Dunno why people are shitting on mr.wiz for shutting down that disgusting and embarrassing DOA segment which rightfully should be. They once again backpeddled on their bs talk about toning down sex appeal and wanting the series to be taken seriously while the director of the series itself is promoting boob/ass pads of the lolis in the game, gravure idols fondling each other on stage, while he happily manipulates the camera to show sexual positions in the game. DOA will always be a joke titty fighter that will never overcome its stigma of being one because thats exactly what the company wants it to be and they know it no matter how badly DOA players try to deny it.

Shimbori lied in all those interviews. The costumes you unlock are still super sexy.

I do wonder if maybe this was DOA's attempt at gaining publicity through controversy?

Unlikely.

As someone else said, they thought they could play both sides of the fence. Do DOA marketing the same way they've done it the whole time in Japan so they can sell a bunch of costume DLC for the girls, and cut back on that type of shit in marketing the game for the western audiences. Geniuses forgot that the world is connected these days and trying to push for an E-Sports angle for your title worldwide and selling skimpy costumes in one region are counterproductive goals.

So the whole ad was about you could fuck around (literally) with the photo mode? Seems pretty low, even for DoAs standards.

I think they're just not sure how to go about advertising DoA in the year 2019.
People want features, guest characters, decent mechanics, and an appealing aesthetic.

But those kind of games are becoming common nowadays, a bit crowded...
Perhaps they should do a wrestling cross-promotion with NJPW where the wrestlers do cosplay as DoA.

I think it's important to note that cultural differences in tolerance for such things create vastly different "red line" scenarios, so while this is totally on-brand and kosher in Japan, it makes Americans freak the hell out, especially in the wake of the #MeToo awakening. It's a tongue-in-cheek joke for the Japanese that doesn't land in the same place for American sensibilities, and if the organizers had done their homework on the presentation's contents and proposed direction before it started airing, this might have been completely avoidable from the outset.

Also, I think they're marketing to two different audiences, because it's obvious that the Japanese audience is reveling in the sexualization, whereas the American marketing campaign is trying to downplay the hell out of it so it's seen as a fighting game that's trying its best to take itself seriously. Very interesting to see this in action.
Just because it's on brand and "kosher" in Japan doesn't mean they are in the right. Let's not forget Japan is a place that very much treats sexual harassment as a joke so I'm not surprised they would hand wave this KT presentation.

I'm not understanding why this wasn't avoided in advance - I might be missing some context. Was it a communication failure between EVO and the EVO Japan event organisers?

I can't really blame DOA for dumb, overtly sexual marketing - sex is used to sell all kinds of products. I'd even go as far as to say it was so ridiculous as to be humorous. Unless they weren't upfront about the ad in advance it seems like a EVO failure that they panickingly rectified.

I never said they were in the right, only that it's "in the right" enough from their own culture point of view. I'm just attempting to acknowledge how the differences in perspective create a significant level of tone-deafness across cultural divides, and not to impose my own cultural moral code upon something else being put on display in a country where that moral code obviously differs on a fundamental, societal level.

For what it's worth, I agree with you. I think it's the height of poor taste coming from a country where sexual exploitation is shockingly blase, but again, I have to acknowledge that I'm on the outside looking in through a lens that doesn't fit my particular cultural scope.

I really dont understand the reaction to the tweet. It would be one thing if people critical of the overt sexualization and objectification within the fgc reacted with "you can say that it doesn't reflect the core values of the FGC, but it does seem to be emblematic of a larger and pervasive issue"

But no, the complaints are coming from the fgc to say "how dare you speak for me to say that objectification doesnt represent my values."

What? I'm so confused.

I think they should forget about esports and being treated like a serious fighting game, the skimpy suits DLC are more profitable and a reliable source of income. Maybe try a "Garou" of DOA with other name as a better way to "start clean" with no/low fanservice than making a fg with the DOA name thats already "tainted".

If they look the other way regarding sexual harassment then their cultural moral code must be pretty broken. Sexual harassment is bad no matter how you look at it; I think any human can agree on that.

I think that's just Japan being Japan and I mean its DOA, they know their audience. The girls were also having a big laugh about it.
Well, if the girls were doing it consensually and enjoying it, I don't think it's a huge issue. Of course it's much harder to know though because we live in a society/economy that objectifies women and thus forces some to make careers out of doing it, so would they do the same in a different power balance? I don't know.

I'm going to have to assume that Tecmo Koei did this without any ok because there's no way in hell this was gonna fly with anyone running EVO. DOA already had a rocky relationship with EVO and after this mess I don't see them ever willingly hosting the game.

There is no consensus within Japan that sexual harassment is okay.

This is a good example of the culture clash between Japanese and North American right now, the cultural climates are just VERY different and seemed to be getting farther apart. We can probably expect more of this kind of thing in the future, as I think the outrage is head scratching to many in the East, but it's very much real in the West. The two seemed to be going in very different directions very quickly.

Gravure models showed their boob windows on stream and promoted Dead or Alive 6. The other video shows the free camera in the game and Bass holding Nyotengo in a certain way, stopping the game and turning around both of them and showing of Bass well...looks like he does something sexual to Nyotengu. The free camera thing is nothing new. Feels like an old autoshow where they did this too all the time.
News to me that that free camera thing is an old habit for these events.

Goddamn, how the fuck does shit like that get a pass?

If EVO does not want to highlight it for the international audience I can completely understand.

This type of thing is pretty common here in Japan for events and generally normal prime time tv though. Wonder if DoA staffers did not give a detailed break down of what they were planning... Also these two ladies were at last years evo and a bunch of other FGC events before as fans and guests, guess they were contracted for this specifically this time.

Whoa. So were the two women hired by Evo or DOA dev? I am just in shock this was allowed. I get it's common in Japan, but it's not okay.

While that kind of material is not okay at all, that is the kind of stuff you see on other streams not Evo.

Wiz is in the right to be mad and all because this affect his business, but man the FGC will NEVER gonna shut up about this now haha.

Japan being Japan means that Japan is still a highly sexist country and shouldnt be ignored because reasons.

I never said that, just giving context to the person I responded too. This is just tame in japanese tv. They just are outrageous and everything is a laugh/crazy banter. They also do this with the opposite sex if that makes you feel better. Also this:

Unlikely.

People always try to characterize this stuff as people going on a moral crusade when in reality most western audiences just see it as marketing to children. There are adults outside of Japan that enjoy panty shots, but it's just not the norm. We have infinite porn and plenty of sexual content in the most popular American and British shows in the world that is all aimed at adults rather than made palatable for horny 12 year olds.

I feel both places have people on both sides.

Some in Japan don't like this stuff. Some in the west love this stuff. Brittany Spears made it big wearing school outfit dancing sexy. This stuff sells to people all over. Seems most keep quiet about it. Are sales bad for this series? Have not played one since PS2.

I feel like your trying to make a "gotcha!" moment when there's a difference between a thread of funny gif's about unintentional glitches in FIFA and the objectification real life women on stage.

don't need a detailed study. The sales of Chun Li costumes and other sexy SFV costumes speak for themselves

You have sales figures for Chun costumes? All Chun costumes are "sexy"? Buying costumes make a person someone who disrespects women?

Your initial comment was baseless and you decided to double down on it when called out. You literally called hundreds/thousands of people who you don't even know exist, disrespectful to women.
