game series commentating.

Thunderf00t. Haven't heard that name in forever but I believe he went GamerGate and likely just full alt-right.

He was big in the early atheist YouTube movement tho. May not apply here, since he may still be big in those circles for all I know.
I've been watching him lately. He has 1 million subs, and his videos get 0.25mill views, mostly "busting" videos. He's doing ok.

At the end of the day he pissed away all of his goodwill between his near-zero work ethic, his acceptance at being a piss-poor Twitch streamer, and his Twitter addiction.
Christ, I remember SpoonyOne's Twitch streaming attempts.

Piss-poor is right. The man spent all his energy arguing with his chat over the smallest things, it was a miserable experience.

I think Angry Joe is the only one that escaped from Channel Awesome/TGWTG without crippling debt/mental health issues.

I couldn't tell you whether he is still thriving or not, because I unsubbed and stopped watching a single second of his trash output the moment he outed himself as a gun-fellating, gamergating, Republican pile of shit. I gave him more passes that I probably should, but the sudden swerve into gun range content and defending the ownership of fucking assault rifles I was fully done. Suddenly the 'Angry Joe' character became clear it was not a work or exaggerated for effect and was actually the personality of an asshole.

For me it's without a doubt Classic Game Room. I used to love Mark and his humour, he tackled a lot of different games, had a sizable audience. But after being on the losing end of some YouTube shemanigans, switching to Dailymotion and Amazon (preventing me from even watching his content) he changed the channel to "80s Comics" and reviewed old comic books... And he disappeared. Last I saw he was selling his old stuff on instagram and eBay so I'm guessing he's out of the game for good, a real shame.

Miss him so much. Easily the best reviews on the whole platform. Just so much fun. This is the one that really hurts.

Matt, Pat and Woolie are definitely not fallen because they all still do YouTube and make great stuff, but hearing "Matt and Pat are no longer friends" hit me like a truck.

Especially knowing that the business side of running the channel corroded their friendship, that made me feel like as a fan I fueled their own demise. I still feel sad thinking about it.

Until I realised that they are just as good apart as they were together, this was a really sad day when I loaded up YouTube that morning. They are all still putting out great stuff (Woolie with the podcasts and fighting games, Pat's streams can occasionally be great, and Matt especially has been making incredible content), with Liam only occasionally uploading stuff due to other commitments. And whenever Liam appears on Matt's channel it is always a pleasure and becomes priority watching.

Sometimes things need to happen and the split definitely did for the sake of all their mental health (and also for whatever we don't know, that is absolutely NOT our business), but I do still wish I lived in an alternate timeline where they were all still friends.

If he really alt-right though? I remember him being vocally anti-Trump (because Trump isanti-science) and I see a few videos calling out alt-right politicians as well as Covid denialism.

Even going back earlier then the Reviewer tube and Influencer era of YouTube (and in some case predating the website), hardly anyone from the Abridged era or Machinima era of internet programing exist today.

for the former, Team4Star has moved on after burnout with DBZA and it hurting their official dubbing work while YGOA barely gets updated while all the others just vanished.

With the latter, Red vs Blue seems to be only one still exist outside of people using the sub-genre for porn or silly TF2 videos and the like. Didn't help that the site/YouTube channel Machinima who started out as place to promote Machinima shows pivoted it's work away from that to being a generic Gaming channel to the point many people didn't even know machinima is the name for a sub-genre of animation.

Last time I saw him, years ago, all his videos had turned into anti-feminist and anti-SJW crap. Never seen him since.

You can't get any more fallen than Mr. Anime. A pioneering member of the YouTube anime community who went on to murder his younger brother, mother and father by gunshots.

Not as big as some mentioned YouTubers, but others might remember him:

Cloud8745

youtube.fandom.com

Magatsu Cloud

Aaron, better known online as Magatsu Cloud (formerly Cloud8745), is an American pioneer in YouTube Let's Plays/walkthroughs, which is a popular form of videos on YouTube. He was the first person to do walkthroughs on several games, such as Silent Hill and Kirby 64, though his most well known...

The guy was one of the let's players before it became a thing on YouTube.
Unsurprisingly there was a ton of drama and toxicity that surrounded the guy. Bad mental states and toxic fanbases are a bad mix.

Cloud's still around, but obviously not as prominent as he was way back in the mid to late 00s.
Cloud and his former troll TheArchFiend apparently had a conversation last year, which was wild to see considering the drama between them.
Thanks for sharing this. I remember enjoying that I Want To Be The Guy LP and remember when one day the channel was just gone after a stint of just not paying attention to it. I knew he was kinda messy on terms of getting into it with others, but thought his delivery in the content was funny. Of course I was also in high school at the time so I might find it grating now if I tried returning to it. Glad to see he turned out alright, based on that link. Might go check it out later!

Benzaie went on to be a pretty big youtuber/streamer in the French scene since he left TGWTG in 2011. Of course, most of his curent audience doesn't know about his past career on TGWTG because of the language switch.

Like I said, I'm not sure where he went because I bounced once he went anti-Muslim and pro-Gamergate.

If he's not a Trump guy, great. That's one shitty flag he's not flying in a sea of red flags, I guess.

Changes in how copyright law is applied on Youtube pretty much killed abridging altogether. Team Fourstar themselves where not only burnt out by DBZA creation, but also from dealing with constant takedowns, and not owning most of what they'd worked on.

