I am so glad this never happens to me for anything.

Imagine watching a great movie and then being unable to watch anything else afterwards for a while.

This isn't just an open world thing, its just ER is that good and very addicting. Non open world games I've tried getting into lately haven't held my interest beyond a few hours. I played some Evil Dead beta yesterday and had fun but kinda got tired of the loop after several rounds.

This has happened a few times for me with certain games where others just can't grab me for awhile after. TLOU2 did it to me (and the first entry), BOTW did it, the list goes on. Its usually an indie game that is the palette cleanser that brings me back.

Also, I'm not a graphics snob by any stretch, but after seeing the DF video for Arceus its hard not to be a bit disappointed in the lack of detail in the open world, so I can't blame you OP for having some serious whiplash on that front.

Pokemon Arceus positively surprised me, I really didn't expect a Pokémon game that doesn't railroad you and lets you encounter dangerous high level pokemons if you explore too far. It gave me high hopes for the next game, but then we found out that is coming out not even a year after Arceus, and now i feel like the series is going to be stuck in mediocrity forever because of the imposed release schedule, and it's never gonna change because it will always sell to kids/nostalgia(by which I'm affected too). I did forget about Arceus as Elden ring came out, but more because of the fact that I looked at the game as a prototype than everything else.

Funny thing is, what ER is mostly doing with its open world is not new. The sense of freedom, discovery and challenge was every bit as strong in something like Ultima back in the day. What is different relative to those games is the QoL stuff, the better combat, weapon system, and the awesomeness of getting the bosses powers. The last can't be overstated, of all the cool things that ER does, that one is the most awesome. More games need to do this!!

Otherwise, I kind of started off playing Horizon FW alongside ER but decided to concentrate on ER and then go to Horizon. I like them both personally, but feel one at a time is best.

I know, it's a totally baffling way of engaging with media, and I'm always puzzled when I see it continuously crop up in gaming circles. Especially when it's two games like ER and Pokemon that offer vastly different experiences.

"Bloodborne ruined all other games for me" was a super common sentiment you saw on the old site around 2015 and history is repeating itself now with ER. But it's funny how you rarely see communities express this for other kinds of media like music or movies (thank god).

That game was ruined for me by games that came out 13 years ago.

Man biggest disappointment in the last years for me.

It's ugly of ER fans to attack other games to explain how great ER is.
You don't really need to do that to talk about your favorite game.

From Software fans have need to attack other games since Dark Souls 1, it's in their DNA.

Legends just felt like all sizzle and no steak. Too many mechanics was stripped back for me to enjoy it fully compared to previous titles. Chucking balls at Pokemon isn't enough for me.
There is so much more to it than just chucking balls at pokemon lol. All the catching mechanics from previous games are there and even more. Every pokemon can be caught by battling or by throwing, but with the higher level pokemon its much simpler to battle them. If you want to catch them with "just" throwing balls still you need to get creative with your use of all the various items which I felt was a genius move. Also the combat is the most in depth and dynamic its ever been. I wasn't sick of it after like 15 hours like every other pokemon game after gold and silver. Its the first pokemon I've actually finished the story on and I'm close enough to it that it will likely be the first one I actually complete the pokedex on too! Even my kids are enjoying it more than the other pokemon games because everything just feels better and more tactile. The one thing they struggle with is the boss battles because they are legitimately difficult action combat with pokemon battles in the middle. Some of them made me sweat as much as a Dark Souls boss lol.

If you don't like it thats fair enough, I just take umbrage with anyone calling it stripped back when to me its so much more than other pokemon games....minus the breeding, I wish that was in there, but other than that I think its great

It isnt a like to like comparison due to the hardware but playing Elden Ring alongside the ugly asf environments in Arceus really highlighted to me how bad the game looks in certain areas. It isnt even a Switch thing, as Xenoblade and other games have lovely environments. We have also been playing both ER and Arceus together and it's a hard sell for the latter tbh.

You need to take a break OP. I played Horizon FW before Elden Ring and have no desire to go back right now, I'm on an open world break after completing Elden Ring. I'm currently playing Destiny 2 and Nonary Games, I'll get back to Horizon when I'm ready to jump back into open world again.

It's better to not burn yourself out

I'm glad this practically never happens to me. I can enjoy different games for different things. I did love HZD a lot more than BotW though due to the superior gameplay and interesting story.

