Brian De Palma's filmography, a few lackluster flicks in there for sure(Wise Guys, Scarface, The Bonfire of the Vanities, Mission to Mars), but he is a brilliant director with a half dozen true blue masterpieces to his name and a half dozen more that almost make the cut.

The fact that something like Raising Cain is just a blip on his filmography is astounding, most other directors couldn't create a Raising Cain if the stars aligned in their favor and everything went perfectly.

My current favourites in Letterboxd (I would add images or links to videos if I could)

1:Heimat - Edgar Reitz -The best tv series ever. Or rather, the best series of films I've ever seen. What an ending. Spent most of it crying. The entire Heimat project (3 series of films and an independent theatrical spin-off film) are worth watching. The chronicle of a German family from the end of WWI until the year 2000 (With a XIXth century detour). I can't stop recommending it, and I'm not even German.

2:After Life - Kore Eda Hirokazu - Incredibly emotional, and original, worthy of not having it spoiled. A single shot made me cry. A lot.

3:The Young Girls of Rochefort - Jaques Demy (or any of his musicals) - Pure Joy. Cheesy in the best sense. What I watch when I have an awful day.

4:The Belly of an Architect - Peter greenaway - Peter Greenaway, symmetry and classical architecture, what's not to love.

(Bonus track) 5:El Sur - Víctor Érice - My favourite Spanish film. A great film about children. A young girl in Spain who loves her father, growing up and grasping there's something painful hidden in his past, before the civil war. Mysterious, evocative, sad. (Even sadder when it's a film with no ending. It's production was cut short, and it has no definitive ending, which leaves it really open ended).

Other Films I love, in no particular order: Dersu Uzala, The Saddest Music in the World, Good Bye Lenin, Chungking Express, L'Orphèe, Les Enfants du Paradis, The Handmaiden, Calle Mayor, El Jardín de Las Delicias, Mi Querida Señorita.

Straight up one of the gods of cinema. De Palma's run through the '70s, '80s and '90s is just unbelievable. I still need to catch up on some of his earlier and later stuff; I know it's not as highly regarded but if he made it I wanna see it.

My five favorite movies, not in order or anything:

Castaway on the Moon
Your Name
Avengers: Endgame
About Time
Before Sunset

I'm guessing a few of those might not exactly fit your definition of 'good movie', and others you've probably already seen. But if you haven't seen Castaway on the Moon, definitely check that out. From my list, it's the only movie I'd consider to be actually perfect, together with Before Sunset.

The first thing that came to my mind is Perfect Blue which is a classic masterpiece, but it's not a movie I'd ever like to watch again

La Haine
Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters
Beau Travail

Mishima is so good! There was a 4K remastered screening in Edinburgh planned for last april that I was so excited to see!. Got canned because of covid, of course. It made me so sad...
I still hope I'll be able to see on a cinema some day, if any remain after this...

I consider almost all of Edgar Wright's films to be basically perfect. Baby Driver doesn't quite make that tier, but I still love the movie.

Lol I think Era is the one that needs to broaden its horizons to see more of your list!

I still need to see Andrei Rublev. I saw Ivan's Childhood recently and was gobsmacked by how established Tarkovsky's groundbreaking style was for his directorial debut.

Yeah Edgar Wright is pretty amazing, Spaced is even one of my favorite TV series, but man Baby Driver was pretty disappointing. Its like Tarantino-lite.

Hrm... in no particular order:
Deep Rising, Freaked, Summer Wars, My Dinner with Andre, The Masque of the Red Death, San Andreas, Pontypool, and the adaptation of The Count of Monte Cristo where Donald Pleasance played Baron Danglar.

Edit: And BIG YES to Castaway on the Moon as well! I'll also throw Zebraman into my list too.
