I'd imagine Melee being cut is 40% Evo management being tired of jumping through all the special hoops it requires (CRTs, etc) and 60% Nintendo mandating that it be cut to focus on Ultimate (see also: why Pokken was in Evo a few years ago.)

I think DOA6 was doomed because there was no way Evo was gonna have three 3D games on the lineup.
