Dutch mink farms have begun a government-ordered cull over concern that animals infected with coronavirus could transmit it to humans.

The government ordered the cull of 10,000 mink on Wednesday after determining that affected farms could act as long-term reservoirs of the disease.

Dutch mink were first infected with coronavirus by their handlers in April. The government identified two cases in which humans had been infected by sick animals in May, the only animal-to-human transmissions known since the global outbreak began in China.

Since these minks are bred for fur, does this mean the fur can still be harvested from them even if they are killed early?

Everytime I hear about mink farms in the Netherlands I am shocked that they still exist.
I am originally dutch, and this is so low on the radar over there.

Dutch law will ban mink farming by 2024

While the Dutch outlawed the breeding of foxes and chinchillas for their fur in 2008, the mink ban was brought into effect by the lower house of parliament earlier this year.

The Dutch senate on Tuesday passed a ban on mink farming in the Netherlands, the world's third-largest producer of the animal fur, in a ruling that will phase out the industry by 2024. The bill, tabled by both the Labour Party and the Socialist Party, was passed by a majority of lawmakers in a vote of 46 to 29, according to a statement on the senate website.

The Dutch outlawed the breeding of foxes and chinchillas for their fur in 2008. The mink ban was passed by the lower house of parliament earlier this year. "This significant decision will prevent the suffering of millions of fur-bearing animals in the future," Joanna Swabe, Humane Society International's EU director, said in a statement.

Like what, you set up a law that goes into effect in 2012 that bans the practice but let it fizzle out over 12 years and still have the gall to say:
"This significant decision will prevent the suffering of millions of fur-bearing animals in the future," It should have been stopped right then and there

All mink farms are to be closed by 2024 and the government is actively working with the farms to close earlier.

I read the title as 10,000 milk and was confused lol.....

So they are isolating them from the farms temporarily until the virus strain goes away or something....or are they killing them?

culling means reduction of a wild animal population by selective slaughter.

Considering animal to human transmission is possible with minks and corona, this is the best solution.

If this barbaric trade can be shut down sooner, so much the better.
I think you severely underestimate how big the industry is. Almost every single big name designer is using fur now. The taboo is almost gone and the people I see wearing fur are younger and younger. It has become a multi-billion dollar industry, it ain't falling that easy.

Okay. I hope the industry tanks and your dad loses his job or business.

My grandma's brother was a mink breeder for fur. I'm still for this industry getting shut down, and that family business died with him. Screw that industry.

In that case I apologise for my abrasiveness: I thought you were gloating, but I misinterpreted your intentions with that post.
I wasn't, I was just stating facts as to why it will not be an easy industry to shut down. It's like trying to get big tobacco to shut down.

Apology accepted, maybe I didn't word things correctly on my end either.
