I'm on my 7th Elite Series 2. The first one was the best. The second was second best. Then it got worse. The last five all had defective bumpers within 4 weeks of using. Terrible productions quality unfortunately.

Got my GF an elite series controller for one of her bdays. I think we both mildly regret it to a certain degree. We've went through like 4 controllers due to a variety of random issues.

Besides the shoddy luck/build quality though, the controller is amazing and she doesn't want to use any other controller, so we're kind of stuck lol .

Seems like every controller is garbage these days. The new Steam Decks are no exception either, with sticking buttons and drifting sticks fairly common given how few of these have actually shipped. The right stick on my Steam Deck drifts a bit, but it's only noticeable on the calibration screen where it doesn't re-center perfectly from a down position resulting in drift after having moved the stick down. The amount of drift is roughly half the units of the default dead zone. I'm choosing to just keep it, because it works and a replacement could have any number of other issues floating around. Doesn't feel great to know the defect is there, but the dead zone keeps it under control.

My Steam Deck actually had massive drift out of the box, because they shipped them with zero dead zone on the sticks. The first firmware update fixed that.

You'd think that with the price they're charging these things would be built like tanks.

Four decades of gaming and I could count the number of defective controllers I've had on one hand, and still have extra fingers.

Yeah, the build quality on the Elites is garbage, especially for the price. I still use my V1, but I had to replace the bumpers as the plastic broke, had to buy some knock off analog sticks (the top part that magnets on to the post) as the rubber peeled off, and then got drift and had to have a buddy solder in some new sticks. I love having the paddles, but wish they'd get the build quality better or just make attachments like the PS4 one to add them on to the cheaper, base controllers.

The quality of controllers in general suck these days, especially compared to the high price tags even on basic models. The only reason my OG Switch joycons hasn't died on me is because I store them in a drawer without using them.

I always read about elite controllers having terrible build quality. Are they that much worse than regular controllers? I'm glad I never bought one.
probably not much worse than regular, but regular are not great to start with
and i can imagine these sting quite worse considering they are called and priced "elite"
so you hear more about the failures.

This is why. That little arm connecting the two is a rather flimsy arm that inevitably gives way to wear and tear. As the buttons are a single unit they're actually pressed inwards and puts a lot of strain on the arm over time. In the various times I'd replaced the arm there was a whitened strip on the still functional side where it was also on its way to giving out.

Considering the cost of the controller and how little additional cost it would have been to make the buttons independent I can't really come to any other conclusion than these are one massive scam.

That's gen 1 . Newer gen 2 are different.

Fair enough. Hopefully they're more durable then but I've personally checked out on them. I spent too much money on it to have as many problems with it as I did. For gen 1 at least, it was a far worse design than the base controller so I've gone back to them

Gen 1 was bad that middle part could snap if pressing too hard on both bumpers. The new one I think it's more the contact to the board switch that messes up and also the bumper can pop out if presses are a certain way. The newer bumpers are designed to be pressed more at the outer edge less toward the center and on those gen 1 bumpers pressing more toward the center cause that middle to snap.

Elite series 2 uses a design more similar to the launch Xbox One bumpers but with better edge bumper detection.

They are still cheap Sony does those better with their button but Sonys triggers are weak like Xbox bumpers and both have same stick issues.

Don't know how Elite's continue to be the best selling accessory month in and month out. I have no interest in getting another one because my gen 1 pealed and had problems.

Sigh.

First two Elite's had stick drift (Replaced with Best Buy's warranty). Now this one has a RB that barely functions. God the build quality is so awful on all these controllers now (Not just Xbox). My co-worker is on his 4th or 5th Dual sense.

Currently using my Halo Infinite Elite but I don't want to put wear on that. Going to swap out my dead Gaming PC's Elite 2 and swap this one closer to the end of my replacement plan.

I replaced a dualsense with right stick drift earlier this year with a new one from gamestop.
Two months of elden ring later and the RB button clicks noticeably louder than when it was brand new lol.
Granted, it still works perfectly normally, it just clicks slightly louder now. No real problens after about two months with it and about 100 hours of elden ring.