It sucks though. I think abridging brought a lot to the table for some shows.

Boogie2988 had a lot of worse qualities about him than just being a fence-sitting centrist with a letslandinthemiddle.gif attitude. The guy has had multiple meltdowns on youtube, to the point where he served prison time. He's been revealed to be a creepy and manipulative asshole in his personal life. There's various hour-long videos documenting his "fall", and it's pretty sad when you know of his hard upbringings and his mental / weight-related struggles, but nothing excuses the sort of person he's become.

Unrelated, but most of the self-proclaimed "atheist intellectuals" of the 00s turned out to be far right pieces of shit, whiny anti-feminist anti-sjws, or terrible in some way or another. (thunderf00t, sargon, amazing atheist etc.)

Jontron never got cancelled. If the constant fearmongering of conservatives about "cancel culture" by the "militant left" were true, you'd expect Jon's youtube career to have been banished to the shadow realm after his comments and doubling-down non-apology. Instead he went on to have tens of millions of views on his videos, grow his fanbase by replacing former fans with people who didn't care about his stances, and he still gets a hefty buck from youtube. Nowadays it looks like he's a reaction youtuber and pretends his "political opinions" never happened, with no blowback.
Either way Jon doesn't do anything I'm interested in anymore and I'm glad he left GameGrumps when he did. I remember the big deal it was when he did his Star Wars games series of videos and in the last one he had Arin do a guest spot so people could finally shut up about the drama.

Then Trump came along and opened some weird door and he showed his hand. Thankfully by that point he had stopped doing video games and I stopped caring.

I remember watching the podcast with Totalbiscuit and Jesse what's his name to find out what was going on.

Not early days but the Hodgetwins.......god damn.

you could see em slightly changing year by year until they thought fuck it and went full right wing grift.

This one hurt on a personal level, I remember watching their vids with my then gf and sharing them to friends and there were hints of stupid that I chalked up to them being from the US South like me because I've heard similar things before but then I dropped out after one too many occurrences of hateful rhetoric. I checked back hoping them seeing trump would have switched them up in the trump era and they were damn near unrecognizable right wing grifting ghouls.

Felt pretty hurtful and a betrayal because I was rooting for more black creators and they just became...I'll just leave that last word unwritten. Fucking sucks.

Holy shit he made me laugh so much on a couple of his cod 4 mw lets play videos. He leaned on the console wars thing hard, I remember he made a video juat to announce which console he was going to buy.

Another youtuber who had so much potentital but decided to stop before blowing up was Happyslip. Her sketches were amazing. She even did one with kevjumba, and he was huge at the time.

Dawkins identifying himself as a "cultural christian" was fucking hilarious. I really can't be surprised that online atheism ended up taking this turn given how many of the anointed figureheads were abrasive white dudes.

YouTubers who were big back in the early days but have fallen from grace. What examples can you think of?

I can think of some like Armake21, Spax3, DarknesstheCurse, BigAl2k6... all followed in the footsteps of James Rolfe "the Angry Video Game Nerd". But there's one key difference there: the Nerd is just a character that James plays, the others... weren't playing characters.

But most chiefly I can think of if, is Noah Antwiler the SpoonyOne, his fall has been well documented, once one of the most popular YouTubers with his reviews of Final Fantasy VIII, but through various events, was diagnosed as bipolar and slowly his content production has whittled down to nothing, the bank has foreclosed on his home, his girlfriend April left him and just recently he announced that his dog Oreo, who was the last bit of happiness he had left has passed away... :-(

It's just sad...
What the hell yesterday I literally was randomly thinking about the youtube rant community for some reason

Though I was banned for 3 days so I couldn't notice this thread until now

Ofcourse this threads scope is bigger then the yotuhe rant community

But God as much as those guys justifiably hated channel awesome
There videos where so much worse

And as far as I'm aware there was no diamonds in the rough like channel awesome had todd who was genuinely good

I wonder if darkness regrets being an edgy teenager and deleting his original channel for a social experiment. Like I doubt viewer retention would have stuck around over the 2010s anyway unless he changed with the times but it still be more subs then today

Bigal2k6 is just low level right wing culture war stuff now

Bet he feels jealousy of the crowder and Ben Shapiro types who actually make money off their bs and not internet hasbeens

Like is there anything sadder then being a 2009 youtuber has-been and now just posting maga ahit then gets 500 views max?

I followed a YouTuber that made video's about Mass Effects 3 multiplayer, builds, tactics, min maxing and such. Really fantastic dude and he's the one why I stuck around in that MP for so long, then he did a speculation video about that Andromeda trailer and that's the last thing I've heard from him on his channel.

He did have kids around that time so that also factors in to it but still, it's kinda sad.

It's Classic Game Room for me. I was glad I could see him host a pinball panel a few years ago. After that it seemed to be a mixture of declining viewership and his interest in the medium all together.

At least we'll still have the theme

Classic Game Room maybe.

yeah i followed mark through the bitter YT changes, up to the amazon prime deal - he was more & more either phoning it in or pushing for KS content, and i'd actually missed undertow by that point

wish he'd come back but looks like he's happier with comics/etc. he still did the best GOTY shows i'd seen.

I just never got over that MrGSTAR321 only hit it big on YouTube after he quit doing videos all together. Man had the funniest feud with Bo Rai Cho in all of mortal kombat and his rage compilations just give you life.
