Edge hasn't given a 10 out this year right? Which games released this year did they give 9's to?
Zelda BOTW got a 10 and it had less than 20 cutscenes
no 10s this year. these games got 9s:
eliza, astral chain, telling lies, fire emblem three houses, outer wilds, steamworld quest, baba is you, sekiro, devotion, dmc 5, apex legends, sunless skies
edit: and of course, sayonara wild hearts and grindstone from this issue.

Gears 5 score is absolutely right
3 boss fights in the game, 2 of them are the same in different settings and their mechanics are just not enough. Its old design. Bad design.
Writing was bad, characters were bad, zero element of surprise and the only element of exposition in the whole game was to go through dark tunnels or something like that / send jack in ventilation corridors - ask it to hack a terminal, over and over and over
The constant chit chat for absolutely nothing in the open world also felt like an element to check on a dev list rather than a meaningful element in the game. Its still a competent shooter with very solid presentation but nothing about it is remarkable. Outside of that the mp is a mess ! had much more fun playing Remnant for 60 hours than this for 6 (thank you gamepass tho, was a 2€ only ride)
Now thanks to this thread I impulsively bought Sayonara Wild Hearts and yeah, its really that good

To be honest I got to the second open world part. My skiv glitched into the sand and I couldn't get back on it. Had to restart the chapter and I've dropped the game since.

It's like it's a master of none. Character movement isn't the greatest, aiming and overall gunplay is okay, (kind of underwhelming on a controller to be honest, maybe I should adjust the acceleration parameters?), getting into and out of cover seems clunky. Even switching to something like your grenades has a lot of downtime and just feels clunky.
Enemy design ranges from typical to annoying. Bosses are unremarkable.

Yikes, 5/10??? I saw MK11 got 5/10 as well. Someone there is getting old and grumpy...
Which is a weird take, imo. I played it nearly maxed out on PC and personally I think Gears 5 is nowhere near the top 5 of best looking games this generation - and I'm not talking subjective art/design. I'm talking raw technical graphics. There's certainly stand out areas in the game and the rocket hangar is one of the best looking interiors I can think of. It's just that outdoors areas/characters are fairly lo-fi compared to games like Spider-Man, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Red Dead Redemption 2, Days Gone, God of War, Detroit: Become Human, Uncharted 4/The Lost Legacy, The Order 1886 and Shadow of the Tomb Raider - all of which I think are technically more impressive and overall better looking games.

I'm having serious Fear of Missing Out Syndrome this year. Guess Sayonara Wild Hearts is one more game to add to that list.
Honestly the top 5 would be Spider Man, BF V with rtx, Control with RTX, Metro Exodus with RTX, RDR 2 no doubt
Usually I'm on same page with EDGE scores but Gears 5 score is not very well argumented.
If you are giving a 6 to something it means that it is a good game but with flawed execution on at least 2-3 levels.
Innovation, Gameplay, Story, Multiplayer and Production in Gears 5 are way above 6 level.

it's very short, you can beat it in 1 or 2 hours max. so if you don't have time for many games, this one won't take too much of your time.
won't come to android as it's an apple arcade game, but console/pc ports will most likely come after a few months.

If only Edge reviews for games were all scored on the same merit, then Uncharted 4 might have got the same score . Still this is the same EDGE that marked down VF4 Evo for being more of the same while scoring each Pro Evo 9 out of 10
I think it's time for TC for work on a new IP - something that has the potential to pull in a much greater number of players, revenue, and mindshare for the Xbox brand. And something that gives TC an opportunity to get away from the tropes and expectations of the Gears franchise that, while satisfying its core fanbase, are putting off a lot of others.
Gears 6 can wait.
Gears 5 has open world fetch quests too.
It's an okay game, 6 or 7/10 seems like a good score for it. Gears 5 seriously need a reinvention, a reboot and probably a better studios behind the development, that is all. Or just remove the SP portion of the games and make it a f2p MP only game.
Mario Kart and Smash don't really have peers by which to draw points of comparisons or use to measure against any growth in their respective sub-genres. Zelda, on the other hand, does and prior to BotW it was chastised by some for being formulaic.

Gatekeeping? Really? It's often a matter of a series feeling stale and stagnant. I would have said the same thing about God of War Ascension.
Such a criticism isn't saying that "gameplay is weak simply because it's old", the implication is that the gameplay has stagnant since a previous generation's inception, what was once fresh feels formulaic. No different than a movie feeling like a 90s pastiche.
9 for Sayonara Wild Hearts is cool. Great game. But a 6 for Gears 5 when Gears of War 4 got a 7 is kinda wtf.
Yea the bugs really have ruined the game for a lot of people, and the huge drop off in players online is crazy.
Nah nothing has changed about reviews at all, people take them as seriously as they ever have been. Thats why review threads are a thing. I just think that when people fav game doesn't get the score they want they try to deflect the bad score. I know I would do it if games like Uncharted 4, God Of War, Forza got scores I didnt like. But nah, no one has stopped taking reviews seriously at all. Their probably more relevant now than they were in the passed.

Almost as if scores depend on the person, the game, the genre, and trying to compare a cinematic third person shooter to a mobile battle lite doesn't make much sense
A 6 for one game doesn't mean the same thing as a 6 for another game, especially when they're in completely different genres and doing very different things
I'd rate Avengers Endgame, Midsommar, One Cut of the Dead, Enter The Dragon, and Blood & Black Lace all 8/10s. You think that that score means the same thing for all those movies, that the same strengths and flaws that made one a 8/10 are the same reasons I'd rate another movie the same score?