I now have to press super hard to jump

I would never buy a series 2 controller until Microsoft apply gyro etc to them till then the 25th anniversary controller will do me fine and the build quality is excellent so far

Yeah its unfortunate that both platform holders seems to have a weak spot in their design. Good they've improved it just a pity its still prone to issues. Tbh the main reason I went back to base models was the rubberized grip falling apart. There's basically no way to correct it because it warped

Yep, I've been tempted to get one but I just can't with all these issues. I hope they finally get it right with the Elite 3 one day.
One of my dualsense controllers is not in the best condition and I'd say it's right on the verge of having a serious issue. I'm holding out on replacing it until I know the newer revisions stay in better shape for a longer period of time.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Stick Drift a problem because a single manufacturer holds a monopoly (and the patent) for clickable analog sticks, and has completely stopped giving a shit about QC the past few years because "Who else can they go to for this? We're the only game in town."

Basically the only way things are improving is if Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft all band together to demand better from them. Or if stick clicking becomes a "last gen feature" like Vibration was with the PS3.

Wouldn't even be the first time a standard controller feature got killed. Remember analog buttons on the PS2 and Xbox?

Same here but my elite was from whenever the v2 launched. I played about 10 hours before realizing that it was the button not working and not some unknown system that was limiting my attacks. The couple hours after I switched it out was amazing that I could attack way more often than I had before.

I tried some home repairs but just gave in and bought a new one. I haven't played with anything else that feels as good as the elite v2 so I'll keep buying them. Hoping that a v3 has some real improvements.

People always ask me why I have to many regular Xbox controllers this is why I buy them when they are on the cheap $35-$45 and especially when Target has then cheap redcard plus my daughters discount as cheap as $30 each it doesn't feel as bad. But funny thing is I haven't had a single regular Series controller fail.

I'm also super picky about washing hands and keeping controllers clean. I think some people don't realize just how nasty unwashed hands can be on controllers.

I'm on my second, and final Elite 2. First one lasted maybe six months, got sent back and replaced, and now 3 months later this one is dropping A inputs constantly, I'm fucking over it.

So disappointing as I was excited to have this much customization with my PC controller, but I'm not going through another round of support to get something that will probably need fixing in a few months.

Bought a DualSense and a paddle kit like I have for my main PS5 controller and not looking back, maybe I'll give an Elite 3 a chance a year or so after it comes out as long as they don't have the same problems, such an unacceptable bummer from Microsoft to put out such a premium shit product, but this is also the same company who brought us the RROD.

Add me to the list of people whose Elite 2 has developed bumper issues. The left bumper is pretty unresponsive, it registers maybe one time in three or when I press it really hard. Pretty sure it was a few hundred hours of Hitman that killed it as you need to hold down LB to run in that game.

The controller is out of warranty and they want £85 to fix it which is substantially more than the cost of a new Series controller.

I still really like the feel of the Elite 2 and I'm compensating somewhat by using the paddles as replacements for the bumpers but I'm pretty unhappy. Build quality on these things seems very poor and so many people have had problems with them, I wish they would consider extending the warranty period as recognition of the fact that these have design flaws.

I've had the same Elite Series 2 since it launched, and it has been perfect for me. I even purchased the MS $20 warranty for it, but haven't had to use it at all.

I've had dozens of controllers over the years and it is the only one that literally fell apart. The rubber handgrips came off and the right bumper just fell off one day.

That was my experience exactly.

It's a shame because whilst they're working, they're the best controller I've ever held.

I'd even forgive the build quality if Microsoft's warranty extended to, I dunno, what's fair for such an expensive item? 5 years? But when I contacted them they said I think it was like a year or two and I was well outside of it.

Won't be buying another anytime soon.

A part of me is happy when I hear horror stories about the Elite controllers.

How come?

Elite v2s are very low quality. What you can do is open it up and remove the whiteish bits that the shoulder bumpers hit that worked for me.

Also, I try not to use it for soulslike games that have RB as attack.

