At least Konami had the decency to formally enter the gambling market.

'Surprise mechanics', as if not getting the items they want is part of the experience a player would value.

Wow this looks like satire. Everyone likes a good surprise, amirite?

But what are they going to do? Of course they will defend themselves as much as possible because their whole business model is based on this shit. If they come out, admit that it's wrong and want to remove it from their games.... A lot of people would lose their jobs and the company would be in huge trouble. The stock market alone would crush them if they show a bit of weakness.

Fun fact: Konami's does "surprise mechanics" for their pachinko machines far more ethically than EA cause... they are regulated. Imagine that. Konami is more ethical.

Imagine corporations using this kind of bullshit argument for other things.
"We're not dumping toxins into the ocean, we're enriching the water with minerals."
"We're not giving our employees below minimum wage, we're helping them understand the value of currency."
"We're not using child labour, we're giving kids the opportunity to gain experience in the job market."

Why would you use products targeted at children in a defence against the suggestion that lootboxes encourage children to gamble? I wouldn't think they would want to reinforce the idea that lootboxes appeal to children.

Fuck off with this shit EA. Such a scummy company. "Surprise mechanics" ... yuk, where do they find scum to dream up and regurgitate such shitty messaging?

Just how much is EA reliant on loot boxes. Makes me think they would burn fast if gambling mechanics were made illegal.....

The funny thing about lootboxes is that the lower-tier items (e.g. a 3* draw in a 5* gacha game) is often completely useless by design, often even being worse than nothing since it takes up inventory space which you then have to manage.

This applies to FIFA as well. You get a 79 rated card in a pack now, it exists to be grinded into another pack. There is no reason for anyone to use that card in their squad in June.

Pitiful.

I really hope lootboxes will get banned. Now, I am no illusions: they (not EA specifically) will find something else that will be lawful yet still predatory. Don't underestimate them: it's all about the money (consumers, be they kids or adults, be damned).

Yeah you but can look back fondly on the surprise you received when the box was opened as you manage your inventory

that spin lol. EA really doesn't want to give up lootboxes it seems. EA really after that money.

A mechanic where you get a surprise of a random number of things is still a lootbox in the gaming world.
And is about as ethical as the lootbox is.

They're not wrong. Americans might not really grasp what a Kinder Surprise chocolate is, but lootboxes are no different than LOL dolls, trading cards or whatever other randomly distributed thing exists.

After Battlefront 2, Mass Effect and Anthem, I wouldn't buy a game from EA if it came with a blowjob from a supermodel. There seems to be nothing that they do in good faith. This is just further evidence.

Everyone loves extra RNG as a core design mechanic! Just ask Hearthstone players.

I love those RNG mechanics when it rolls in my favor (getting that one extra ping on a minion/hero to finish it) or when drawing a lackey into a spell into a board clear...but when it doesn't though...yeah...

EA must have the lowest opinion about their audience, to think an argument like that would work. They must truly believe people are complete idiots.
