Cartoons, roller blades, and animal cookies (I swear they changed the frosting ingredients) were all better. The 90's definitely had some things that are debatable in terms of "being better." For instance, the lack of social media and cell phones was a boon because people actually physically spoke to one another, but now I can play games online and watch a ton of porn. I really don't miss the Victoria's secret catalogs. There will always be rose-colored glasses for our childhoods; that's just human.

Before 2000, I didn't know of a world where Dumbya or Dump would be President. That could've been an illusion though. It's not like assholes didn't exist before.

Everything was worse in the 90s.

People call it a golden age for creativity but this current golden age is easily better. We have less corporate control over what people consume. What's better than that?

You're being nostalgic, OP. Loads of stuff is way better now than in the 90s.

Although I do wish I could bring back arcades from the 90s...

Probably nostalgia / being young, yeah, but I have many fond memories of the 90s as well. Still enjoy the games of that era most, popular music was appealing to me, and while the internet is vastly superior now, there was something quite magical about it when it first started becoming big, all of the discovery to be made, amateur website creation booming, etc.

I disagree, it's better now, but there's nothing wrong to have nostalgia for the 90s. Games were awesome, such as my memories of 4-player Smash Bros. on the N64 with family. <3

That would be nostalgia, OP. Enjoy it while it lasts.

Give it another six years, it'll be all about the 2000's.

The West moving into a post cold war atmosphere definitely felt like things were getting better in the world on a top level view (even if obviously everything wasn't perfect).

We've made a lot of progress since then though be it in crime, medicine, tech, world views ect.. even if shit currently feels like a cluster fuck. In many ways things are better than they've ever been on this Earth.

I'm rather fond of some of the media of the period, but my life is just much more comfortable now (and I was a young child in the '90s). Lack of consistent internet alone would be enough to drive me up the wall.

They are quite unremarkable to me, apart from a few tv series and cartoons/movies I don't really have much to think back to... but that's probably because my life was always rather boring lol

No, that's just nostalgia.. There were a ton of social issues that didn't get talked about back then. There was no Black Lives Matter and feminism in the 90's was... muted. LGBT oppression was rampant.

You sure about that?

As a counterpoint, the 90s were a fantastic time for Japanese sports cars- the RX-7 FD, the Toyota Supra, the NSX, and the 300ZX that we had those days were spectacular. Today's cars have gotten quite dull.

Back then, I still had decent vision and I didn't have a care in the world, but now I don't wear jorts and tube socks. It's a pretty fair tradeoff.

Having looked at the recent headliners I would agree Reading Festival was better in the 90's....

Except for the Stone Roses last attempt :)

I actually wanted to make this thread a few weeks ago and had a second thought.

Basically my point was, Morpheos was right, 1999 really was the height of the Western Civilization.

In the late 90s we had way less war, job was easier to find, there were more stores besides Amazon and Walmarts. Movies and internet were better in the 90s. There was no hollowed out middle class. No mass surveillance... etc

Somebody is going to give me a weak comeback about smartphone is better now, whatever. People just spend more time look at their hands while walking.

Oh yeah I forget Manga/Anime were better. Came at me bro.

Nah, and I say this as someone born in 1981, and got to be a teenager in the latter half of the decade.

We were pretty damn homophobic, for starters.
Not to mention that the Internet wasn't anywhere near as awesome.
While Western Animation is in a bit of a decline currently, the proceeding decade blew the doors off of the 90's in overall quality
Nowhere near as aware about how we treat women than we are now. Look at this forum if you want any evidence.

I love the 90's, but there's plenty of things we can leave there.

Except for diversity
And movies
And tv

I think kids had it great though when it came to tv, you had Batman, Animaniacs, Tiny Toons, Hey Arnold, Recess, Rugrats, Tail Spin, Powerpuff Girls, the first season of Pokemon, etc.

Also movie wise we had Shawshank Redemption, Toy Story, Seven The Matrix, Silence of the Lambs, Pulp Fiction, Jurassic Park, Shindlers List, The Lion King, Fight Club, Terminator 2.

I do think overall things are better now, but being a child in the 90's was a fantastic time.

Frankly I would argue the internet was better. No real closed garden ecosystems. No soul sucking social media.

In terms of gaming? As soon as Quake / Ultima Online was going, you already had peak online gaming. It's just scaled up graphically/modes now.

It was still good, it was just really fragmented back then.