I rma'd my one 3 times over the course of the longer 2 year warrenty they were giving in europe.
The centering spring tension on the left stick was too loose and it would always flop just up and to the right when centred. The a button would stop registering inputs and finally the right bumper started phantom clicking. Every rma was a new unit so the problems happened over 3 different devices.

The extended warrenty made it somewhat bearable but for the insane price the build quality is total garbage and i couldnt recommend one to anyone at all.

Edit: Forgot that one of the rear paddle buttons didnt have a tactile click. That was on the first unit out of the box. So 4 different issues on 3 devices.

My PowerA controller feels like ass but at least the buttons work when I press them. I don't understand how the Elite V2 didn't have a massive recall. Shit just straight up doesn't work right out of the box. No matter how many you exchange.
I usually pick up the PowerA controllers as well, they are cheap and have 2 buttons on the back that I love using but they don't last long but you do get a years guarantee in the UK. Recently when playing Elden Ring I noticed there is a jitter in movement on all the left analogue sticks as well that sort of drives me nuts.

Elden Ring was how I noticed my LB on my Series 2 Elite had issues as well. Margit was a nightmare because my block would just intermittently not work, at first I thought I was pressing it late or something else but then I realised it was just not always activating. It was a 50/50 chance of whether my char would block if I pressed LB. I ended up swapping controller to play the rest of the game.

I think I have managed to fix it again. Spraying in a lot of electrical contact cleaner into it and leaving it for a bit seemed to settle it again. Will see if it comes back in time I guess! Sadly my warranty has expired so that isn't an option, think the UK only got 1 year.

Elden Ring is the only game I've played on my fresh Xbox Series X, and after about 100 hours while I was playing I suddenly felt the RB give more. This isn't an Elite but the regular controller. RB still works, but it is much easier to press in now.

I'm a sucker for controllers and waited si long for Elite 2. Luckily I followed reddits about since the day it launched and never dared to get one because of how incredibly faulty and unreliable it seems to be.

Halo Infinite killed the RB on my one, didn't expect to have to get a replacement in three months and I was nervous enough sending it back as it was the limited edition Halo Infinite controller too

What's the best third party controller with similar Elite series functionality?

PS4 Controllers with the official wireless adapter has been my default PC controller for awhile.

Open it. My LB was the one that apparently died because of ER, but i managed to fix it. Easy fix too. There's many videos on how to do it. I say gove it a try.

Mine survived thankfully. Nioh 2 killed the RB on my first S2. If they do an S3 I hope it has better build/QA quality.

I also just got my 4th elite series 2. First one the rubber fell off the bumper on the back to set the triggers, second one i had terrible stick drift after a month and I just replaced one because the LB stopped working (to much stun grenades in warzone I guess lol). Ive had the geeksquad warranty so guess it costs me 60 bucks every time, my buddies think I'm crazy when I replace it but when it works its a slick controller. When I was waiting on this most recent replacement I was using the controller that came with the Series X and was pretty impressed with that, almost enough that I didnt even go back to the elite

If you want elite functionality back buttons etc and don't mind a cord Power A Fusion Pro 2 is $69 on sale at GameStop right now.

PS4 controller isn't immune either those triggers are the cheapest thing I've ever seen the tabs and springs on them are super tiny and break easy. Replacing them is so much fun! :sarcasm

I bought a pack of replacement LB/RB switches for this exact reason. Already replaced the RB and LB once (hot air gun plus re-solder). Meanwhile my original X1 controller never had issues.

I've been using these 2 PS4 controllers for 5 years now, easily been the most reliable controllers I've had for past 2 gens. Thankfully have not had any issues with them so far.

Seems like controller quality past 2 generations have been shit though. My Xbox One controller has a weird X button and sometimes will randomly disconnect. Switch Pro d-pad is trash and joycons drift. I guess my second best recent controller is the Wii-U Pro controller, that thing kinda rules.

I will never buy an elite controller again. I bought a Dualsense and just modded it to be like an elite controller. WAAAAY better on so many levels