I can enjoy both Horizon Forbidden West and Elden Ring. Both are amazing games that play nothing like each other. It's impossible for one to ruin the other for me.

sad for you. For me, it didn't need elden ring to feel like this. It's been years that we got way better games than arceus and the pokemon ip (even it's my favorite ip ever since i was a child ) didn't save the game for me.
the game felt so much a prototype ( for me )for futur games. I hope the next one is going to be hinting mike arceus but with a story like every other pokemon mainline rpg.

I must say that I feel very sorry for the people who can't play other games because of FS. I hope one day they can recover and enjoy things again.

It's funny how each Horizon game has been overshadowed by another open world game close to it's launch. Not a knock against the quality of Horizon, but it's kinda weird that it's happened twice.

I haven't played Elden Ring so I can't say anything about it, but I do remember when GT1 came out all other racing games that were more realistic paled in comparison, regardless of how good they were.

Pokemon Arceus is just mediocre even without playing better open world games. So restrictive and the is barren outside catching Pokemons. I had trouble playing the game past 10 hours.

My god a game being open world doesn't mean that all of them try to achieve the same things. Pokemon is a collecting game first. You're telling me that you can catch the giant crow dog enemy in Elden Ring?

Meh. I stopped HZD for ER, but I'm mostly finished now. Can't wait to get back to HZD, love the World and the story. And it's way less stressful or frustrating!

I really wish I felt same way because I am many hrs into ER, levelled up and got good gear, and don't quite want to abandon the time investment, but it's been increasingly boring. Exploration is only fun if there is something to find, but so far there is nothing but things to kill there, and very few lame NPCs with like two lines of dialogue. I've no idea why I am riding around committing random acts of murder on braindead creatures that'll respawn anyway. I just ride up to them instead, grab shiny shit and ride away. Initially I was excited to see new areas, but at this point those are just same recolored rocks/swamp with same location bits. There was enough content for 30 hrs of curiosity but this thing is huge.

I would never touch a game that looks like Arceus (Elden Ring's graphics with nice reshade mode barely pass my standards), but would be actually nice to have some pokemon like mechanics there for variety's sake.

This is amazing. 10+

A serious thought: what if we spun up a specific sub-forum for certain major game releases for six months around its launch. Basically a place for people to make threads with somewhat relaxed thread making rules.

This could be helpful as people apparently feel that every thought they have about a game is too important to go inside the OT. We are currently getting up to 10 new ER/From threads a day!

I think the knowledge of Xenoblade Chronicles existing on the same platform would get that reaction. You are here for the pokemon(and maybe the trainer designs), the game being a container of said pokemon and many people can make do with whatever progress Gamefreak seems to manage with each new game.

I enjoyed Arceus, but it actually confirmed for me that I'n already over the franchise.

It's enjoyable because it's unlike any other pokemon games and I don't really care about catching pokemons. Kinda, I've enjoyed the game despite it's a pokemon game.

There are quests in Elden Ring that span the whole game. Early on you should have started a major plot quest that starts by getting a gesture and using it to signal a certain NPC to come meet you at a specific ruin.

Pokemon Arceus is a great step in the right direction for Pokemon, which is why I loved that game so much. But compared to other open world games it really is very lacking. Hopefully the new Pokemon game is gonna fix that though!

I literally thought that was what was supposed to happen except not a sub-forum just a few dedicated threads to keep one game from having dozens of unnecessary threads cluttering up the gaming side.

But does Elden Ring have Psyduck? I don't think so, smh Miyazaki couldn't even add the best Pokémon.

Psyduck has ruined the rest of gaming for me.

It has ruined pretty much every game for me except GT7 and I need some time away from it to go back to whatever I started beforehand (Forbidden West, Tiny Tina etc.).

this seems weird since those two games couldn't be more unlike each other.

Gen 9 likely started its development after Sword & Shield came out. I'm cautious too, but they didn't literally give themselves a just a year to make Scar/Violet

Never been any actual rule like that that I'm aware of.
Usually whenever a new game comes out , its common for threads to be locked and Mods go "this can be discussed in the OT". Often for impressions threads. Thats what ive observed at least

You're not wrong, but I was just pointing out it's not something that's laid out in the rules of the site or anything. It's just something mods do on their own, at least as far as I know.

Yeah, that sucks. Dark Souls did exactly the same to me. Could not get into any other single player game for a while (year or two).
