Next Mass Effect teased again in new artwork

BioWare's next Mass Effect project has been glimpsed again in three new pieces of artwork which have been posted online.

The images come from the newly-released BioWare: Stories and Secrets from 25 Years of Game Development coffee table book, which were then posted to Tumblr.
85

Silhouettes in that picture - particularly its inclusion of an Andromeda-native angaran - sparked suggestion the series will continue in Andromeda (although they could also just be placeholders). Still, a return to Andromeda is something fans think these new images might suggest as well.

85

The next image shows structures strikingly similar in design to the Remnant architecture already featured in Mass Effect Andromeda. The Remnant were a mysterious, advanced civilisation that seemingly ruled Andromeda and then vanished before the events of Mass Effect Andromeda itself.

85

Finally, this image appears to show the construction of a new Mass Relay - the hairpin-like structures which whooshed the Normandy around the Milky Way back in the original trilogy. This one even labelled "MR-7", so I suppose a few of these are being made.

If I were EA I'd just hit 'reset' on the original game's core concept and tell a new story with Shepard and the crew of the Normandy ignoring what happened in the third game.

If EA ever get interest from someone to make a Mass Effect film or TV (do Legendary still have the rights?) show I dare say the producers would say the same thing.

But that's just me.

I don't think Andromeda (the setting) was the issue, and the plotpoints were interesting. Hopefully folks can approach with a fresh take on it.

Interesting. My head's swimming with ideas on how the team can get away with tackling more Andromeda lore despite that game's generally tepid reception. Currently, I'm thinking we're several generations forward in the timeline here and the new game covers events in both the Milky Way and Andromeda galaxies, giving trilogy diehards a look at post-ME3 settings whilst dancing narratively into answering Andromeda-related mysteries that were intended to be showcased in more direct sequel material.

If that's the case, this is a fine line, tightrope sort of play.

It's also possible I'm completely off-base, or what we're seeing here won't even prove to be suitably accurate in the final telling. Who knows.

Lots of speculation for...

I should go.

If it's a sequel to Andromeda I'm just going to write off the Mass Effect franchise for the rest of time. Zero interest in returning to that setting or those losers.

I'll add this to my personal mega-hype list along with Elden Ring, Perfect Dark, Fable and Silent Hill.

Zero interest in Andromeda unless these mass relays being constructed are super mass relays that connect to the Milky Way.

I say this in every Mass Effect thread but I'll say it again.
Give me Mass Effect 4, direct sequel to 3.
Place the sequel thousands of years into the future so you don't have to choose a canonical ending to three or just choose one!
I want to see Tuchanka breathing and in it's full glory like it's teased in 3, I want to see the quarians and geths cooperating and living in peace, I want to see the Quarians living without the suit!
I want Bioware to stop listening to the toxic community and stop being so affraid of the ending of 3! Stand by your choice! So what if not everybody like it? Just stick with it. Distancing it self from the ending got us Mass Effect: Andromeda, and it will continue to be subpar sequels unless it's a direct continuation. There's so much you can tell in that established universe, it's a shame they're trying to get away from it.

Alright, same concept as ME1 but different 'faces'. The idea of Mass Effect with no relays just isn't that interesting IMHO. Yes, Andromeda has/had terrible execution but it was also a concept that left people cold.

There sure a lot of definitive statements in this speculation article that was practically done on era first.

Like, there's no way anyone can tell what those silhouettes are.

I don't.. really see how these people saw an Angaran in these picture ? It's very very tiny.

The mass relay one gives me hope that they'll continue in the Milky Way after the Destroy Ending.

This sounds like the best approach, or at least the approach that would be most likely to produce a good result. Same galaxy, most of the same species but lots of room for development, far enough away in terms of story and timeline that they wouldn't have to worry about stepping on the original trilogy.

The idea of Mass Effect with no relays just isn't that interesting IMHO.
I'm not sure what it is about the relays that would specifically be worth keeping above other elements, to be honest. They're there as a mystery element in the first game, but once that mystery is thoroughly solved they're just a plot convenience from that point onwards.

If it is set in Andromeda I hope they add more new races. In ME:A it felt too much like the milky way with only one new race you could really interact with and a new enemy race.

Andromeda had a pretty lukewarm plot, but I not opposed to the setting if they can create a good story. A good narrative and fun gunplay is what I want most.

I really doubt that Bioware will make a sequel to Andromeda

I think it will either be ME 4 or a reboot

Concept art can be misleading

they won't stay on Andromeda neither use Andromeda on the name.
come on people, they aren't that naive.

this is what i agree on right now. make a bulging, rich and prosperous Milky Way centuries after ME3 with a heavy focus on characters and not save the world odds, just your run of the mill protag trying to get on with life and troubles. focus on meaningful exploration of these worlds we know and love from the trilogy.

