OEGSTGEEST, Netherlands (Reuters) - Indy Mellink, a Dutch card fan, was explaining a game to her cousins last summer when she asked herself: why should a king be worth more than a queen?

The 23-year-old forensic psychology graduate, encouraged by her father, decided it was time to break with the centuries-old tradition of sexual inequality in playing card decks that rank men above women.

"If we have this hierarchy that the king is worth more than the queen then this subtle inequality influences people in their daily life because it's just another way of saying 'hey, you're less important," she said in an interview. "Even subtle inequalities like this do play a big role."

After a lot of trial and error, she designed a genderless deck in which the images of a king, queen and jack were replaced with gold, silver and bronze.

Friends and family snapped up the first 50 decks of GSB (Gold, Silver, Bronze) cards, which have images of gold bars, silver coins and a bronze shield. Mellink had more made and began selling them online.

Within a few months, she had sent out around 1,500 packs, including to Belgium, Germany, France and the United States. Game shops have also shown interest, she said.

I respect the effort and where she's coming from but this will literally never ever catch on anywhere ever. Looks like an Old-Maid deck.

^^^Those designs are ugly AF too.

I would have gone with Emperor/Empress, King/Queen, Jack/Jane

EDIT: Maybe Baron/Baroness if you need to keep the same letter

Those designs aren't great, but honestly I don't mind GSB being a replacement for KQJ. I think it maintains the same thematic hierarchy.

Things like these are always the sorta thing you look back on in hindsight and go, "Wait... that's kind of messed up, right?" I grew up with lots of card games and board games and I remember little me straight-up thinking real kings were a step above queens and not equivalent because my first real impression of them was through card games and chess where the king is the most important. Even when I started learning otherwise, about queens of old nations, I wondered who the kings of the time were and why I was hearing so much about their queens

I appreciate little gestures like this of dismantling old school patriarchic concepts

Absolute shit designs. I'll take regressive King>Queen dynamics over basically made up Gold > Silver dynamics. Go back to the drawing board.

I like it! I'm sure there's a market for it, hell there's already like a million varieties of themed cards.

I like this, and it's better than the binary reinforcing man/woman variants. It's not a big deal but it is nice to have options.

Hopefully this can get better art though.

I like the concept of removing the outdated patriarchal nature of King/Queen/Jack, but those designs look like something from a dodgy casino app.

Chess used to originally not have a Queen piece even it was something like an advisor originalt. It exists because of Queen Isabella and she's also the one who got it to be the most powerful piece.

Nice if her to try and make this work but it's not gonna catch on. It's just gonna end up being considered another themed deck. Oh and the art is bad.

I respect the idea but, like, card games are like centuries old. People are used to Jack/Queen/King/Ace/Joker. And, I believe that Jack, Queen and King are more related to position of power in politics, at the time, than the gender of the people reprensenting them...

This is not going anywhere.

Take the numbers to 13. Job done.

Pretty much the only viable option imo. You'll always find somebody that's offended otherw-------- Saying that, I can hear a superstitious person already afraid of number 13.

Really? With chess little me thought that the king was a figurehead and the queen actually got shit done while the useless ass king had to sit back and be protected lol

Surely the better option would have just been to have the numbers and suits carry on from 11-13. Basically normal cards should be Malifaux cards.

Why can't a woman be king or a man queen? Surely the answer to inclusivity is to simply make the designs androgenous? 🤔

I'd be pretty all right with returning to this concept and simply replacing the king with a general, honestly, because a military leader and a tactical adviser make a heck of a lot more sense than a king and a queen for the purposes of the game, anyway.

It's a good idea and it should be done even if not in this specific form and the art leaves something to be desired.

This just seems to be replacing one outmoded hierarchy with another.
You really don't see the difference between "men have more value than women" and "gold has more value than silver" and think that maybe, just maybe, the former might be a teeny bit more egregious?

Really?

I'm all for novelty decks but gold/silver/bronze is pretty meh, and the art itself just looks bad.

And what about the jokers?

EDIT:

It seems they stayed joker. Kinda weird when there's no more royalty motif.

Kings' heads are better in a basket than on a card anyway, as a French guy I approve.