Bioware announcing a new title in Andromeda is one way to ensure you really temper any hype for a new title.

This is not an exaggeration. I feel the same way.

The lore and "world-building" of Andromeda was that bad.

I have a feeling Bioware is gonna pull some dumb shit like combining the two settings to appease everybody... somehow. And that's just ugh.

I also feel like I disagree with what it seems Bioware deems to be one of the core attributes of the franchise: Exploration.*

While it was no doubt a main feature in the first Mass Effect, with uncharted worlds to explore, the reception to the empty planets and mako-based exploration was lukewarm at best. In fact, Bioware essentially removed open exploration from both Mass Effect 2 and 3. I am not quite sure why they continue to harp on it as a essential piece of gameplay design for new Mass Effect titles when the most well received pieces of the original trilogy were the characters, the story, and choice+consequence. Often times a focus on exploration can negatively harm the former elements by padding out the game and slowing down the pace of the narrative IMO.

*Obviously, they have the sole right to determine the future and focus of the franchise - I just find it fascinating that exploration has become the core attribute of the series, when it was really nothing more than a side feature in the original trilogy. The obsession with creating a large explorable galaxy is also heavily to blame for the development woes of Andromeda. So I need to be shown that they have a clear and attainable plan to make exploration fun in the next game.

Interesting. My head's swimming with ideas on how the team can get away with tackling more Andromeda lore despite that game's generally tepid reception.
Here's how:
-call the game "Mass Effect 4";
-stars Shepard and a handful of fan-favorite characters from the original trilogy;
-Andromeda is now marketed as the prologue to the new trilogy that starts with ME4.

This is how you go back to Andromeda, its world and its characters. The game is still a continuation of the story set up in Andromeda, and the characters from that game are still in 4. But you now center the game around Shepard being the PoV.

Instant hype.

If it does turn out to pick up from Andromeda or is a soft reboot, I'll be happy. The story started to get interesting as it got to the end, they can definitely build upon it. They really need to fix the alien races and the worlds though, those were just bad all around.

If it's focused on Andromeda again then you can count me out.

Also, for the love of god, let the F/F LIs be NORMAL. So tired of being stuck with the crazies and "quirky" characters. Give me someone like Cassandra or Cora, someone who's grounded and not someone acting goofy all the time because the writers thought it would be "funny" if they were. Trust me, it's not. No more PeeBees, no more Red Jennys (Sara I think her name was), thank you.

Liara and Josephine I love you!

Hate to say it, but I don't trust modern Bioware. Maybe the new gen can be the redemption arc, last gen was the heel turn.

If it's set in Andromeda universe I hope they act like Andromeda was never made. Yes this makes sense to me.

Nothing Bioware has put out since ME2 has captured me, in fact every release has pushed me away more.

It feels strange seeing new information from a developer i used to adore and just feeling nothing.

Andromeda as a setting is just not great or that interesting to explore further to me, and Andromeda as a jumping off point is equally shitty because it's so far removed from ME3. It's a 700+ year gap.

That large a time span basically removes anything worth touching upon from the events of ME1-3 and that fallout and it's such a huge amount of time that it's kind of ridiculous to imagine we'd be returning to anything remotely resembling the ME setting we know. The realistic advancement of tech, not to mention societal advancement would be massive.

Something like 50-100 years after ME3 could work well, especially given how devastating the Reaper War was and time it would take to rebuild and recover back to a Pre-War state, but beyond that is just a pretty massive time gap. Part of MEs initial charm was this idea of Humanity rapidly being introduced into this galactic community barely a few generations after achieving space flight. You jump ahead 700+ years and Humanity is well seasoned, established and likely dominant. They're no longer some fledgling junior species trying to figure out and find their place in the galactic mix.

I'm not opposed to an Andromeda sequel, but I know most people don't want it.

The problem is that, unless EA steps in and smacks Casey Hudson over the head, we're going to get more of the same "artistic integrity" BS that they used to justify not changing the ME3 endings to avoid setting a canon to start a new Milky Way game with. So that leaves us with an Andromeda game, which people might hate just based on its setting and/or name.

Yeah I'm not doing this teasing nonsense again. Just show the game -- and not a CGI trailer, or "behind the scenes" videos... I want to see actual gameplay. Anything else I'm not bothering with after Andromeda.
This, so fucking much. Do like Firaxis does and not say shit until the game is ready to be shown off in-depth.

I agree. It's time to stop running from Mass Effect 3.

Even doing thousands of years in the future is a cop out to me.

After Amdromeda and Biowares recent track record, I won't be getting this until after release and it's properly vetted for quality.
I'll then pick it up for $10 a month later.
